Poll: Why don't you buy Community Games? photo

Hey D’toiders, we need your opinion. This is the first poll of two, asking for your thoughts on the quality of Xbox Live Arcade titles versus Community Games. The goal of this poll is simple: If you don’t regularly buy Community Games, tell us why. Above are five choices, if none of them apply to you, click “Other” and shoot us an e-mail at nicholson [at] destructoid dot com.

Also, we’re encouraging you to expand on your vote in the comments section. Say, for example, you voted for “I don't buy Community Games because they don't appeal to me,” how you’ve reached that conclusion. (Have you been burned by a purchase before? Are production values too low?)

Discuss and vote or DIE. (After the break.)

90% of XBLA games are complete garbage, and the community games with a few exceptions, are of an even lower quality.

4 minute demo isn't long enough for some of these games. Some of them require lengthy tutorials that after you get through it, the demo is over.

Or skip the tutorial and not know what the fuck to do.

Also most of them suck.

I like the pricing for community games but quality is few and far between. Its also pretty hard to find them in the Marketplace.

I don't buy anything from XBLM due to a philosophical objection to their hotdogs & buns monetary system.

It's a time problem. There's so much coming out on all of the downloadable platforms that I don't have the desire to look up information about what's coming out, much less wade through it directly and guess.

Just because I don't know enough about them. They're hardly promoted anywhere, most certainly not much on the 360 dashboard. And I have enough games to play sadly that I don't have time to go out looking for more.

I don't care if a game is XBLA or Community, if I'm interested in it, then I'll check it out. I have no prejudice towards buying a community or an XBLA game, they're are simply both platforms to me and I will buy a game from either just as easily as the other.

Digging through the plethora of games to find a somewhat decent one...meh. Rather spend the time actually playing a game.

And seriously...I just went out to the marketplace and looked at the community games based on popularity: first page, two are massaging "games", and two have the word "fart" in them.

Second page? "TV Calibration" (which is exactly what it sounds like), "Fireplace" (yep...a virtual fireplace), "Barf and Beer", and "Calculator 360".

Awesome. 200 points for a calculator on my TV.

While there are decent titles there's also a lot of shit - fart machines, 'massagers', a calculator... who buys this shit? M$ should tighten up the quality controls, people can't take the XNA seriously with all this dross - a lot of which isn't actually games - coming out. I also think that the price point is too high at the moment, people know these games cost next to nothing to make, and since as you said they lack achievements, leaderboards, and high production values, they just cost too much. Finally, they aren't being promoted at all, and that's something the devs should take up with M$, a weekly appearance on the Spotlight channel or Inside Xbox would be good.

Dishwasher and Carneyvale show that great games can be made with XNA, but at the moment it's very hard to seperate the wheat from the massive amounts of chaff.

I think there are a lot of crappy games on the Community channel. Sometimes it's poor production values, but sometimes the idea behind the game isn't appealing.

As some have mentioned, the time limited demos don't help things. It would be better to have demos more in line with the kind on XBLA or retail title demos.

With that said, I recently purchased my first community game. So it's not that I refuse to buy them, I just don't find many that hook me enough that I want to spend money on.

Severe lack of quality. People don't seem to understand that just because you CAN make a game doesn't mean that you SHOULD. There's a big difference between a developer and a great developer, and nowhere is that more evident than in the Community Games section of XBL.

As said before:
Community games arent available in Europe. We can download them via an US-Account (which I did), but only demos, we have to get some points on these US accounts to buy these games etc..

However, the screen (which you see at the beginning of every community game) is translated (I can see the German Introscreen) even though these games are not available here.

Btw, they suck.

NO ACHIEVEMENTS MAKE KIT ANGRY

...but seriously, I don't usually buy them because they're not usually that good. I've only played one Community Game that I've found worth buying (Carnivale Showtime) thanks to Dtoid's review and I'll probably wait for the internet to bring any other good ones to my attention.

I could handle downloading XBLA trials every week to see if they're any good, but Community Games are updated too random for me to try all of them out and give them a chance.

Also, the trial time is too short. I need at least an hour of straight gameplay to decide if Fireplace is worth buying or not.

Why isn't there a option for all of the above? I don't even take the time to look at the community games on my 360, at alone want to buy one of them. Sometimes I see them being previewed on different gaming sites, but they just look like low quality flash game that I could get for free on the internet if I wanted that.

Plus it looks like any piece of shit can get onto the service, so this whole peer review thing they have is a joke. Why should I sift through a bunch of shitty games just to try, and find a gem amongst them? Its just not worth the hassle really! I buy XBLA game, but I will probably never ever buy a community game.

For the most part they don't appeal to me. I check the Community Games section out a few times a week, but have only downloaded trails a few times. The lower quality on most of 'em doesn't help, and I'm a bit ashamed to admit that the lack of acheivements hurts a bit too, but overall it is the lack of interest on my part in a lot of 'em. There are a few ones that appeal to me in there though, there's just so much crap to wade through...

Poor quality games that range from mildly amusing to downright useless keeps me from paying for a community game. However, release something of quality that's creative and fun and I'm on it like a cardigan on a librarian.

#2-5.

Seriously there are a lot of reasons why. The major being I don't care enough to pay for a game that is generally going to be of lesser quality than a regular Arcade game.

Quality is my reason. Usually a 500 point XBOX Live game is better than the most expensive community game.

Community Games got me excited because I hoped to see creative output from otherwise cash strapped developers who couldn't afford to invest so much into a game to make it a full XBLA release.

Unfortunately, whenever I load up the Community section of the marketplace, I see useless and silly garbage, like the Massage program or the clock and fireplace. I want to compare it to the iPhone apps mess but at least those aren't specified as games. To go to the Community Games section and see a program that will let me tell time with a giant cat on screen with clocks in it's eyes? And having to pay 200 moon bucks for the privilege? Give me a break.

There are a handful of decent gems in there, but the majority of it is harmed by laziness, half-assed concepts, and low creativity. I hardly open the Community Games tab anymore. It's like staring at a tab full of Coffeetime Crosswords and no end in sight.

I don't buy XBL Community Games because, despite the efforts of Jim Sterling, there are so many of them, and there is not a good way of knowing if they are worth the money.

I also don't buy XBL Community Games because I already have tons and tons of retail and XBLA games, some of which I haven't even played yet. If I had spare time, I would look into the Community Games more, I'm sure.

Well not only do I hate buying games from XBL as the process of buying points is stupid and the conversion rates don't seem to be quite right. As for community games I have no idea whether they're good or not, they don't look appealing and they're overpriced like any other XBL game.

I don't buy community games because Micro$oft charges 99 Dollars for a 20 gig laptop hard drive. This is probably because they're having to pay the hardware manufacturers to keep making them. since... ya know, the smallest size hard drive you can get easily right now is 160 gig.

It's mostly because the games are just a bunch of puzzle games or lame-looking shooters; there isn't much that looks compelling or interesting beyond some crappy flash game I could play online for free. The basic idea of the service still appeals to me because it could allow for some original concepts that you can only get from and indie environment like that, but as of right now I feel that there are few games that do something interesting enough to merit a purchase.
