Portal 2 DLC will be free for PC, Mac, PS3 and Xbox 360 photo

Valve has announced "DLC #1" for Portal 2 and it's going to be free for all the versions of the game! The new content will be out this Summer and will include new test chambers, leaderboards, challenge mode for single and multiplayer and "more."

Got to say, really impressed that the DLC will be free. I mean, that's to be expected for PC and Mac players. It's the console side that I'm wowed with. Also note the title of this DLC has "#1" so we can expect more content down the line. Then again, this is Valve we're talking about and they always support their games long after release. Yes, Captain Obvious to everything I just said, I know.

see, the PS3 I expected with it's inclusion of Steam on the console, but the 360 surprised me, especially after the Left 4 Dead DLC on that console had to be purchased.

It might be free, but it won't do psn users any good if psn is still friggin down...I kid...but seriously, is the playstation steam access a seperate login on the ps3, or is being logged onto psn required?

@salamagogo

You need PSN to tie the accounts together... I haven't had the chance yet to try it out though, for obvious reasons.

If I had known this would be the case, I would have purchased the game for the 360.

That was honestly my first thought, too, but I still hold out hope that Steamworks on PS3 is the beginning of something great, and not just a vehicle for free DLC.

I think cause its on the PS3, it will be free on the Xbox 360. Cause how is Microsoft going to make people buy the 360 version if the DLC is charged on that version?
Mr Andy Dixon's Avatar - Comment posted on 04/29/2011 14:40

@JohnApocalypse

Agreed. Now that MS has lost their console-"exclusivity" with Valve, they're going to have an even harder time justifying charging for it.

I agree with @JohnApocalypse. Microsoft probably caved under pressure, now that their Xbox 360 wasn't the only console Valve games are released for.

Microsoft only allows one free dlc per game.

RDR? Left 4 Dead survival mode? Super Meat Boy?

Wasn't the RDR one free to everyone, and all other RDR paid for everyone?

Man, Portal 2 is such a ripoff. The game is only like 2 hours long and there's 80 dollars worth of day one DLC and Valve has gotten greedy and evil and totally not the coolest and nicest devs in the industry, amirite?

If any DLC from Valve isnt for free on the XBOX, you only have Microsoft to blame. PC has been enjoying free downloadable content from Valve for half a decade. No wait, longer.

Microsoft always allows one free bout of dlc. I bet the 49 cents on my debit card that they'll force Valve to charge for the next one.

As long as the DLC is free on PS3, MS will likely follow suit.

Anyone can make DLC free on a 360 if they so desire any time they want, no shocker there. They just aren't allowed to have Achievements with the DLC without prior approval and special arrangements with MS first. If the 360 DLC has achievements, THEN I will be impressed. :)

Nowadays a free dlc is rarely seen, unless it's some "project ten dollar" crap. But a free DLC coming from Valve hardly surprises me, they really are among the best out there when it comes to supporting their games(along with Mojang).
RenegadePanda's Avatar - Comment posted on 04/29/2011 14:59

Free DLC does exist on 360, no one ever looks for it because that would kill the fanboy arguments. Sure, it's not much, and not all great, but it's probably about equal to PS3's also-not-that-much level of free content.

Besides, why do all you greedy bastards expect things for free? If someone sat down and worked hard on something, wouldn't you want them to get paid for it? Or does everyone here just work at their jobs for hugs and rainbows instead of paychecks?

I don't find this all that surprising. The whole draw of releasing Portal 2 with Steam on PS3 was that Valve could easily update the game. And of course, like with Burnout Paradise, there's no way Microsoft force Valve to charge for the DLC on 360 when they are releasing it for free on the PS3.
