In before death threats after telling people to "get over the Dreamcast"...
Finally someone who speaks the truth! The system has been dead for10 years get over it people.
@Wakatashi
I don't know if that's a Doc Holliday reference, but I love you either way.
I will never back down on the DC. I'm not gonna climb down anyone's throats for disliking it, but all my kingdom for some consistency. I just can't keep up anymore.
Have you actually got some examples of the same people changing their minds? I always hate that argument that "OMG THE TRENDS CHANGE" when they're in fact different people with different opinions so people aren't in fact part of some giant hive-mind.
Don't get me wrong though, they are classics.... I skipped the Dreamcast personally, in favor of Xbox and PS2, but I loved my master system, Genesis and Saturn just as much as the next old school gamer out there.
I gave my old Dreamcast and games away last year (to another Dtoider). As you've said, mine sat in a closet and was never used. I plugged it in and played on the Dreamcast's anniversary and realized that I didn't want to sit through load screens and play old games. I would rather spend my time with the more current offerings.
it's just fun, seriously
I've been thinking about purchasing my own dreamcast for a while because it'd be cheap and a really nice thing to have around for me since I enjoy the only dreamcast games I've had
I dont think that makes me someone who can't "get over the past" or whatever, just a fan
It's not a bad console, but I hate it when people froth at the mouth over it.
Also, I've already seen some portable Dreamcasts that were a lot more eye-pleasing than this. I'd never buy one, because what's the point of a Dreamcast if you can't hook an arcade stick to it? Jet Grind Radio, that's about it.
Which dreamcast games haven't been ported or haven't gotten a sequel that were actually great?
The Dreamcast would have saved Sega - the problem is that Bernie Stolar's massive mishandling of everything post-Genesis caused WAY too much financial problems. They didn't have a chance in hell.
Bernie went out of his way to prevent RPGs from getting on the Saturn, for instance, because he was convinced Americans wouldn't play them. And this was AFTER Final Fantasy VII came out. It's because of this that when the Dreamcast came out, a lot of Third-Parties (like EA) refused to join because of how much the corporate heads fucked up the Saturn's lifespan.
THAT'S why Sega went under. The Dreamcast was their last chance - they just didn't stand a chance because three generations of fuckups can't be fixed by a console that was on par with the PS2 even before the PS2 came out.
Marvel vs Capcom 1 (If you say "Just play MvC2", you obviously haven't played MvC1.)
Jet Grind Radio (If you say "Just play JSRF", you obviously haven't played JGR.)
Power Stone & Power Stone 2 (They may have technically been ported to the PSP, but I'd like to see 4 people gathered around a PSP screen and having nearly the amount of fun they'd have on a big screen TV with Power Stone 2.)
Vampire Chronicle (Again, may have technically been ported to the PSP, but what good is a 6-button fighter without the ability to use a fight pad or arcade stick? Answer: None.)
Cannon Spike (It's like a top-down beat 'em up mixed with a shmup. Pure Awesome.)
Cosmic Smash (It's like Virtua Tennis mixed with Arkanoid. It's fun as hell.)
Giga Wing, Giga Wing 2 (Any shmup fun should know of these.)
Project Justice - Rival Schools 2 (Before SF4, this series was proof that you could do a 2D fighter in 3D space - and make it fun. Hell, I prefer this series over SF4 leaps and bounds.)
Shenmue. (Seriously, do I need to explain this?)
Tech Romancer (A strange 3D fighter that would make any anime fan nerdgasm.)
Street Fighter III: Double Impact (It's still the only way to experience New Generations and Second Impact at home. Legally, anyway.)
I didn't. It definitely was a step up from the Saturn, but still... I stopped caring about Sega after the Genesis.
So basically a bunch of fighting games that were either ported, on the PS1 or have several other versions of the series? Outside of Jet Grind Radio, I can't really sympathize.
Again, did you play those ports? Obviously not, if you think the PS1 port of MvC1 is even 25% as good as the Dreamcast port.
Also, NO, NOT JUST A BUNCH OF FIGHTING GAMES! Cosmic Smash, Cannon Spike, Giga Wing, Shenmue and several others on that list were obvious not fighting games.
Bah. If you aren't going to pay attention, why bother.
@Master Snake
Honestly, I consider the Saturn the best Sega system, Dreamcast a close second, with the Genesis only slightly better than the Master System.
I loved my green-screen brick Game Boy of four AA batteries, but it's time to move on. MOVE ON PEOPLE.
I hope it wasn't snatched from you while you were on the shitter. That's just trauma.
Also, I was shitter-gaming Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition on a TurboExpress before shitter-gaming was hot.
That was a very limited Collection. No Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue, Sonic Adventure 2, Rez or Jet Grind Radio? Sega's Bass Fishing over any of those games? Or even the odd send-off Segagaga?
Even great DC third-part games like Mars Matrix, Record of Lodoss War, Grandia 2, Capcom vs. SNK are missing from PSN/XBL/Whatever.
Street Fighter III: Third Strike is getting an online version so that's something less out of the ol' DC strack.
One thing that I like the Dreamcast that because many of the games are somewhat more arcade and hardcore they tend to stand repeated plays even if some of the game's graphics don't hold up to modern games.
If not it's here to stay.
