Pre-orders for the 360 version of GTA IV edge out the PS3 version photo

For the first time in history, Rockstar's infamous Grand Theft Auto series will see a dual Xbox/PlayStation release when GTA IV graces both Sony and Microsoft at once. No timed exclusives, just GTA IV for all. With one of America's biggest gaming franchises hitting both the PS3 and Xbox 360 at the same time, the question now is this -- exactly which machine will shift more copies? If Amazon's sales figures hold merit, then we may have a sneak peak at an answer and right now, it's looking like Microsoft has the edge -- albeit slightly.

Looking at Amazon's pre-order comparison, the 360 holds 59% of the sales, while the PS3 snaps at its heels with 41%. Considering the comparitive cheapness of the 360 and the promised exclusive content headed to the Microsoft camp, it's pretty good that the PS3 is keeping things close to even right now. After Sony's string of bad luck, this really can't be seen as a huge negative, despite being in second (and last) position. With a good few months before GTA IV sees the light of day and starts courting controversy around the world, there's still plenty of time for those percentages to alter dramatically. They could, however, just stay the same, which wouldn't be very interesting at all. People of Destructoid, we want YOUR wild and dangerous predictions!

Pre-order comparison? From one place?

I'm in the sciences. This sort of data collection would get laughed down in less than one heartbeat of a mouse.

I laugh at you sir!

Wow thats very impressive for the PS3, whough I think since there are more harcore gamers owning the PS3 (and therfore pre-ordering) the sales of the 360 version when the game comes out will be much much better than the PS3 sales.

as much as i hate the ps3, isnt it more the fact that there are more 360's out there...? wouldn't that make more people on the 360 side of the street preorder? just seems like logic.

and my prediction is that as long as i have a copy of the game when it is released beside a case of yuengling, i dont care.

I am fairly positive that the 360 will more likely come out in the end.

I own all 3 consoles, in regards to GTA IV, I pondered as to which one I would go with. Normally the quality of the game runs very deep. Lag is a supreme issue when I make my purchases - such as buying The Darkness for the PS3 rather than the 360.. That slight bit of lag during action scenes drove me nuts, so I had to buy for the PS3 instead.

There are quite a number of people who will purchase for the 360 based on the Achievement system alone *A rediculous thing if you ask me - I hope the trophy system is out by the time of GTA's release so I can stop hearing of it*.

But what will drive the sales for people like me is going to most likely be the episodic content which *so far* is 360 Exclusive. I don't know if I can take purchasing the game for the PS3 and missing out on extra content like that.. Granted, the episodic content could go the way of Half-Life 2.. But until there is an announcement that the PS3 will be getting the episodic content as well, the 360 has a pretty firm seat in my pocket.

Now, if they announce that the PS3 is getting this content as well.. Say, at E3.. Then I will wait for the release and the comparison videos to arrive - and this will cause my purchase.

Nevertheless, if we're talking sales numbers. It's most definitely going to end up on the 360's favor. By how much remains to be seen in the far end *next 6 months after release*... But upon first sales - i'd say 360 by a few leaps and bounds.

So, as a percentage, more PS3 owners are picking it up than 360 owners. Could this just be because the PS3 has few other good games so PS3 owners are just clamoring to pick up a good title?

my first instinct after reading this was to go on amazon and preorder the collector pack, but then i realized that i don't want to have to preorder it now, just to try and even out the amazon numbers.

i'm with bhive; comparing preorder numbers in this fashion is borderline making news up. sorry, i love all you guys, but this just doesn't really do anything for me.

on a side note, if you goto amazon and look at the preorder page for the ps3 collector set, it suggests the halo 3 legendary edition for $220 dollars. kinda odd, but hey, that is them-trying-to-get-you-to-buy-more-stuff for you.

i'm getting the ps3 version and there isn't anything anyone can do about, well aside from the esrb. i'm really worried they are going to do something about it. ]:

Well, since Xbox 360 holds 80% marketshare in America with regard to next gen consoles (leaving Wii out for a simpler comparison) and PS3 only holds 20%, it is actually rather impressive that the PS3 preorder percentage is this high. Then again, maybe 360 gamers just have more to choose from and those PS3 games thirst greatly for something to play.

Overall, these isolated statistics tell us...absolutely nothing!

Hasn't the 360 more than edged out the ps3 in user base with a year head start. I would hope it has more than an edge considering its userbase and dlc. Sounds like considering those facts Sony is doing great! Good job Sony and they didnt pay 50mil for it.

Where's the story? That's like saying more pairs of pants are sold in China than Japan every year... which is completely useless. As others have said.. is it really news that more people will own this for the 360? There are over 11 million 360's sold to PS3's 3.5 million.

Jim Sterling: Crowd pleasing and monocle wearing can never go hand in hand.

GTAIV is more important to the 360's future than Halo, hence the episodic content and online co-op. hehe.

I just feel like this year smells for the PS3. Do they have any A list exclusives this year at all? Little Big Planet?

2007 may be the smelliest year the Playstation name has ever had.

PS3 version will be slightly jerky, a bit "light" and have poor aliasing. The 360 version will have no ability to control the helicopters using a tilt function.
.....my 2 cents worth.

There is just too many factors to analyze this properly. The PS3 number seems impressively high to me, but maybe it's because GTA IV will be the first big name title for the system. Maybe it's because only the hardcore pre-order games. I think that it will tilt more towards the 360 once the game actually comes out.
