Pokémon DS pre-orders over half a million photo

Hey, did anybody else think that the whole Pokémon obsession would've died off by now? Well, uh-- I guess not. Despite running at full tilt for over ten years as one of gaming's biggest merch-spawning cash-o-demons, Pokémon is still at the heart of gotta catch 'em all compulsive disorders for gamers around the world, the US being no exception. Nintendo revealed today that nationwide pre-orders for Pokémon Diamond and Pearl for the DS have topped out at over 533,000.

The report also notes that these numbers are more than twice what was raked in by the last two Pokémon titles, LeafGreen and FireRed, which ended up selling over 3.4 million units in North America alone. With the DS and DS Lites having sold almost 37 million units worldwide, Nintendo's got a pretty massive install base to hook on oddball monster-catchin'. That is, potentially, a whole lot of pokemans.

With numbers like these, perhaps it's not too early to suggest that these latest titles in the series might be the best-selling games of 2007. Expect the gates of hell to spill open once Pokémon Diamond and Pearl land next week.

I'm looking forward to the day when Nintendo finally runs out of ideas, pulls a Mega Man, and just starts coming up with weird, nonsensical stuff for new Pokemon.

"I choose you...HamSandwichmon!"
"Come forth...Plasticlawnchairowth!"

And it'll still Print Money.

I doubt they'll be the top selling games, not because they won't sell a ridiculous amount of copies, but for two reasons:

a) The games will be listed separately, not together, thus splitting the marketplace.

b) Some shit game like Cars will somehow launch up to the top of the list.

Bring me my Pokemon MMO for I need to pwn 8 year olds online...

To be honest I dont find the figure that surprising, I've imported 5 copies for people, and another friend of mine has imported a further five. Yet still more people want copies off us... its the DS fever I tell you.

I really liked the Pokemon games, or at least the main line of games. Yes, they are directed at a younger audience, but they're well made games that can be fun for anyone that puts the time in to play them. Just need to ignore everything else that went with the franchise and you're fine.

I'm going to get this one. Annoys me to hell that they have barely touched the battle system. Back in the days of gameboy colour pokemon was friggin amazing with the giving limitations of the system. Now with the DS they have no excuse.

Keep the core system if you insist but at least make it a more fast paced and balanced.

It is funny because I have not played pokemon since red & blue version came out, but for some reason I really want this damn game. I didn't even know it was coming out until a month ago.

Let me guess, the new Pokemon DS game will be exactly the same as every previous version to appear on the GBA. A crappy RPG with one tedious turn based battle after another.
