Also: Why do you think games like Ocharina of Time and FFVII(one of my favorite games) get so much backlash these days?

After having played/beat Portal for the first time yesterday, I was floored by amount of compelling world building it accomplished in such a short time span. It got me to wondering how a 2 hour game can draw me in better than say a 15 hour shooter campaign.
What do you guys think it takes for a game to build a convincing/engrossing world? Why do so many games fail in this aspect?

i am undecided on which version of arkham city i should buy. If you guys owned both consoles and a high end pc, which version would you buy? I know that the pc version just got pushed back, but there are so many good games coming out this fall that there will be plenty of other games to play, so wait time isnt a factor.
