Pre-E3 09: New Need For Speed SHIFT trailer debuts photo

I have to hand it to the Need For Speed SHIFT marketing team. All of their trailers for the game so far have been about the cars and nothing else. The only sounds you hear are the roar of the engines and the sound of metal on metal when cars collide into each other. There's no bullsh*t pop music, no weird camera angles -- these trailers are about the racing experience.

I played Need for Speed SHIFT a while back and it was a real enjoyable experience despite the fact that I don't like simulation racing games. SHIFT is designed for players that are new to that type of racing and for players that are hardcore simulation fans. It's a win-win situation for all sides.

Check out the new trailer after the break. How's it looking to you?

Burnout spoiled me I guess. That and I got really burned out (pun inteded) on the Need for Speed franchise.

Looks less cool than GRID, I smell fail. It will sell like hotcakes, though.

"SHIFT is designed for players that are new to that type of racing and for players that are hardcore simulation fans."

Really? Because Grid tried doing that and it kinda' sucked.

You're either a simulation racer or you're not. You're either a really easy game to master (Burnout), or not.

Was there anything to that trailer besides car sounds? Who could possibly get exicted over this?

It looks generic. Wasnt the whole point of NFS to race on the roads dodging inbetween traffic. If the dump that Im out.

I don't see how something can be for sim-racers and newbies at the same time... Thats actually impossible.

And for this reason alone, I think the game will fail. If you want to cater to sim-racers, then do it. But the minute you say the game is for noobs, you just lost the sim-racer playerbase.

Also, sim-racers don't like car contact. A race should not have any contact at all. But every single trailer shows people punting and wrecking on every turn...

This is just another arcade racer trying to front like its a sim. Fail.

Looks like... another racing-sim. I honestly don't see what there is seperating it from Forza 2 or anything else.

Also the cars aren't shiny enough. Grumblegrumble.

that was a stupid trailer. inevitably EA is going to screw this up somehow. I'll stick with forza and gran turismo

teh trailer looker rather promising... but it could have been a trailer for GRID as well, with just another title slapped over it...

in trailers anything looks great... I'll believe it when I play it...

Needs more speed... also, cars need damage.

I'm sure it's possible for developers to make a sim racing game that is noob friendly as well as appeal to the hardcore fans.

@Chronic Logic:

Race car racing physics are not noob friendly. If it's noob friendly, it's not realistic enough to be called a sim. If its not a sim, then its an arcade racer. Which is exactly what I said. And us sim-racers don't do arcade racing games...

I certainly didn't build a $3500 racing rig for bumper cars with motion blur and arcade physics. Neither did the other sim-racers.

@JDigital: You built a $3500 racing rig?

...Why not just push money towards car and race out on tracks that host amateur nights?

Seems slightly sad.

@vexed alex:

I have a track car also... you know it is possible to do more than one thing.
