In January we covered some buzz about Sony possibly dropping the price on the PS3. Most of our readers made it pretty clear that a price cut wouldn't make that much of a difference to them, and it was left at that.
Now, according to CNN Money, an analyst with Goldman Sachs predicts a $100 price cut in October, giving a bit more weight to the rumor. Yuji Fujimori of Goldman Sachs feels that a price drop will not hurt the long term profitability for the PS3, and it will give Sony a much needed push in the battle against rivals Nintendo and Microsoft.
The PS3, criticized by consumers and industry watchers for its high price, can cost up to $700, although the basic model retails for $499.
"The PS3 price has long been cited as high," Fujimori wrote, noting that cutting the price of game consoles has historically quadrupled volumes.
Fujimori sees simplification of design aiding PS3's profitability as well, noting Sony's (Charts) original PS began with 700 components and concluded with 200, while the PS2 started with 2,000 parts and finished with 600. The PS3 prototype had 4,000 components but now a shift to around 2,000 is in the pipeline.
Earlier in March, press reports in Japan said Sony is planning to introduce cheaper microprocessor chips for its PS3 to help bring down the price.
Now that Sony has had a little time to flesh out the plans for the PS3's future, and the library has developed a bit, will this potential price drop be enough to win the Wii60 crowd over? Or will there continue be cries of 'still not enough'?

There is probably a large group of people who have decided to get one but are waiting for at least the first price drop.
I'll get one eventually but for now I have other more "grown up" expenses I have to attend to. If there is a price drop in October I'll get one as a birthday present for myself.
But as for Volcanon about "360 Ports"... Recall that some of the games you're playing on the 360 are just as easilly "PS3 Ports"... Games that were originally meant to be released for the PS3, but lost exclusivity and are coming out on the 360. It is to be read as thus and not the opposite way around.
Why is that important... The answer is simple. The reason why consoles lose Exclusivity is because the developers fear that they may never get the return on the money they have invested into the development of some of our most beloved games... When a console goes into higher sales and numbers that can reflect, at the very least, a 100% return of development fund - exclusives lie within..
Games that are exclusives now could verily well see their successors once again "PS3 Exclusive" simply due to the numbers being right... I thought we would all know this by now?
I know it works both ways. BUT, I already own a 360. $500 to play games that are also on the 360 isn't a very smart investment IMO. I am not a sony hater, and will definately be buying a PS3 sometime, but I just don't think that $100 is a big enough price drop to justify the purchase for me, at least for now...
$500 ain't nothin' to Chad Warden.
By then things will be very different... there will be price cuts and decent library of games for both systems... the older of which will be cheaper then they are now. Only thing is, if Sony and Microsoft maintain their current plans, the 360 will only have like 3 years before it's replaced, while the PS3 will have like 7-8 years... Seems much better at that point to get the slightly more expensive but much longer living system, than a cosle on the verge of death... get a PS3, and then Xbox3 when it comes out about 3 years later... Sony has made many errors, but i think aiming for 10 year life span was a good idea... the improvements that one can make with technology in just 5 years at this point seem too minimal to garnish a brand new console buy
I didn't read the whole article but Uncharted kind of seemed like a poor mans Indiana Jones.
The X360 Premium system costs 299€ in Germany now.
That's a 300€ difference compared to the PS3. LOL
