Podtoid tonight, guest starring Brad Nicholson's pecs

12:20 PM on 01.12.2009, Anthony Burch 49 comments

     PODTOID

I've been rewatching all the Broken Pixels episodes in memoriam of the 1up network. The Total Recall episode is the "Manos": The Hands of Fate of Broken Pixels.

On tonight's Podtoid, myself, Jim Sterling, Aaron Linde, Topher Cantler, Brad Nicholson, and Brad Nicholson's guns will be talking about the death of the 1UP network, Nintendo's patent of a "let the game play for you" design idea, Bob's Game, and RPG hybridization in action games.

Until, of course, Brad decides to flex his pecs and crush all our heads between their sweaty, highly toned majesty.

As always, we need listener questions, and you are the listeners. Best question nets you a Dtoid swag bag, so ask away.

About Bob,

The guy put himself into the game as a boss, and had a very ideallic approach to getting his game completed. When it didn't work he freaked out.

It looks to me like Bob experienced his Quarter Life Crisis at the end of his game creation cycle, as opposed to when he left college.

It seems that the guy not only crashed hard, but also just went through it publicly. Does he garner any sympathy from you, or is this guy just ripe for lulz for going insane, regardless of how he got there.

Crayon Physics Deluxe. You guys hit that yet? If so, how was the hitting?

Also, do you think a Dtoid soap opera would garner an audience?

Also, also, with the recent introduction of 3D in games at CES, where do you see games changing in the future outside of graphical improvement? What will be done outside of the box, literally(said like Jim) speaking.

What do you think is gonna be "Michael Jackson" and just ruin everything in the worst way possible?

Also to have the best abs of any gamer around. What can Brad recommend?

Do you think Nintendo is right in their refusal to give Bob the SDK? I'm not one to give in to whiney protest and think he's gone about this the complete wrong way, but if Nintendo will let games about Imagining various animals with Z's at the end to flood their systems and godawful tripe like "Elf bowling", shouldn't they be a little more open to the indie dev?

Or do you think they are very open to the idea and there's a story we're not hearing from bob? He doesn't seem like a stable fellow to begin with, I'm sure he's done something to scare Nintendo off...

With Nintendo's new patent, the growing presence of games being downloadable, and the basic upheaval of in-person multiplayer events by online gaming, do you guys (and guns) think that gamers are being made lazier? Are we sacrificing any actual intellectual and social aspects of gaming for the sake of convenience? I can't see future generations of gamers hanging out at Funcoland, walking across town to each other's houses to play Halo, or even actually having a decent challenge within the games they're playing.

Destructoid's choice for Game of the Year was Left 4 Dead. How do you think your choice reflects on 2008 as a whole? Specifically, how does Left 4 Dead's aspiration of "being fun" compare to the likes of MGS4 and Braid, which attempted the decidedly more ambitious task of being "more than a game"?

My basic questions is simple.

Was EGM going to die eventually due to the speed and efficiency of blog-esque news sites, and how do you think journalism itself will change in 2009?
perri's Avatar

So, I still haven't deduced whether or not you guys entertain questions that have to do with the topics but I'll try to hit everything.

Is Nintendo's patent, if used, really changing the game all that much? Essentially they are giving you gamefaqs in game(don't have to use it), of course you won't be having that experience at all this way. Where would this even be necessary? When successfully implemented into Aaron Linde's BonerQuest would this work as an expression of one man's sexual inadequacies, seeing as he can't even play as a man with an erection? Would it be one step closer to creating an actual pornographic game?(watching not acting.). Will Brad Nicholson be a rival in the sequel; Aaron Linde's BonerQuest: Boner v. Brawn TM ? In the Wii version will you get to sword fight against Brad Nicholson? Just looking for comment on the rumour.

Lastly, What happened with the Faith thing? Jim can probably take this one alone but I wouldn't mind hearing what the rest of the crew has to say about it. Personally I missed the whole thing and would greatly appreciate a concise vocal summation so that I do not have to go through the c-blogs and read them all... Thats just demanding though.

Also, Call Tiff.

do you feel that the PC's lack of dedicated joystick peripheral (ie controller) is a detriment for pc developers, stifling their ability to enter into new genres and create new experiences for the PC audience ? games like Ico, SotC, Zelda, Metal Gear Solid, etc, rely on the player's ability to use certain face button/trigger/dual analog stick combinations in order to perform many of the tasks a mouse+keyboard weren't designed to cope with.

many of the experiences we associate with console games, console developers, and especially japanese developers, are directly related to the fact that the games themselves were designed with controllers in mind. if the PC had a standardized controller, do you think it could finally start getting its own Colossus/Zelda-style titles ?

Disregarding the Destructoid style guide, the *unofficial* Game Style Guide, or what Merriam-Webster or Google has to say on the matter, do you prefer "video game" or "videogame"? Or, since that question won't make sense when read aloud, do you prefer it as one word or two?

So, the story of Bob is that a man spent five years singlehandedly crafting his masterpiece game, locked himself in a room in hopes to gain the attention of the world's largest publisher, has a moment of hubris and eventually descends into a spiral of madness...

...my question is, when are the remaining members of The Who and Pink Floyd going to unite to make a rock opera about this guy's life?

Quick question for all of you;

So I've been playing Sonic Unleashed recently (I shower after), and only after reaching the Spagonia Rooftop stage did I realise that you actually hold down the boost button to continually boost, rather than keep pressing it over and over. This means you can keep boosting so long as you collect rings for ridiculous speed, which clearly made the game a hell of a lot more fun than it actually had been till that point.

So my question is, have you ever played a game where you have completely misunderstood a game mechanic, and that discovery then alters your opinion of the game? For example, not realising that you can swap weapons in the original Contra etc.

Also; Call Tiff.

What does the future of Destructoid hold? We already have an impressive blog and several podcasts, but where can we go from there? To me it seems that there is pretty much only paper and video. Could either of these be viable options?

My prime example would be "The Onion", where they publish a weekly paper containing several of the articles throughout the week as well as some exclusive stuff, whilst their website has things that paper cannot provide (Video, special articles, etc.) Could destructoid do something like that? Say, available for free or for a subscription at a local EB games or Gamestop, and increase our audience exponentially that way. Have some things exclusive to the site, as well as some things exclusive to the paper, and we'd all come running for those.

I'm a student of Mass Communications, so this is quite an interesting topic for me. I can has opinion? Want to hire a new marketing guy, say...me?

My little question is Endings, what the hell happened to them. Remember when they were actually fulfilling and FINAL. Now in a sea of games where the story either doesn't have a good one (Eternal Sonata) or cliffhanger it (just about every game in today's popular spectrum) or are completely retarded (new prince of Persia I'm looking at you) What games gave that you that satisfied feeling in your hearts? I think for me it was MGS 4 what about it?

The attention the online gaming media paid to Bob's Game was originally positive, until he went crazy or started this viral marketing campaign or whatever it is he's doing now. Why?

He made a website with a bunch of outrageous claims about this game he supposedly made, but he gives us more information about the number of hours he worked on it than what the game is actually like. When pressed to show us content, he shows us videos of an uninteresting adventure game in a generic GBA RPG engine. Why did anyone EVER take him seriously?
