Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Next question!
Or skip the tutorial and not know what the fuck to do.
Also most of them suck.
Why IS Destructoid.com doing research for MacroShaft?
And seriously...I just went out to the marketplace and looked at the community games based on popularity: first page, two are massaging "games", and two have the word "fart" in them.
Second page? "TV Calibration" (which is exactly what it sounds like), "Fireplace" (yep...a virtual fireplace), "Barf and Beer", and "Calculator 360".
Awesome. 200 points for a calculator on my TV.
Dishwasher and Carneyvale show that great games can be made with XNA, but at the moment it's very hard to seperate the wheat from the massive amounts of chaff.
As some have mentioned, the time limited demos don't help things. It would be better to have demos more in line with the kind on XBLA or retail title demos.
With that said, I recently purchased my first community game. So it's not that I refuse to buy them, I just don't find many that hook me enough that I want to spend money on.
Community games arent available in Europe. We can download them via an US-Account (which I did), but only demos, we have to get some points on these US accounts to buy these games etc..
However, the screen (which you see at the beginning of every community game) is translated (I can see the German Introscreen) even though these games are not available here.
Btw, they suck.
...but seriously, I don't usually buy them because they're not usually that good. I've only played one Community Game that I've found worth buying (Carnivale Showtime) thanks to Dtoid's review and I'll probably wait for the internet to bring any other good ones to my attention.
I could handle downloading XBLA trials every week to see if they're any good, but Community Games are updated too random for me to try all of them out and give them a chance.
Also, the trial time is too short. I need at least an hour of straight gameplay to decide if Fireplace is worth buying or not.
Plus it looks like any piece of shit can get onto the service, so this whole peer review thing they have is a joke. Why should I sift through a bunch of shitty games just to try, and find a gem amongst them? Its just not worth the hassle really! I buy XBLA game, but I will probably never ever buy a community game.
Seriously there are a lot of reasons why. The major being I don't care enough to pay for a game that is generally going to be of lesser quality than a regular Arcade game.
Unfortunately, whenever I load up the Community section of the marketplace, I see useless and silly garbage, like the Massage program or the clock and fireplace. I want to compare it to the iPhone apps mess but at least those aren't specified as games. To go to the Community Games section and see a program that will let me tell time with a giant cat on screen with clocks in it's eyes? And having to pay 200 moon bucks for the privilege? Give me a break.
There are a handful of decent gems in there, but the majority of it is harmed by laziness, half-assed concepts, and low creativity. I hardly open the Community Games tab anymore. It's like staring at a tab full of Coffeetime Crosswords and no end in sight.
I also don't buy XBL Community Games because I already have tons and tons of retail and XBLA games, some of which I haven't even played yet. If I had spare time, I would look into the Community Games more, I'm sure.
Also, I do not have an Xbox.
