Portal 2: Need we say more?

Portal 2: Need we say more? photo
     sequel

Everybody should know about last year's critically acclaimed Portal by now, and if you don't, then just get the HELL out of our Internet and let the real people interact with each other, okay? Now that we've separated the human beings from the wretched failures, it's time for us to talk. Gather close, sit ye down and listen to the word of righteousness.

Portal 2 has been confirmed by Valve.

Now, as the collective semen of a thousand excited gamers launches through the air like a liquid volley of silken arrows, I must remind you that any idiot could have seen this coming a mile away -- Valve already talked of more Portal, and the first one was too successful to not be continued. This is the first solid confirmation of an official Portal 2, however, as specified by lead designer Kimberly Swift.

The world now holds its breath for further details, but knowing Valve, most of us will be dead of oxygen deprivation to the brain before we hear more. Until then, rejoice! The twisted world of Aperture Science looks set to suck us in once again, and we couldn't be happier.

Dude, first "Still Alive" announced for Rock Band, and then this?!?!

IT'S A GREAT DAY TO BE ALIVE!!!!!

(no pun intended)

Will be waiting to see where they take the storyline. Hope they find a way to fit GLaDOS back into the mix...or maybe an EVIL(ER) TWIN GLADOS!!!!

I love Portal, but I'm not sure where it would go for a sequel? I guess maybe it could serve as a lead-in to Episode 3, directly following the end of the first Portal? That might be cool.

The sequel doesn't have to go anywhere. Chell wasn't the first, nor likely the last test subject in Aperture Labs.

Much like Valve, I would like to reveal a new product that takes an already fantastic concept and makes it +1 better.

I call it...

Boobs +.

Any interested venture capitalists wanna get in on the ground floor?

so what are they going to do now? A gree third portal? That shifts time?

Are they going to freeze Chell for twenty years, then have her show up on a train and randomly run into the companion cube, who's all "hey, I'm secretly trying to infiltrate the GLAdoS Thingy in City 17?

It'll make total sense, and everybody will be all, OMG! NO WAI, and then people will be all "WAI!" and then it'll make lots of awards.

Stupid HL 2 story.

I hope this is a full game and not just a few hours again. Don't get me wrong, the length of that game was perfect (huh huh, length), but having a full blown story over 10-12 hours chasing down GlaDOS would own so hard my balls would come flying off.

I hope that they can come up with a "villain" as great as GLaDOS to propel the story along. It's going to be a hell of a challenge coming up with a game that is as surprising and enjoyable, but if anyone can do it, it's Valve :D

I don't see what's going to make Portal 2 worth a purchase unless it's a $20 game. For PC, you can download new maps. I don't really think they're going to do much other than add another 2 hours worth of gameplay. Not really worth it to me.
EvilSmeevil's Avatar
EvilSmeevil at 02/22/2008 07:32
While that's true about maps bein easily available for download on PC, I hardly think any of them are half as enjoyable as escaping from GlaDos's clutches. The story and the writing will be the deciding factor for me when Portal 2 is released, not the gameplay.

I think one of the best things about Portal was that, as funny and as different as it was, it was still tied into the Half-Life universe. I hope that the sequel fleshes out more of that story and overlaps with events in the Half-Life games. Also, I hope to god that the portal gun is what Freeman finds on the Borealis. Half-Life with portals and gravity guns? Yes please. In summation: DO WANT.

Can we possibly hope for another 90 minutes of gameplay! Yahoo!

Seriously, I hope they actually produce a 50-60 level puzzle game like the superior "Flash Portal" and not just a lame-o rehash of the first one.

Also, I'd like to see the difficulty for the puzzles increased about 100-fold. I think a lobotomized chimp could have finished the first Portal. If it took you longer than 3 hours to finish portal, I think you should hand in your controller and follow the companion cube down the incinerator.
ajay42's Avatar
ajay42 at 02/22/2008 09:33
I could not disagree more Jamn: the length of the original game kept the story and characters (well, pretty much just Glados) compelling and the mechanic from getting stale. If we want to see the 'game-as-art' paradigm move forward (and Portal is definitely the kind of game to be in that boat) gamers need to stop obsessing over things like forced lengthiness because of some very commercial sense of 'getting your money's worth.' Some games are naturally long; others are not. I LOVED the way the Portal creators at Valve seemed to know precisely how long their story could go, and how they could simultaneously and at a healthy clip ramp out both the narrative tension and the game play difficulty. Dragging it out for the sake of dragging it out would make it, well, like what the writers did to a show like Lost (which was originally supposed to be a short run of 3 seasons and which they have been shoving meaningless extra content into ever since.)

DryvBy at 02/22/2008 09:44
ajay42, Could you agree to spending $60 on a game with how short it was? I want longer gameplay?

The problem I had with portal was the side stuff, or the lack of. Sure, make the main story short and "cute" but make some stuff to do afterwards. You are completely done with everything Portal offers in 3 hours. That's not worth my money.
