Pre-order now to avoid disappointment: GameStop's GTA IV promo

10:12 AM on 04.02.2008, Nick Chester 56 comments

     Rockstar

While Rockstar may be done revealing Grand Theft Auto IV footage -- having just released their fourth and final trailer -- GameStop still wants your five dollars. And what better way to make you drop to your knees and open up your wallet than a promo filled to the brim with spankin' new and hot GTA IV footage?

The trailer shows off quite a bit of Liberty City that we haven't seen already, and this is probably the most "alive" looking we've seen Rockstar's game in action. Well, I've seen it looking pretty alive -- I was at Rockstar's office yesterday going hands-on with the much anticipated title, so keep your eyes peeled for some of my fancy impressions later in the week.

So, who's already pre-ordered now? Was it to avoid disappointement? We hate being disappointed.

@ qwerty:

I played it yesterday and no, it's not really a huge laggy mess. I can't speak on how buggy it is, since I didn't play a final version of the game.

I absolutely refuse to pre-order games. There is always some super store that has a shit load of whatever game comes out. And if they don't I can wait a couple of days, it won't be the end of the world.

Yeah, as soon as I get the money up, I'll be preordering from Amazon, just for the free, useless license plate.

I'm preordering because the Gamestop is 20 minutes from my house while the Best Buy is 40 minutes.

I preordered mine a good 6+ months ago when it was supposed to be coming out in October...AND i'm taking a few days off work around 4/29 so I can do the midnight release and just chill with it. Question is, do I become the supersucker and go for the Super Ultimate Limited Shitcrazy Duffel Bah edition?

I just pre-ordered this on Sunday when I picked up RSV2 (talk about a huge buggy laggy mess!) after reading IGN's huge interview with two of the designers. It just got me so pumped I hadda pre-order.

Plus, I got a free poster and some gamer pics for a game I knew I was gonna buy anyway. Although not as cool as what Amazon offers, it's still something for free. I'm not a swag whore, so it was good enough for me.

I'm waiting till the beggining of May to Pick up my humble copy. I believe that there will be a somewhat shortage... In america.

( Who knows though? I thought the same about SSBB, never happened... )

Besides I know this sounds like blasphemy but I never really went GaGa for the GTA series. More of an addition to the game library than anything else for me; this one is.

Preordering is for suckers. Gamestop know this which is why they cultivate the hype and panic that if you don't you won't get a copy.

More sensible people buy their games elsewhere, or simply wait a few days for supply and demand to level out.

I don't pre-order many games, but I pre-ordered this. My small college town only has 4 places to buy games: Gamestop, an indie shop, Wal-Mart, and Meijer. The indie shop always sells out quick, as do both Wal-Mart and Meijer. So i pre-ordered it from Gamestop.

Can't wait. And from everything I've read/heard, the framerate/lag issues from the earlier, pre-delayed build are gone.

I seriously doubt that supply will be an issue. I don't pre-order on principle anyways.

I pre-ordered from Blockbuster Video, being that I work there and get a discount. We're supposedly giving away an 8x10 framed picture of GTA4's protagonist.

Supposedly.

I don't want a license plate or picture. MS points at least have value.

I pre-ordered the PS3 special edition at gamestop. I don't understand why people don't like pre-orders. My copy is guaranteed to be in the store the day it comes out and I don't have to rush to get it.

Is this trailer from the retail version? I hope not as there seemed to be frame rate dips every time something was happening. Hope they haven't beefed up the graphics at the cost of introducing choppy, inconsistent frame rates. : /

I'm not too big on preordering, except for Persona 3: FES, and I only preordered that because Atlus has a history of shipping small quantities.

Everything else I just pick up at Best Buy or Wally's World.

No point in pre-ordering unless there is some rare collector edition. Even then you can just wait. I didn't pre-order SSBB and was able to pick it up with no problems at a GameStop 48 hours after its release even though they said I wouldn't be able to get it potentially for weeks.

@ Cheeburga Walmart-yuck!

I'll get GTA, it is the only game my wife can tolerate, she likes the music. I don't think she is aware of the other aspects.

@ teach4good - The special one at Gamestop comes w/an art book, soundtrack CD, safebox, and a rockstar duffel bag.

And honestly, while I totally understand all the reasons why one wouldn't preorder a game, if you normally shop at a brick and mortar store that's not hard to get to, and you KNOW you're going to want to play the game the second it's released, AND since it costs no extra money, there's no logical reason not to slap down $5. No shame to say I have about 15 games preordered myself...I know for sure the GS I used to work at that I still go to is doing a midnight release for GTA4, too, so i'm looking forward to not doing crowd control (suckas)

I preordered this game last night from Gamestop.com and got overnight shipping. I've never pre-ordered a game before in 18 years of gaming, but I can't stand the horrible thought of not being able to find this game anywhere for a month once it's released, so I took the plunge.

"Since GTA will be launched on both the main consoles, the PS3 and the 360, sales are projected to be at 360 million in the first week alone." from this article.

Im pretty sure Take Two is going to produce a lot more copies that for a game this big. No need to pre-order.

The last game that I pre-ordered was Madden 08, and that was only because Best Buy was running a deal where you’d get $10 off any other game $29.99 and up if you pre-ordered Madden. Ironically, I ended up getting rid of Madden 08, and I still play Warhawk to this day.

But my point is that I haven’t had trouble finding games at Best Buy (aside from Rock Band, which had limited stock everywhere), so I’m not going to bother pre-ordering. I’m sure there’ll be plenty of copies to go around.

I like how this turned into a "pre-ordering games sucks/doesn't" thread. :D That wasn't my intention. I always found the "Pre-order now to avoid disappointment" thing that Rockstar does to be hilarious. Having dinner with some Rockstar folks last night, Ron was saying he heard that GameStop's pre-orders for GTA IV were breaking some record, and I suggested that maybe it was because people wanted to avoid disappointment. Everyone laughed. It was good times.

Really, that's the only reason I used it in my subject!
