Quantum of Solace sucked.

Tonight: Jim, Aaron, Topher and I talk about porn games. I fully understand the tendency to only ask BonerQuestions, but I implore you -- last time we had so many BonerQuestions and so few NotBonerQuestions that we had to cut the listener questions short. If you do have a BonerQuestion to ask (and I am sure you do), please ask it along with a regular, boner-unrelated question.

We'll be talking about some other stuff, too, but none of it as interesting as the porn games stuff.

Anyway, give us your comments, questions, Siegelpuntz, and so on.

With the economy being the way it is (welcome to the party, Jim :P), do you think the games industry is still a so-called "recession proof" industry?

Why do people hate on the idealization of the human form in games?

People have always idealized the human body in sculpture, paintings, comic books, etc, and they have for a reason. Do we really want to look at "realistic looking" people in our games?

I don't.

Do you ever think that a XXX game could make it in the industry? As we've seen games like BMX XXX crash and burn, if a studio such as Bungie or Valve made a porn-like game, do you think the majority of gamers would embrace it? Or, would people dismiss it as filth, no matter how good it is?

Also, have you guys ever played a sex-related game that was actually fun?

Do you think it would even be viable to have porn games on consoles anyway, it seems the main purpose of a PORN game would require at least one free hand, a controller would just be clunky and get in the way.

Is there a way to make a porn game with the emotional depth of, say, Metal Gear Solid (4)? I want to cry when I fap, not after.

BonerQuestion:

Will BonerQuest feature a "Thrust Meter (or Meater)" similar to the Limit Breaks in Final Fantasy games? This would, of course, lead to gorier, more powerful bonerrific attacks.

Normal Question:

Do you think that since so many retailers are unable or unwilling to stock "AO" titles that they will have to resort to a service like Steam to get their wares to the public?

Der Seigelpun:

LindeProduction's BonerQuest is sure to arouse your interest!

I didn't think QoS was that bad. I mean it pissed me off that some of the humor was crossing into the corny era of James Bond. That and I had no idea what the hell was going on throughout the movie. I just know that it had a couple of hot chicks and lots of explosions and fighting.

The way the video game industry is structured when compared to the other big entertainment industries makes the internet the obvious home for porn games. But do you ever see the porn industry making a real push to create an acceptable adult market on the consoles? Or will the proprietary nature of systems, with their rigorous certification and QA processes keep porn off consoles indefinitely? I mean, Nintendo is never going to certify porn, right? Even though the Japanese culture is inundated with the stuff?

And if we do get a porn market on consoles wouldn't that take the focus off things like the ridiculously tame sex scene in Mass Effect, making legitimate games less of target for the MSM?

How impressed are you guys by the Street Fighter HD Remix? Not only is it beautiful to look at, but the game is relatively lag-free online. I've never had so much fun playing another game with my fellow Dtoiders.

Do you think adults-only games will actually help or hurt the games industry in terms of being accepted as a "legitimate" form of entertainment? A lot of people out there still see videogames as something meant only for kids, and when you introduce porn into the equation, you can only imagine the reactions of those ignorant of the situation.

I loved QoS! First Bond movie I went more interested in seeing how he was going to react, carry himself, and what kind of decisions he would make rather than for the the whole "evil genius" bullshit roundabout people expect.

Bond constantly throwing himself and everyone around him into danger is a result of Vesper's betrayal and suicide. With each person he sacrifices, the greater the weight on his shoulders. Has he now grown into the Bond that previous actor's have portrayed? I wouldn't say so, and I look forward to the next move that much more.

Do you believe story-telling in gaming is dying, relative to the need for fast paced motion and heavier interaction?

Why do current adult-themed games take so damn long to get to the good parts? If anybody wants to make a successful adult game, they need to take a page from the adult film industry's book: less than a minute of setup, twenty-five minutes of effing.

Asking a BonerQuestion now seems redundant.

I loves my porn, and if I want to see hot chicks gorfing down on some salami, then I'll watch a vid on the internet. But porn games are inherently anti-climactic imo and I don't give a crap about them, but I do care about AO titles in general. I want to be able to have access to serious shit if I want it, without having to import to N.A.

Any word on distributors who aren't pussies like Bestbuy or Gamestop(EB Games in Canada)?

With all the talk about 'innovation' recently, are you guys prepared to sacrifice some quality in order to achieve that innovation? For example, Mirror's Edge is badly flawed but has some interesting ideas, whereas Gears 2 is pretty faithful to a template but super polished. I personally think that innovation can't come at the expense of quality, but I'd love to hear what you guys think.

Also, Quantum of Solace was neither good nor bad, just 'meh'.

The introduction to Casion Royale is one of the best bond openings. Hell casion royale is one of the best bond movies.

Is there really a need for porn in games? Is there any place in the gaming pantheon where visual depictions of sex added anything of value to the over experience?

