Everybody should know about last year's critically acclaimed Portal by now, and if you don't, then just get the HELL out of our Internet and let the real people interact with each other, okay? Now that we've separated the human beings from the wretched failures, it's time for us to talk. Gather close, sit ye down and listen to the word of righteousness.
Portal 2 has been confirmed by Valve.
Now, as the collective semen of a thousand excited gamers launches through the air like a liquid volley of silken arrows, I must remind you that any idiot could have seen this coming a mile away -- Valve already talked of more Portal, and the first one was too successful to not be continued. This is the first solid confirmation of an official Portal 2, however, as specified by lead designer Kimberly Swift.
The world now holds its breath for further details, but knowing Valve, most of us will be dead of oxygen deprivation to the brain before we hear more. Until then, rejoice! The twisted world of Aperture Science looks set to suck us in once again, and we couldn't be happier.

Having just played the game last weekend...FUCK YES! I am curious how this will tie in with HL2: Episode 3. Will Portal 2 follow the episodic-gaming style of the HL2 episodes? Now that the Portal gun is in the wild, will this mean portal battles against antlions and headcrabs? Will Gordon's story intersect directly with Chell's story?
<3 can't wait, i posted Kim's interview in my blog.
Exciting news indeed!
Dude, first "Still Alive" announced for Rock Band, and then this?!?!
IT'S A GREAT DAY TO BE ALIVE!!!!!
(no pun intended)
Will be waiting to see where they take the storyline. Hope they find a way to fit GLaDOS back into the mix...or maybe an EVIL(ER) TWIN GLADOS!!!!
I'm making a note here: FUCK YEAH!
This was a triumph.
@necros
The ideas you propose make me week in the knees.
@Valve
Make this happen
I love Portal, but I'm not sure where it would go for a sequel? I guess maybe it could serve as a lead-in to Episode 3, directly following the end of the first Portal? That might be cool.
You know guys, I really don't think chell will be the main character in portal 2, unless portal 2 happens between episode 2 and episode 3.
yay, Portal was the best thing in the Orange Box...and thats saying something
I dont think this game can come out fast enough. I just hope its a lot longer of a game. .... I wanna eat the cake
The sequel doesn't have to go anywhere. Chell wasn't the first, nor likely the last test subject in Aperture Labs.
Much like Valve, I would like to reveal a new product that takes an already fantastic concept and makes it +1 better.
I call it...
Boobs +.
Any interested venture capitalists wanna get in on the ground floor?
Is this what Chad was referencing in his most recent CBlog post?
I can't say I didn't see it coming, but it is nice knowing it's official.
Chell for brawl confirmed.
so what are they going to do now? A gree third portal? That shifts time?
Are they going to freeze Chell for twenty years, then have her show up on a train and randomly run into the companion cube, who's all "hey, I'm secretly trying to infiltrate the GLAdoS Thingy in City 17?
It'll make total sense, and everybody will be all, OMG! NO WAI, and then people will be all "WAI!" and then it'll make lots of awards.
Stupid HL 2 story.
Console port, plz.
Will my weighted companion cube return too?
@Dexter
My guess is yes.
Also, ZOMG!?!?!
a sequel where your solving real world environmental puzzles
or an expansion pack where your just solving new puzzles back in the lab
or something else entirely
cant wait to find out more
Portal: Have your cake and eat it "two" edition
I hope this is a full game and not just a few hours again. Don't get me wrong, the length of that game was perfect (huh huh, length), but having a full blown story over 10-12 hours chasing down GlaDOS would own so hard my balls would come flying off.
Portal 2: Now with more cake! and, subsequently, more lies as well.
also, cocks.
Excellent, Portal was the only good thing in the Overrated box.
"...as the collective semen of a thousand excited gamers launches through the air like a liquid volley of silken arrows..."
This is why I look forward to just about everything Jim Sterling writes/says...his cunning combination of wit and the English language almost always result in resounding lulz.
I can't wait to try the advanced maps on Portal 2. I love all things that bend my mind! =D
Maybee the character from Portal is the next Alyx, after they kill her off.
UHHHHH! Shit. Nothing I will say will make this any better.
A new Portal will be incredible. I hope they incorporate some more of the hilarious backstory found on the Aperture Science webpage.
If I could describe how happy I am right now, I would. As such, anything short of heavenly bliss, in a very vague way, would take way too long, and would end up looking like Tycho's WALL OF TEXT but with less blood and more drool and semen.
I have to play the original one first — along with the rest of The Orange Box.
FUCK YEAH PORTAL 2!!
MY GREAT GRANDCHILDREN ARE GOING TO LOVE THIS GAME!!
think I just came a little :( *is embarrassed*
Now, as the collective semen of a thousand excited gamers launches through the air like a liquid volley of silken arrows, I must remind you that any idiot could have seen this coming a mile away
fapfapfap
BUT NOW ITS CONFIRMED!!!
fap fap faaaaaaaaaap
cream...
Portal 2 will just be more levels and new Mechanics. And even more Glados awesomeness.
I hope that they can come up with a "villain" as great as GLaDOS to propel the story along. It's going to be a hell of a challenge coming up with a game that is as surprising and enjoyable, but if anyone can do it, it's Valve :D
You had me at Now, as the collective semen of a thousand excited gamers launches through the air like a liquid volley of silken arrows...
