In one of the latest Iwata Asks features that Nintendo hosts, Nintendo top dog Satoru Iwata himself reveals a little secret about photo-safari Nintendo 64 game Pokemon Snap: It originally didn't have any Pokemon in it.Â
It turns out that the game was originally just a photography title, but with no specific thing to photograph, it didn't really have a point.
Iwata: "Originally, Pokemon Snap for the Nintendo 64 system wasn't a Pokemon game, but rather a normal game in which you took photos, but the motivation for playing the game wasn't clear. We wondered what players would enjoy taking pictures of, and later on we made a somewhat forced switch to taking pictures of Pokemon."
Forced? Did Blastoise twist your arm. Threaten an enema?Â
Still, I'm glad it worked out. I still play that game sometimes. A good friend recently gifted me a copy for the Wii Virtual Console. I haven't used this version's Wii Message Board picture posting feature yet.

OH <em>SNAP</em>, IT DIDN'T HAVE THE POKEMANS!?</p>
<p>
</p>
<p>
Sorry, felt the urge to pun.</p>
Pokemon Snap was responsible of teaching me basics on good photo shooting, and it was fun! I should look for this game on Bookmans or somewhere, it should be cheap.</p>
POKEMON SNAP IS THE GREATEST GAME EVER CREATED. YOU CAN THROW APPLES TO PIKACHUS AND SHIT!</p>
I suddenly really want to play this game again. I loved it, and was always hoping for a sequel with more Pokémon in it.</p>
I love this game. I always thought it would be awesome to have a sequel for Wii. Since Pokemon Snap is more or less an on-rails shooter, the pointer controller would be perfect. Also, there are more than 500 Pokemon now, and the Wii's graphics are good enough that they could make some really great looking environments with lots of Pokemon crawling around. Am I the only one who thinks this would be amazing?</p>
They need to make a sequel.</p>
<p>
So long as they could do some kinda tie-in promotion with Blockbuster Video... where they'd have a kiosk I could bring my game to and print out stickers of my favorite photos.</p>
<p>
I'd be down for some of that.</p>
I don't think I could live in a world where Pokemon Snap was just Snap. </p>
This was such a crappy game. I still remember when I got it back in the summer of 1999. My mom said to me, "This game needs to last you the rest of the summer. Don't go beating it too quickly."</p>
<p>
I finished the game that same afternoon. Even with a second playthrough, I still finished it the next day 100%. Ugh.</p>
The one and only good thing to come of this game, was that FUCKING HILARIOUS HAWP episode.</p>
<p>
i still show people that episode now.</p>
<p>
Too funny.</p>
I always really liked this game. Haven't played it in years...I wonder if I'd be better at it now than I used to be?</p>
