Quantcast

erer

Last week, I asked you guys not to submit "year in review"-esque questions for the weekly $25 listener contest. I hope you saved them, because this week's episode will be almost entirely devoted to summarizing, praising, and whining about 2007 at large.

Episode 38 -- which will, I assume, include some horrendously insensitive stroke jokes aimed at Dick Clark -- will feature Aaron Linde, Jim Sterling, and Tiff "Don't Call Me Tiffany" Chow. Was 2007 truly the best year ever for gaming? What were its highs and lows? What's to look forward to in 2008? Our devoted cast will pretend to know the answers to these questions while simultaneously eating and/or playing unrelated videogames.

Anyway, hit the jump and ask some damn questions. Whoever asks the best one will win 25 bucks.

Oh, also: Podtoid now records on Wednesday, and hits the site on Thursday. Mark your e-calendars.

2007 I think..
Was early "nex-gen"
Current gen if you want.

But, 2008 will be better.

What was the worst game of 2007?

Jim, what was the most overrated game of 2007?

In 2008 we can look forward to the same kind of refined game development on the ps3 and Wii that we saw on the 360 in 2007. We can look forward to less games ported and more games developed strictly for nowgen. We can look forward to a slowing down of minigame packages for the Wii and hopefully some indy development (which could really shine on the Wii).

And most importantly... we can look forward to GTA 4....

I already picked up my 1000 shares of TTWO... did you?

Why is Jim a Pillock?

Also, do you think the games released during 2007 show "this generation" to it's fullest potential, or do you think the best is yet to come?

Pip pip cheerio, govnuh!

My question is this:
What was the best RPG of the year for each of you? Mine would be Persona 3.

It's 2008 now, so "do you think Destructoid will be able to get some sort of online competitive gaming night or maybe even a part of the site devoted to said night?"

Friday Night Fights revival! Please.

I'd say it was a good year in gaming...but I think it can get better. None of the current gen systems have had time to hit their stride fully and indie developers are still on the rise.

My question is thus...

Do you think this upcoming year will be known more for:

a) the power of all the consoles finally being shown well in polished, though perhaps unoriginal, games

b) surprise hits that might utilize original gameplay and premise more than graphics

c) Starcraft 2 (one can hope...)

d) other (explain)

Thanks guys! Keep up the awesomenessing.

I think Destructoid have already made it quite clear they don't care who pays the bills.

Don't you think Tony Bennett looks like a more handsome Jack Thompson?

I want you all to talk about music in games. I want to hear shower curtains mentioned in this podcast at least once.

The Orange Box, while full of the best games of the year, is not actually a game in and of itself. Discuss.

Or go with this: I know that some lament the current state of gaming and long for the days of retro games, but I'm actually excited about the current state and the future of games. While there are tons of shit games and shoddy design practices out there, I can't help but look at games like Mass Effect (shut up, Jim), BioShock, Portal, the Half-Life series, Mario Galaxy, etc. and feel that the near future (at least) is very bright and promising. Any thoughts? What are you looking forward to?

Having just played Pac-Man: Championship Edition, I thought of many other games I would to see get a similar facelift and be released for XBLA. Some of the games I would love to see on XBLA include: Lode Runner, Pitfall, Marble Madness, Arkanoid, and Space Invaders. Hopefully the original creators could come back for each game just like Iwatani-san did with [i]Pac-Man: Championship Edition[i].

So, my question is what other games could benefit from a XBLA iteration? Would there be any games specifically that you would like to see re-done (assuming the original creator(s) can come back)?

I understand that Nex probably isn't free to be on the podcast anymore, but can you have him pick the music? Three or four times during his bloody reign I had to track down a song I'd never heard of after hearing it on the podcast. No offense intended to the Doctor Who theme, but it doesn't have that pleasant surprise effect.

Its easy to look back at the year and reminisce about all the awesome games of the year 2007. But what are the stupidest stories of 2007 things that shouldn't have been said or done the sort of things that make us think what were they thinking?

Also it might be interesting if there are any particularly memorable post or comments of the year?

Cosades:
Sadly, I have essentially zero taste in music, and I assume Nex is far too busy to add some (and I'm far too egotistical to allow him). The intro/outro themes will probably just consist of whatever I happen to be listening to at that particular moment in relevance to the show's content.

Are you guys at all worried about the XBOX Live hackings, and why is no one talking about it? It seems like the first time this was brought up it was buried away. It feels as if it's happening again.

I just feels something that should be made a bigger bitch about than something like the Gurstmann rumors.

Might I suggest Queens of the Stone Age's "Turnin' On The Screw"? I should totally be your soundtrack man. I'm an indie fuck, just like Nex. I'll even suck up to you all the time and never disagree with you.

My question is this, the industry in general, has shot it load off in november/december with some great games. Is there really that much on the cards to equal 2007 AMAZING year of games, will the current-gen games truly achieve the greatness that has been promised since day one. Also why has no one bought uncharted: drake's fortune, its amazing!

Do you see a port of Mass Effect for the PC?

I think the most important question about an upcoming game in 2008 is easily... will we see Mother 3 finally released in some format, legal or otherwise? Will any other game be relevant when and if this happens?

More seriously though, do you think we will hear anything more official about the NEXT consoles, handheld or otherwise? I would actually hope to hell we DON'T, I'd like things to stay stable for a few more years.

With games like Ghostbusters and The Bourne Conspiracy coming out this year (Ghostbusters might be a stretch), do you think there is hope for the movie-to-game genre we tend to shit all over, or moreso do you think it will spark more of these games from credible studios known for making solid games?

Well not that kind of stroke, but it would make a good Wii game. So would dick clark's speech hero where you have to hit the buttons to enunciate words. (Spoiler warning: you always lose)

In recent years, we've seen more and more console revisions, to the point of beating a dead horse. The PS3 has had two new SKUs not even a year after its initial release. Why are consoles becoming purposely outdated after only a short time? Are consoles becoming the new PC, needing upgrades every year? And will this ultimately hurt the games market?
