For the first time in history, Rockstar's infamous Grand Theft Auto series will see a dual Xbox/PlayStation release when GTA IV graces both Sony and Microsoft at once. No timed exclusives, just GTA IV for all. With one of America's biggest gaming franchises hitting both the PS3 and Xbox 360 at the same time, the question now is this -- exactly which machine will shift more copies? If Amazon's sales figures hold merit, then we may have a sneak peak at an answer and right now, it's looking like Microsoft has the edge -- albeit slightly.
Looking at Amazon's pre-order comparison, the 360 holds 59% of the sales, while the PS3 snaps at its heels with 41%. Considering the comparitive cheapness of the 360 and the promised exclusive content headed to the Microsoft camp, it's pretty good that the PS3 is keeping things close to even right now. After Sony's string of bad luck, this really can't be seen as a huge negative, despite being in second (and last) position. With a good few months before GTA IV sees the light of day and starts courting controversy around the world, there's still plenty of time for those percentages to alter dramatically. They could, however, just stay the same, which wouldn't be very interesting at all. People of Destructoid, we want YOUR wild and dangerous predictions!

I'm in the sciences. This sort of data collection would get laughed down in less than one heartbeat of a mouse.
I laugh at you sir!
Jim : Awesome picture.
and my prediction is that as long as i have a copy of the game when it is released beside a case of yuengling, i dont care.
I own all 3 consoles, in regards to GTA IV, I pondered as to which one I would go with. Normally the quality of the game runs very deep. Lag is a supreme issue when I make my purchases - such as buying The Darkness for the PS3 rather than the 360.. That slight bit of lag during action scenes drove me nuts, so I had to buy for the PS3 instead.
There are quite a number of people who will purchase for the 360 based on the Achievement system alone *A rediculous thing if you ask me - I hope the trophy system is out by the time of GTA's release so I can stop hearing of it*.
But what will drive the sales for people like me is going to most likely be the episodic content which *so far* is 360 Exclusive. I don't know if I can take purchasing the game for the PS3 and missing out on extra content like that.. Granted, the episodic content could go the way of Half-Life 2.. But until there is an announcement that the PS3 will be getting the episodic content as well, the 360 has a pretty firm seat in my pocket.
Now, if they announce that the PS3 is getting this content as well.. Say, at E3.. Then I will wait for the release and the comparison videos to arrive - and this will cause my purchase.
Nevertheless, if we're talking sales numbers. It's most definitely going to end up on the 360's favor. By how much remains to be seen in the far end *next 6 months after release*... But upon first sales - i'd say 360 by a few leaps and bounds.
And yes, I agree with Dennen... he makes much of the sence. And I don't own any of the next-gen goodness.
i'm with bhive; comparing preorder numbers in this fashion is borderline making news up. sorry, i love all you guys, but this just doesn't really do anything for me.
on a side note, if you goto amazon and look at the preorder page for the ps3 collector set, it suggests the halo 3 legendary edition for $220 dollars. kinda odd, but hey, that is them-trying-to-get-you-to-buy-more-stuff for you.
i'm getting the ps3 version and there isn't anything anyone can do about, well aside from the esrb. i'm really worried they are going to do something about it. ]:
Also Jim S.=tool.
Overall, these isolated statistics tell us...absolutely nothing!
Sorry, I couldn't resist. ;)
Gotta love that safety deposit box!
Bring on the games:)
GTAIV is more important to the 360's future than Halo, hence the episodic content and online co-op. hehe.
2007 may be the smelliest year the Playstation name has ever had.
.....my 2 cents worth.
