Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

What do you get when you combine Half-Life 2 (the finest FPS of all time) with the lovingly hand crafted portals from Portal? Apparently you get the above video clip.

Primotech sent us notice of a piece they have created to show off the inevitable melding of the two stories via the magic of hacking the Source engine. Not content with merely showing off their new toys, Primotech has also included instructions on how you can carry the portal gun into battle in the original Half-Life 2, Episodes 1 and 2 and Half-Life 2 Deathmatch. They've yet to crack the secrets of using the physics-defying cannon in multiplayer, but it's really only a matter of time before someone discovers a way to make that happen as well.

As cool as all of this is, the obvious question one has to ask is: how long will it be before someone manages to pull the portals into Counterstrike Source or Team Fortress 2? The Valve Anti Cheat system probably has a way to detect the opening of rifts in the time-space continuum, but if Valve hasn't yet prepared for this you've going to see a lot of players whining about Spys who can now turn invisible, disguise themselves as a demoman and teleport their butterfly knives directly into the spines of opposing players.

I say allow the portal gun. It would add a whole new element to any valve game... I think it would be kickass...

Multiplayer is probably not going to happen without a major rewrite, fomr listening to the dev commentary on Portal, it seems that just having one set of portals is taxing enough, having 4, 8, 12? sets or portals would a) destroy your framrate as you draw the level 32 times a frame and b) create cpu melting numbers of the temporary physics 'bubbles' all over the shop.

Pff, old. All you have to do is take the HL2 map and drop it into the Portal maps folder for a quickie, or take the Portal gun and Portal character model and drop them in HL2 for a more secure port. I did this three days ago. Get with the times, Demonoid!

I was dicking around with this yesterday. It's awesome. It's a lot cooler in concept than in practice. When the levels aren't designed for portals, it's just kinda weird... but awesome still.

I think I'm most impressed by the fact that this even works. I was sort of under the impression that Valve had to do some pretty heavy behind the scenes coding to make the portal system work for Portal. It's pretty impressive to know that the Source engine is powerful enough to make these sort of calculations in real-time for levels that were not built from the ground up with the feature in mind.

Hrn. I've just realised my pc can handle the orange box more than adequately. To get it on pc or 360, that is the question. Superior control scheme plus modability, versus simplicity and couch sitting. This is a tough one.

You can't invoke rule 34, it's a statement. Rule 35, now, you can invoke. Which of course means that by now the stuff has already been written.

They did have a portal deathmatch mod a long time ago around the time when they first announced Portal. It was actually a lot of fun, although a bit laggy and the servers would crash often : /

Imagine the possibilities. But this would be impossible in any normal Half Life game that wasn't totally indoors. It'd just break the game.

You really to play more FPS games if you consider HL2, the finest one of all time Nex.

And this looks very interesting.

If you think about it: This wouldnt be impossible in multiplayer..

If they just would mark the portals, or give them cannels.. Like in halo3, where you can make portals in forge and mark them with different channel names,, so that you can link the portals, and you dont walk out of the wrong portal :)

Now if someone could do that in cs with the portal gun.. So that when a person walk trough his own portal he doesnt walk out in someone ells. And the lagging could maybe have been fixed with just making everyone only see trough their own portal..

Just maybe tough :)
