There's no denying that electronics giant Sony has the art of branding down pat. They're still using the name Walkman for various products after almost 30 years, and we still know what it means (for the most part). Now it looks like they may be using one of their most popular brand names for cellular phones in the future. 

So far, everything with the PlayStation name has represented a gaming device, but Shack News says to expect a PlayStation Phone from Sony Ericsson.

"It's obviously something that we're looking at but right now I can't really comment," said Sony Ericsson's Peter Ahnegard to Pocket Gamer, before stirring the mill further: "Before Christmas, certainly... but exactly which Christmas I can't confirm!"

If we eventually do see a PlayStation Phone, it would not be the first time phones have had a Sony brand name attached. Walkman, Cybershot, and Bravia names have been applied to other models, but you have to wonder what a PlayStation Phone would really be.

"Up until today we haven't felt we could launch a PlayStation phone because it wouldn't be recognised as a true continuation of that brand of products," added Ahnegard. "We're not launching a brand of handset simply because we can, but because we can lead up to the expectations of the consumer."

As soemone who currently owns (and loves) a w810i and is looking forward to S-E next feature rich candybar phone the k850 with walkman and 5mp cybershot camera... I would rather see a S-E phone with playstation abilities tacked on than a playstation with S-E phone abilities tacked on. still doesnt mean ill get one.

If sony makes a Playstation phone, then i'm forever turning my back to ever thinking about considering to buy a PS3. If I ever do, I think of all the 360 games and PC games that are exclusive and the thought fades away.

If they could get Skype working with PSP, that would be interesting. A PSP phone though, I feel you are trying too hard and overcompensating, Sony. There's already a new PSP on the way, but I still feel that the new PSP (while it was always on the cards) is Sony trying to make up for PS3 not selling well.

Why would I want one, with iPhone out? Case closed.

i don't think they will release a PlayStation phone at all. All of their other branded phones actually made sense (the walkman phone came with headphones and supported album art and whatnot, the Cybershot phone had a 3.2Mp camera etc) but the PS phone would be eclipsed by the PSP. That would cannibalize your own sales. I would like to think that even Sony wouldn't be stupid enough to do this.
