Pop'n Music Wii: still pretty, still no proper controller photo

When Pop'n Music was announced for the Wii at E3 this year, kitty and bunny ears everywhere perked up among its dedicated fans. They then dropped when it turned out that, not only was there no 9-button mode, there wouldn't even be a traditional Pop'n controller to play it with.

I can somewhat understand the need to dumb everything down to appeal to a wider audience, but if you're familiar with Pop'n, this is rather like Rock Band coming without any guitars or a drum kit. DDR with no dance pad. Admittedly, the game can be difficult if you want to swing that way, but to remove those options entirely for the game's established fanbase pretty much rips out its Bemani spirit and stomps on it.

You can rabble and cry "elitist" all you want, but If so much of what made the game what it was has been stripped away, why call it by the same name? New IPs are a good thing, you know. I'm all for inviting newcomers and giving people an easy version of the game, but here was a great chance to appeal to a more hardcore audience, which has instead been completely left out in favor of the former.

If you've never played it, however, this could still be a nice gateway into the world of rhythm games for you. Some of the franchise's beloved characters are still around, and at least we can say it sort of looks like Pop'n Music, which means it immediately beats the pants off of the abomination that was Beat 'n Groovy. You can see for yourself by taking a look at these new screenshots in the gallery below.

While I agree it's silly to keep the name and offer what is going to be essentially a different game, I know why they did it. It's easier to launch something with an established fanbase than one without. Even though 90% (or more) of the fans of Pop'n Music will immediately realize it's not going to be the same, there are still a few who will check it out, and then to everybody else, it's a new IP to them.

I recently played a Pop'n Music game (15) for the first time after finding out it was at our local Gameworks. Now I can really feel the fans' plight over things like Beat 'n Groovy and not having a proper controller to play with at home; I would absolutely go bonkers over a true American home version of the game, just so I wouldn't have to drive an hour just to get my fix.

I agree that Pop'n Music isn't Pop'n Music without the traditional controller, but at the same time, I'm kinda happy to see Mimi and Nyami appear in an American game with their designs (mostly) untouched.

@megaStryke:
Just look it up on YouTube. It should become obvious after about five master play videos.

Disregard my comment, I misinterpreted the question.

@megaStryke: From what I've heard, three of the buttons are mapped to the Wiimote and two to the Nunchuk. So you just flick them up and down and the character on the screen hits whichever color is supposed to be hit, as long as you've flicked the right controller. It sounds as if it makes the game way too easy.

Konami hates its fans. Though they did give us that great IIDX controller with the US Beatmania release.

Why can I not have a proper Pop'n Music game..? I will even play with a controller, I was rocking the controller back in the Dreamcast days, but for god's sakes give me 9-button mode!!

@Ashley

So on the console that thrives on peripherals, Konami decides to release an iteration of a peripheral-based rhythm game sans peripheral. Juicy.

As I play this horrendous game they called Pop n' music for the wii. I could sense Konami laughing at me as I randomly wave my arms around like a mindless idiot hitting the five buttons on the screen. I had to turn on high speed to get it right to the beat of the song.

REALLY?? COME ON NOW. KONAMI WHY YOU DO DIS? The license songs are pretty good, I wish to play them on a REAL pop n' music machine.

I have a feeling Konami does not love us here in the states.

Bah, so this is like playing DDR on a controller? What crap. I really like Pop'n Music, even though it kicked my ass constantly (thinking on two levels screws me up), but I wanted to get good at it, I really liked the game. I was super excited when I heard about this, and when I saw what it was, it wasn't it. Sad face.

I wonder if it it's possible to wire a pop'n controller to a wiimote?

As long as it doesn't end up like the abomination that was the XBLA port of Pop'n Music we're all going to be fine.
