Politician proposes health warning for videogames photo

If you don't want some anger to go with your corn flakes this morning, look away now. A new bill has been proposed by congressman Joe Baca which would require a health warning on videogames, telling consumers that gaming could lead to aggressive behavior, despite the fact that research on the subject is utterly non-conclusive.

The democratic Senator introduced the "Video Game Health Labeling Act of 2009" last week, declaring that the games industry has failed to act enough like a surrogate parent to kids. Apparently putting pseudo-truths and blatant scaremongering on the covers of games would make everything better and there'd be no more violence EVER ... apart from State approved violence, of course.

Game packages would come with the following message if this bill passes: "WARNING: Excessive exposure to violent video games and other violent media has been linked to aggressive behavior."

Baca puts the blame solely on the videogame industry, not on the parents who let their kids play violent games. "The videogame industry has a responsibility to parents, families and to consumers – to inform them of the potentially damaging content that is often found in their products.

"They have repeatedly failed to live up to this responsibility.  Meanwhile research continues to show a proven link between playing violent games and increased aggression in young people.  American families deserve to know the truth about these potentially dangerous products."

Apparently the very obvious ESRB labels aren't good enough.

The Senator believes that the industry "must be held accountable" for the rare instances of violent behavior that games have had tenuous-at-best links to in the past. America is the most powerful nation in the world, and there are people in charge of it who are panicking over videogames. This has gone beyond pathetic and into the realm of the farcical.

CORRECTION to this asshole's label:

"WARNING: Excessive exposure to violent video games and other violent media has been linked to but has NEVER been proven to cause aggressive behavior."

People like this are exactly why we need to just nuke Washington D.C. and start over. Well, maybe not nuke it. The buildings are quite nice, but the people are a hell of a stain, as this moron is proving.

Hey I got an idea why does the US government be "held accountable" for the fucking murders going on in Iraq, both US and middle eastern boys are dying for no reason and to my knowledge every senator except 1 voted for the Iraqi war, why aren't they held accountable!?

And once again taxpayer money will be wasted. Programs like after-school, meals for senior citizens, and shelters for the homeless will have their funding cut. Taxes will be raised. Why? Because this jerk is going to fight to get the bill passed, which will then be overturned because its unconstituional.

Awesome!

Oh, for fuck's sake.

I think this chronic lack of accountability in the US is going to have to go out of style eventually-- I swear, listening to my brother's tales as a HS teacher makes me long for a return to corporal punishment.

This reminds me of the PMRC battle with Twisted Sister et al in the 80s - "Heavy Metal is evil etc etc" - which resulted in the "PARENTAL ADVISORY" sticker being introduced.

Thing is, once that was on front covers you had a guaranteed hit!

So bring on this label, it'll only make games even cooler you pen pushing square motherFFUUUUUUUUCKERS!

Wait...who are they going to blame when parents ignore these warnings as well?

Good thinking, Baca. The parents who ignore ESRB ratings are going to pay attention now that it has an extra label on the packaging.

Wow. The bastard even has his own cop-out on his web site.

"I am very interested in hearing your views on issues of importance to you. Due to the large volume of US Mail, email and faxes I receive, I am only able to accept messages from residents of the 43rd Congressional District of California."

Fucking coward.

There needs to be commercials made about the politicians who are wasting taxpayers money by focusing on video games laws that end up going to court and get shot down. And when they do go to court, the politician(s) that proposes the law doesn't pay the legal fees for the state...the people do.

Here's something that would be totally original: a politician that comes out and tells parents TO DO THEIR FUCKING JOBS. You, the parent, needs to use some intelligence and realize that maybe a game titled "Grand Theft Auto" isn't appropriate for a 6-year old. Adding more warnings isn't going to do squat if the parent just doesn't care. I've seen it many times: kid whines enough in the game store and the parent opens their wallet to buy them a violent game.

Also...what has already been said...there is no sure-fire, concrete proof that playing a violent game will immediately turn a kid into a blood-thirsty monster.

So please, Mr. Baca...go do your job and figure out how California can avert a complete financial meltdown. Quit screwing with my hobby.

I would like to introduce the "Politicians Health Labeling Act of 2009", as the scientific data shows, politicians are the major cause of cancer and coronary disease everywhere in the world.

If this bill would come to pass, every politician would have a tatoo on his or her's forehead saying: "WARNING: Excessive douchebaggery and overall lying has been linked to world's hunger, wars and scarcity of resources in the name of profit margins."

I think this is just to stop people from using it as an excuse. You said kids are learning, and you're right - they've learned that it's an acceptable practice to blame games for their misconduct. This way, however, they don't have any excuse to beat up Mrs Miggins of 22 Fairview Gardens other than "because she was asking for it".

I don't agree that this is the way it should be, because... well, it's bollocks. But you have to roll with the punches, I guess.

Wait, wait, I thought all of this evil video game legislation was going away when we elected Obama. We where promised sunshine and kittens if he was put in the white house. I can't believe a whole political party lied to me to get elected. Then again it's also entirely possible that silly shit like this will continue, no matter which party has the power.

This is putting video games on the same level as tobacco and alcohol. Those products have warnings that also do absolutely nothing to stop their use. the warning they should use is "Video games may lead to obesity and lack of friends" which of course is wrong too, but is also a common stereotype.

Why aren't violent movies being targeted too? I usually feel more like re-creating awesome movie scenes after i watch them then I do re-creating what I did in the game. (this is because in the game I myself performed the awesomeness, in a movie I have to be jealous of others doing awesomeness, Although 99% of the time violent movies push me toward playing one of my violent games. the other 1% i perform karate moves like a retard around my house and no one is harmed.

@John B, I was being sarcastic. Although I do seem to recall some people saying that if we got Bush and the religious right out of the white house things like this would go away. We shouldn't kid ourselves into thinking that. Any politician that want's to stay in office will use any means necessary to do so. The Democrats will jump on the anti game band wagon just as much as the Republican's if it keeps their supporter's happy.

The game politics thing will be solved by time. We just need more gamers in office. Hopefully, nothing gets massively banned before that time comes.

I hate this issue with video game violence, i mean, i have been playing videogames since i was 8! Ive played violent video games, Gears of war,GTA,Ninja Gaiden, etc etc... and im not violent i don't go out and murder people I don't go up to people and punch them in the face! Its called a VIDEOGAME for a reason! Its simply just a GAME! Politicians always seem to blame videogames for everything! They never blame Tv,Music,Movies, Only videogames. Why I have no idea maybe because there all old cranky people, who are scared of VIDEOGAMES! OH NO RUN AWAY!!!! Well I dunno why.

Neglecting our health and wellness can eventually come up with serious consequences. A lot of research has been done on this matter. We have promising backgrounds. Best thing to do is keep your life balanced. Proper rest, diets, insuring the necessary amount of vitamins, proteins, having nymphomax, these are the premises to a healthy life.
