Portal 2 delayed until 2011 due to 'public safety' photo

Those of us looking forward to revisiting Aperture Science in time for Christmas have been dealt a sad blow today, with news that Portal 2 is being pushed back to 2011. In a typically humorous press release, Valve and Aperture Science have cited "public safety concerns" as the reason for the delay, adding that "MAKING GAMES IS HARD."

"Representatives from both companies acknowledged that public safety concerns factored into the decision," explains Valve. "They went on to say that even though Portal 2 will arrive slightly later than planned, all life on earth won't instantaneously stop as every molecule in your body explodes at the speed of light, which is what would happen should a rip ever appear in the fabric of Valve Time."

Well, that sucks. Still, Valve isn't known for rushing its products if it means the quality will suffer, so we can at least take some solace from the fact that Portal 2 is likely spending the extra development time productively. Oh, and Valve can keep sending press releases in this style. Like, all the time.

June 9, 2010 -- Aperture Science, doing business as Aperture Laboratories LLC, in partnership with Valve today announced the successful completion of an ethics-review-panel-supervised release date restructuring process. Portal 2, the sequel to the ground-breaking title that earned over 30 Game of the Year awards despite missing its original ship date, is now targeted for a 2011 release.

Representatives from both companies acknowledged that public safety concerns factored into the decision. They went on to say that even though Portal 2 will arrive slightly later than planned, all life on earth won't instantaneously stop as every molecule in your body explodes at the speed of light, which is what would happen should a rip ever appear in the fabric of Valve Time.

"Also, the game will be even better," they added, missing an historic opportunity to create the first product delay press release to mention that a product is being delayed to make it worse.

To ask questions about how close we all came to dying, or to ask futile questions about the previously announced E3 ***PORTAL-2-THEMED-FOR-GOD'S SAKE*** surprise or, less futilely, to schedule an appointment to attend a Portal 2 screening at the Valve booth during E3, please contact Valve's delegate to the EU's Valve Time Studies Group, Doug Lombardi.

I'm really curious to see what their big E3 announcement will be. If it's Half-Life 3 or Counter-Strike 2 I might just poop my pants.

Wasn't 90% of the fanbase expecting this, anyway. Valve time and all that jazz?

I STILL EXPECT A PORTAL 2 SHOWING AT E3, PLEASE!

This could be making way for whatever suprise they have in store for E3, or it could just be typical Valve.

It's still pretty annoying no matter how funny they make it :/

My ideal VALVe press conference:

*VALVe guy makes minor intro, cue announcement trailer*

*Some CG plays, Left 4 Dead 3 logo appears on-screen*

*audience cheers*

*record scratch*

*Crowbar breaks the "Left 4 Dead" leaving only the "3"*

Screen shows Gordon's signature weapon with the number 3 on it. "Crow 3 bar" if you will, HALF-LIFE 3 COMING 2011

*Audience ROARS!* *fade to black*

*The Internet™ goes down*

I like your explanation best. Lies are the bedrock of Portal.

Personally I don't care what it is. I expected a delay. I will still get to play it in due time. Unlike DNF or HL2E3.

All Valve fans know Valve time, but damn that's disheartining. I don't even know if that's a word. With this delayed and no Ep.3 (could still be HL3) they had better give me L4D3 just for something Valve to play.
Also, Rammstein be getting the applause today. *claps*

I was having a hard time believing it would be out this year anyway. I'd rather have a good game come late than a rushed, re-hash sequel.

Hmm I think there must be more to it. I would be surprised if nothing is released from valve by the end of year after the annual left4dead releases. At least that's what I hope.

The l4d3/hl3 idea is awesome, I would cream my slacks if they did that!

Time for the mandatory Miyamoto quote on delays:

"A delayed game is eventually good. A bad game is forever bad."

The simple fact that Valve said they were having trouble developing this is a good thing. If it was just a rehash, then making Portal 2 would be a cakewalk.