Don't get me wrong, I think theres a place in games for certain "adult only" actions (drinking, drugging, sexual suggestion, ULTRA VIOLENCE, etc), because they can add value to a plot or situation, or just be fun in a campy, tongue-in-cheek way; But has there ever been a situation in gaming where depictions of hardcore sex acts have been anything else than a masturbatory aid?

Simple PornQuestion: why do all pr0n-games suck (in the not hot sense)? As far as I have witnessed they're really all very bad in almost every sense. But why? You'd think with a theme like sex a smart developer would be able to create a compelling game.

[b]Bonerupdate[b]

The playable test version of Bonerquest got passed around last week. A lot of feedback from it was positive. I was trying to see which areas were overly populated with enemies and which areas were designed to get players where I wanted them.Everyone seemed to respond how I wanted and I couldn't be more pleased with it.

So now a non-Bonerquestion that is somewhat related: Was it wrong of me to let non gaming press play the game? It isn't nearly finished yet, but enough is there for a person to do a good write up about it. Do any of you guys want to try out that test version? I'll try to have something ready for everyone to play soon enough.

How does Arron Linde feel knowing that Bonerquest is coming? And that it couldn't be farther from what he originally imagined.

Do you want a game or porno?

Stuff like the Guy Game suck because the game isn't fun. And BMX XXX is just a re-skin with naked women (boooring).

When many people use porn, it's to wank and be done with it.

My feeling is that a good mature game has adult themes that don't seem forced into the game, unless the game is just about f*cking. See Sex Games.

Fav oldie sex games c64:
Sexacuda - Pacman ripoff, the protagonist has a wiggling tounge and eats d*icks instead of dots.

Sex Games - its about screwing in different positions (see above).

Strip Poker Series - I always hated when the cpu would wager their "skin" when I took all their clothes!

What would a porn game be like if it would elicit psychological emotions, and not just physical reactions to naked people? Like how softporn can be sensual and hardporn is just about fucking.

But softporn is also boring. So how would you differentiate the two in a game and still make it function as digital entertainment that keeps the player engaged and wanting to play hours on end? Or would that just defeat the purpose of a porn game?

As someone who used to obtain copies of the games featured in SomethingAwful.com's Hentai game reviews, this show topic amuses me. Partly because the inevitable flood of Boner Questions, and partly because of how terrible those games actually are.

Just so you know, the inside joke between me and my friends because of one of those games is that option 3 is always "Put it in!"

Anyways, the issue of "porn games" is a rather interesting one. Seeing as how the ESRB rates content, it is easy for a game with even the slightest sexual content to be elevated in the rating scale while games with gratuitous violence seem to scale a bit more slowly past the "T" rating. A good example of this is Indigo Prophecy/ Fahrenheit. The game was censored in the states due to the sexual content in only a handful of the scenes. While I am not an expert on media analysis, I just can't get around how different the game rating system is from the system used for as long as I can remember (and then some) for rating movies.

So I guess my question is this: If gaming is to evolve in the eyes of the general public as an art form we all know it can be, do we have to pressure the ESRB to be more relaxed in their ratings and fall more inline with the MPAA's rating system? Or do we continue to buy the crap excuse that video games are more desensitizing than movies due to the element of interactivity?

If we use the case of pornography as an example, that excuse can be blown out of the water. As my Marine friend is often want to inform me, you can very well "interact" with a pornographic video as well as you could a pornographic video game.

One last thing, will Jim Sterling be the reviewer for Boner Quest?

Winter Gaming!

So here in St.Paul, Minnesota snow has already fallen, and I've been suffering from acute nostalgic itching (clinically diagnosed). Personally, winter usually means I'll be replaying a Zelda game or tackling unbeaten games like Kid Icarus or CastleVania III

What winter games do you folks find yourselves picking up to keep the blood flowing through your frost-bitten fingers?*

Games have already made us feel emotions, and some (like Saints Row 2) have presented control schemes for sexual delicacy that go beyond pounding a button to a rhythm.

Do you think there's a place in the gaming near future for a game to deal with explicit, emotional sexual interaction? Could a game dealing with sexual emotion have a place in the gaming landscape, let alone actually be effective?

Recently Adam Sessler made a point of giving thanks for all the talent in the industry and it got me thinking. Is our culture ingrateful for people who get bachelors degrees in art before they're allowed to make so much as a crate with nails sticking out of it, coders who know enough unspoken languages to make a latin professor blush in humility and designers who are able to wrap art perfectly around the numbers to give us a memorable experience without letting us realise that all we're doing is moving around a pile of vertecies with a serise of equations? Even the shittiest of games contain alot of quality work but we're faster to cut them down than we are, say, movies in which a killer VHS tape is regarded as the highest form of art horror can achieve.

Seriously, Silent Hill or a fucking KILLER VHS TAPE?
