Point, shoot: Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles heads to Wii photo

It looks like Capcom's Resident Evil surprise for Wii fans is out of the bag.

The latest issue of Famitsu has revealed the upcoming Wii title Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles. The game is being handled by Umbrella Chronicles developer Cavia, and looks to be a sequel to 2007's on-rails shooter. The game will take place in Resident Evil 2's Racoon City setting, and and will have players controlling  Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy.

With the publisher set to officially make some sort of announcement in North America on Thursday evening, we should know more soon.

WHY!!!!

Why God. They had a chance to do a RE2 Remake, Code Veronica, or perhaps a new game altogether. Saturate the Rails market why don't ya Capcom!?

@Magnalon: Because the first one likely sold well enough that they didn't want to put anymore effort into making something different knowing the same people would buy the same game with different graphics again.

I'm excited. RE: UC was a great game, and had so much content and optional stuff that it hardly felt like a traditional rail shooter. Hopefully it'll be more than just RE2 represented though; I'd love to see them go through Code Veronica and maybe even some of the older rail shooter titles.

The rail shooter market for Wii might be "saturated" but a quality title like UC still stands out from the pack. I mean, JRPG's are ap retty saturated market but that didn't make Persona 4 any less outstanding.

It was a rhetorical question :D

Capcom laziness point and case - Dead Rising Chop 'till you drop.

Another light-gun on rails shooter? Yay? o.O

I mean, Umbrella Chronicles wasn't bad, but, well...it's not called Capcom Sequel Stagnation for nothing...

* On-rails is a cheap job. The problem with Wii is that U$50 price don´t translate a good value in comparation with a good PS3/360 US$60 game.

I like "Umbrella Chronicles" and I'm a little attracted to this game, but now I understand why CAPCOM didn't include the RE2 chapter in UC.

Isnt this what House of the Dead was made for? Not Resident Evil?

But hey! Look at it this way, we might FINALLY have a Resident Evil game where you can move AND shoot! .... Maybe

I like how people are already dumping on this game when we don't even have the faitest clue what kind of content could be in there. I also like how people are insinuating that this is going to be a cheap knockoff game when the original UC wasn't, and that these same people were expecintg a remake of RE, which would have actually been -lazier-.

It's a testament to today's gamer that Capcom don't feel comfortable releasing a remake of a genuine classic with it's a original gameplay because it would be criticised because the controls would be sloppy and it's not all guns blazing.

Modern Gamers... Be Ashamed!

In other words:

Capcom to fans: No you are not getting Resident Evil 5 on the Wii. But we still want your money nonetheless.

Its like charge of the light gun games, on Wii now.

Oh dear, Capcom. What a missed chance to really give Wii owners something cool. I don't have a Wii, yet, but this really makes me weep.

Think I might have to use my Capcom Unity account today.

Like I said elsewhere, next time Capcom, give the RE license to Valve.

Its very possible that while Capcom are hard at work, they might not have the man power to focus on a Wii RE title. We still have Dead Rising 2, Monster Hunter 3, Lost Planet 2 to come out yet.

Hm. I would have definitely preferred a classic survival horror Wiimake of RE2, but I guess this is pretty good, although super predictable.

Everybody should have seen this coming when the RE2 scenario was excluded from Umbrella Chronicles.

I liked Umbrella Chronicles, so as long as they don't stray too far away from that, this will do just fine.

Hrm...

I already have RE: Umbrella Chronicles. And the only main entry of the RE series I own is RE4 for the Wii. I'm not sure about this.

So, as someone who hasn't played Umbrella Chronicles but is familiar with the content, does anyone know exactly why there were no RE2 levels in that game, necessitating this retooling of it in a separate package?

Oh, fuck you Capcom. You better now allow this to be another god damned on-rail shooter.

Look, I enjoyed Umbrella Chronicles, I really did. I generally like on-rail shooters too, but I just get tired of them blowing great chances with games by turning them into on-rail shooter. A good example of this is Dead Space. It would have been amazing to play a Dead Space like the other versions, only with Wiimote aiming done similar to RE4 Wii Edition. But, no, they have to ruin that and turn it into just another on-rail shooter.

They better not do that with this game, and I'd much rather it be a remake of RE2 with the controls of RE4 Wii Edition. That would be far better.

Okay, it's official. Wii has moved on from it's 'mini-game' phase and after a short time in limbo has landed firmly in it's 'rail shooter' phase. Either are okay when done well but we are approaching a saturation point and, while I do love rail shooters, I'm ready for something different (which is ironically something a bit more console traditional). Looking forward to the looming 2d sidescroller phase myself.

Might be good, I enjoy(ed) Umbrella Chronicles. But does this mean that hopes for a remake of Resident Evil 2 like the gamecube remake of the original are out the window? :(

@Magnalon

Saturate the rails market? There are like 3 on-rails games on the Wii. At least it's not a RE minigame compilation.

I'm exited for this. I loved Umbrella Chronicles, so another game with backstory will be fine by me. I have RE2 on the GameCube, so I don't really need a remake, although one with RE4-type gameplay would be fun eventually.

@ monodi, I dont think so but surprisingly enough there is Time Crisis for PS3.

Ohh wow, and here I'm sure many of us were thinking RE5 was gonna be out on wii. Well that might still be a possibility, but I guess some folks will have to wait a bit longer.

@pedrovay2003

I should have said "the market will be saturated", however, I never said it was at the present moment. With Dead Space on the way, it seems to be reaching that trend (instead of remaking or porting, just "rail shooter it!")

"On Rails" is where I lose interest. I mean...you move me through the level and all I do is point and shoot? How base is that! Effort? What's that?