Jim, have my babies.
Dear God yes.
Still, we knew it was coming. Eventually. :)
At least we know the Portals 2 arent a lie.
Just one request: MAKE IT GOOD
I don't see what's going to make Portal 2 worth a purchase unless it's a $20 game. For PC, you can download new maps. I don't really think they're going to do much other than add another 2 hours worth of gameplay. Not really worth it to me.
While that's true about maps bein easily available for download on PC, I hardly think any of them are half as enjoyable as escaping from GlaDos's clutches. The story and the writing will be the deciding factor for me when Portal 2 is released, not the gameplay.
Which is going to come out first, Duke Nukem Forever or Portal 2? I am sure that we will all be collecting social security and playing on our Playstation 7's, XBOX 1800's and Nintendo's Wii.
Portal doesn't need a sequel. It was perfect on its own, don't labour the point. This is almost worse that Bioshock for cellphones.
Don't over saturate a good thing.
There is science to be done!!!!
Now, as the collective semen of a thousand excited gamers launches through the air like a liquid volley of silken arrows, I must remind you that any idiot could have seen this coming a mile away
This line should be in the Dtoid Hall of Fame...Epic Jim simply Epic
I think one of the best things about Portal was that, as funny and as different as it was, it was still tied into the Half-Life universe. I hope that the sequel fleshes out more of that story and overlaps with events in the Half-Life games. Also, I hope to god that the portal gun is what Freeman finds on the Borealis. Half-Life with portals and gravity guns? Yes please. In summation: DO WANT.
"launches through the air like a liquid volley of silken arrows"
A beautiful, disturbing, hilarious image. Thank you, Jim.
Can we possibly hope for another 90 minutes of gameplay! Yahoo!
Seriously, I hope they actually produce a 50-60 level puzzle game like the superior "Flash Portal" and not just a lame-o rehash of the first one.
Also, I'd like to see the difficulty for the puzzles increased about 100-fold. I think a lobotomized chimp could have finished the first Portal. If it took you longer than 3 hours to finish portal, I think you should hand in your controller and follow the companion cube down the incinerator.
I could not disagree more Jamn: the length of the original game kept the story and characters (well, pretty much just Glados) compelling and the mechanic from getting stale. If we want to see the 'game-as-art' paradigm move forward (and Portal is definitely the kind of game to be in that boat) gamers need to stop obsessing over things like forced lengthiness because of some very commercial sense of 'getting your money's worth.' Some games are naturally long; others are not. I LOVED the way the Portal creators at Valve seemed to know precisely how long their story could go, and how they could simultaneously and at a healthy clip ramp out both the narrative tension and the game play difficulty. Dragging it out for the sake of dragging it out would make it, well, like what the writers did to a show like Lost (which was originally supposed to be a short run of 3 seasons and which they have been shoving meaningless extra content into ever since.)
ajay42, Could you agree to spending $60 on a game with how short it was? I want longer gameplay?
The problem I had with portal was the side stuff, or the lack of. Sure, make the main story short and "cute" but make some stuff to do afterwards. You are completely done with everything Portal offers in 3 hours. That's not worth my money.
Please tell me Chet & Erik are back on board as the writers.
JOY
This is good news for a good game. But please, DON'T call it Portal 2...
ummm.... yes. I must posses this soon.
Dryvby: You'd have a point if Portal cost $60. However, it doesn't.
If Portal 2 is standalone, it won't be three hours long either.
I wonder if it will be $60 or is there a chance it could be packaged together with HL Ep: 3?
Look at me still commenting when there's science to be done...
@Jim Sterling
Yes, but that's just how things work. It's $20 on the PC, so if anything, it would be $30 on the 360. $10 more for some reason.
I'd go with the HL EP:3 and Portal 2 pack in theory
OH BOY!! Enjoy it, guys. I'll probably be in my grave when it gets released.
But seriously, GLaDOS had better be the antagonist again. I can't imagine they'd drop her. She IS Portal, as far as I'm concerned.
And they better not go overboard with "CAKE LOL" and "COMPANION CUBE ROFL" humor. I'll strangle every last one of you fuckers that quote Poral endlessly.
Although, "Have your cake and eat it, too." would be a bitchin' tagline.
@ajay42: Yeah, except LOST has been fucking awesome since late Season 3, with little/no filler since. And blame ABC for the filler, not the writers. ABC was just trying to milk the show for all its worth, and the writers were forced to tapdance. Damon Lindelof is fairly outspoken about his distaste of the filler. </LOST DEFENSE FORCE ROFL>
Uh... FUCK YES
I'd rather they involved the portal gun in Episode 3. Can you imagine how awesome it would be to combine the portal gun and hordes of Combine?
I'm late, etc.
But, Portal sucked.
@ajay42
It has nothing to do with forced length. I felt the game was not a good puzzle game. Portal is what I would call a "casual game". It's trully something I would have expected to come out of PopCap and not Valve.
It also didn't have "characters". It had another faceless hero and a snarky computer antagonist that added nothing to the game, except to exist as a gimmick.
If this is a "game as art" game, then I think we have a long way to go.
Most of us will probably be dead by the time it comes out :P
