Pre-E3 09: Aragorn's Quest confirmed, also teased photo

About a week ago we reported that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment had a new Lord of the Ring title ready to be shown at E3. Dubbed Lord of the Rings: Aragorn’s Quest, the game was described as family friendly -- designed with the kid and his guardian in mind. At the time we didn’t know what it would look like, how it would play, or even platforms. Now we do.

Above is one of the first screens of the game WBIE sent our way earlier today. As you can plainly see the devs behind the title aren’t exactly shooting for realism, which is probably a good thing considering the title is only slated for release on the Wii, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS.

Aragorn’s Quest will have players “assume the role of Aragorn” and fight through the more memorable conflicts in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. You may be rolling your eyes -- this isn’t anything EA hasn’t done before -- but there’s a subtle twist with this game. These reenacted conflicts are the result of Samwise Gamgee -- now hero and mayor of Hobbiton -- telling stories to his children. King Aragorn of Gondor is a’coming to town, and Sam wants the little ones to know who he is.

The Wii version will have waggle, the DS version will probably have plenty of scribble. Cooperative is confirmed (the other player will be Gandalf) and we have a lovely teaser video of the game after the break. Check it out.

If they released this on the cheap, I must admit that I would be slightly intrigued. But then, I am a LOTR whore.

Why is Aragorn a dwarf in this game?

lolz, I love all of these heavily anti-aliased "screenshots" that look nothing like how the games will actually look.

At first one recoils. But then you realize that "mature" LOTRO games have pretty much run their course and produced mostly crap, with a couple should-play-onces, so why not give kiddie games a shot.

The only issue I would have is what parent would want to buy a "kid friendly" game that focuses on slaying orcs. I mean, you'd think that sword in the picture gets put to good use.

Oops, I said LOTRO. I meant LOTR. Not a Freudian slip, I actually thought LOTRO was...ok.

That's actually kind of a cute idea to do a LotR game for kids.

Aragorn looks stunted for some reason. So if Samwise is telling the story of the game you're playing, what happens when you die? Does Samwise say "Oh shit, I don't remember him dying, know I remember, it went like this..." Then you restart the stage or something?

Well, that idea was actually already used in the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time game. If you'd slip up and die you'd hear the Prince say "No no, that's not how it went... may I start again?" or quite a number of variations on that. It was quite charming really. As is this game apparently.

the premise seems really stupid and I was about to post how retarded this is going to be until the last line where it says that it is sam retelling it- which could be really amusing since it will be all "hobbitized"

This looks like they've "crystal chronicled" the LOTR franchise. This looks horrible. Absolutely horrendous. It's absolutely not in the spirit of the books, films or anything else. It's like "My first LOTR" for children - children who probably HAVEN'T read LOTR.

If this game was based on "The Hobbit", which is a clear cut children's book, there wouldn't be a problem. But LOTR is not a children's book - although some children have read it, not many do - and so the art style is totally out of place.

The only good that could possibly come out of this is if the game encourages little Jimmy to read the actual books.
