While there's nothing particularly manly about the PSP, or feminine of the Nintendo DS, a recent survey by Net Asia Co of Japanese people shows a preference by each sex.
They conducted an internet poll of 401 mobile phone users ranging from the age of 15 to 29, asking what portable game console each person preferred. It's a bit strange that they decided to divide the Nintendo DS and the DS Lite in separate categories, but I suppose that some may prefer the "DS Phat."
For the guys, the majority (42%) picked the PlayStation Portable, beating out about 30% for the DS Lite and about 16% for the DS classic. In contrast, about 80% of the women polled chose the Nintendo DS in some form, with 52.2% picking the DS Lite. Only 8.8% of the ladies picked the PSP.
As for other interesting stats, TechOn says that the majority of these Japanese gamers don't get out much with their game systems. The majority (81.5%) say that they play their portable in their "room." What's the point of it being portable, then? That stat goes up (84.7%) when limited to only guys.
What about you? I suppose I fit with the Japanese figures, as I'm a guy and I prefer to play my PSP over my DS.

Agreed. PSP over DS; however the wife agrees with me. Neither of us plays at home for the most part, and both prefer the lite (brightness!)
You know how I know your gay?
I play my DS way more. Only lately have I actually picked up my PSP and played it over my DS. Otherwise it's dead.
I play my portables everywhere though. Usually though in my room unless it's a friend outing and it includes the metro.
I think it's pretty clear why they split the DS into light and phat, otherwise they would have no story since then the DS would win for both genders(though clearly more on the female side). Fun with statistics 101. As for me, I play mostly on the train and on the can, two places where gaming just makes it a better experience.
I currently have too many unbeaten DS games to buy a PSP. Advance Wars DS, Portrait of Ruin, Dragon Slime, Etrian Odyssey, Final Fantasy III, Rune Factory, Pokemon, Lunar Knights... I've got work to do. Working on probably the slowest game on that list, Etrian Odyssey, right now. I love me some RPG's though, so I'll probably pick up a PSP when it's cheap and I don't feel guilty spending moneys on it.
Those girls are yummy.
For the guys, the majority (42%) picked the PlayStation Portable, beating out about 30% for the DS Lite and about 16% for the DS classic.
I'm not a math teacher... but that has guys picking 46% for the DS and 42% for PSP
"Those girls are yummy"
That they are. I don't have either portable but thought I'd comment anyway because those girls are indeed yummy.
DS4life . . . the life of the system at least. Even working at gamestop for nearly 8 months i never saw enough games that piqued my interest on the psp to warrant a purches. i love advance wars and all the nintedo RPGs, even old ones like golden sun, etc that are from systems long past, along with all the brain games. it's not the psp's FAULT, it just can't compete with the DS for my attention.
I'm with the ladies. Touching is good.
I prefer good games, no matter which system they land on. ;)
I'm DS (lite) all the way, despite owning both. It's just a much better portable console in every way. The battery life is longer, the brightness has better options, the unit itself is smaller, and the games tend to be far better for short bursts, which is all I want in a portable. It's also got quirky ass stuff like ouendan and professor layton, and I just eat that shit up.
@Colette
Hell yes they are.
Visually, I love my PSP way more than DS, the screen still mesmerizes me like I'm a fly and it's a bug zapper. But there are so many more good games on the DS so I definitely play it more. And I feel comfortable playing my DS on the subway to and from work. I've never taken my PSP on the subway for fear that someone will mug me for it. Oh what I wouldn't give to be a huge black man.
BRB, Im gonna stare at that pic for a good 2 hours
I don't have a DS, I don't like minigame-games, and I don't like playing rpgs on a handheld. My wife plays my psp more than I do though.
for me
PSP > DS
i like psp games a lot more.
i prefere psp and i'm a guy. it just might be because i've been playing a lot of final fantasy crisis core, god of war chains, and patapon. looking forward to echochrome and little big planet on psp.
I guarantee the PSP love there is mostly because of Monster Hunter.
Anyway, I only have a DS Lite and am happy with it. There's absolutely nothing about a PSP that is attractive to me.
Oh, and for the record I'm a man.
I play my DS on trips. But not too much as I get car sick sometimes.
I love my psp because of more mature games(yes),but there also some bizarre gems I like to play every once in while(patapon, loco roco,beats...)
I've got nothing against the DS but I guess I got sick of nintendo's dominance, and competition is always good.
I think the DS whouldn't have been half as good if there wasn't competition from the psp.
linuxguy: "I think the DS whouldn't have been half as good if there wasn't competition from the psp. "
Precisely. That's why I sort of have a live-and-let-live attitude with the PSP, because competition breeds quality.
As far as game taste, I don't care about "mature" stuff, and I don't like action RPGs as I prefer straight-up old skool JRPGs. I like Kirby, Mario, Metroid, and Zelda, so it just boils down to me being a "Nintendo guy" more than a "Sony guy". That said, I still love the hell out of my PS2.
@linuxguy: I'd bet there'd be no DS if not for the PSP. We'd probably have the Super GBA or something.
I play my PSP in my bikini all the time and I'm a dude.
Also, Asain and Japanese girls are cute.
As a dude I play my DS way more than I play my PSP. To say that I just found my PSP in a drawer, I thought I had sold it.
Ah wells, I agree I love my DS and easily passed when someone tried to gift me their dusty PSP, and I shamefully admit my mother and sisters are all hooked on the DS as well.
I love me some asian girls.
You bought a PSP in response/to curb Nintendo's success? That's pretty lame. They're both good, I like the DS more because it's a better portable console (stress the portable part). With the PS2 and the PSN around, technically we have no need for the PSP. Most of the PSP's top games end up on PS2, and Echochrome is a joint PSN and PSP release. Now, this logic is based entirely on "me no get Patapon" bitterness, but there's a sliver of truth there. In retrospect I don't like how Sony's been abusing the Playstation brand to push Blu-Ray and what was largely a jack-of-all-trades yet master of none for a long time, the PSP (does it count that you can do lots of things well, but for a really short time? My laptop has better battery life than the PSP).
"The majority (81.5%) say that they play their portable in their "room." What's the point of it being portable, then? That stat goes up (84.7%) when limited to only guys."
Well if most of these guys are talking about their PSPs it's probably because of the less than four hour battery life that they play them indoors.
Men like putting both hands on a set of buttons.
Women like holding a small probe.
Ladies and gents, surely you see the connection?
I am going to echo what BlackSheep said. This poll actually shows that both genders prefer the DS over the PSP.
These are misleading servey results :/
Yeah, BlackSheep picked up on exactly what I thought upon reading this: 46% > 42%
I also mostly play my portables in my room. My metro trips aren't long enough to really play anything and if I'm out of the house I'm probably doing something. However, on long road trips both systems get a little loving.
I prefer my DS over my PSP, but I have also bought fewer games for the PSP. The overall build of the DS makes me more likely to chuck it in my pocket and take it with me, whereas the PSP feels very breakable (even with the polycarbonite armour).
Oh and <Asian female, DS lite and small penises joke goes here>
I love my psp. I use to own a DSlite i bought it since i was going to otakon then sold it to my friend a few months later. No games that really appealed to me. PSPs got lots of good rpg (valkyrie profile anyone) not to mention i own a ps3 with all the benefits that come from combining the two.
DS. it has touch screen.
Pic saved.
Oh ho ho! I see what they did there...
