Podtoid 98 is tonight, do your thing photo

I want it.

It's only two weeks until Podtoid's 100th episode, which means...well, absolutely nothing, now that I think about it. Tonight's episode will be pretty much like any other -- we'll talk about console-specific DLC, LEGO Rock Band, and gaming as a "recession-proof" industry.

And, as always, your listener questions.

Hit the jump, watch the video, and ask us stuff. If you ask the best question, you'll get a Dtoid swag bag. Typical situation.

I saw something that caught my eye at Target to today, and it was "Sims 3: An Introduction" for sale for $1.

The box looked exactly like the Sims 3 box (including the back), and the only clues as to what was actually included were a bit of tiny letters saying that it had some developer interviews/game footage and a song download for Sims 3. Oh, and a $5 off coupon.

What do you think of this? Is this a neat new way to get stuff like interviews, a coupon, and hype of a game out to the common public? Or is this a really cheap way to get a quick buck and a shady marketing tactic (seeing as the box for the box it comes in on the shelf looks almost identical to the actual game and it costs a dollar)?

Why isn't there more Patton in the Rock Band games? Are they afraid?

Fallout New Vegas and Bioshock 2 has got me a' wondering... What are some of the best (and worst) sequels(I know New Vegas isn't a direct sequel but it is the same lore and game engine) that changed hands from the originals?
Personally I think Obsidian has done a good job of this, but they also break most ties to the original by setting it X years latter so that it doesn't matter to much. C&C Generals stands out as a particularly bad example... EA has more then made up for it though. RA3 and Tib Wars are excellent games.

How important do you feel as a podcast, and as people lucky enough to be in the business that you are (kicking ass)?

Is it good to know one's place?

Hm..

Will the swine influenza affect the development of Aaron Linde's Bonerquest?

Pishaw. If anything, Bonerquest is the cause of Swineflu. Why else is Mr. Obama so incredibly involved with this crisis?

He wants to cameo.

With the news of a MrT game, do you think Chuck Norris or bonerquest should be worried of losing their Internet fame?

Will EA ever make a good SSX again?! SSX 3 was one of the best games of all time with the soundtrack (techno-esque) and gameplay. Ever since it has been a load of crap in my opinion. If EA does not make another do you think they will sell it to a company who will?

Question:

I recently purchased Bioshock since Bioshoch 2 is in the works, and mainly because it's cheaper now and I'm on a budget when it comes to video games (Samit understands how it is).

I haven't finished the game yet for two reasons. One, because it's the month of final exams, but the other reason is because of its gameplay.

Let me compare this to Prey to better explain since they have similar aspects. Prey has a unique setting/theme, just as Bioshock does. Prey had a pretty cool plot, some-what similar to how Bioshock has a cool story. Prey has unique guns and soul walking, Bioshock has plasmids. Prey has portals and gravity puzzles to pace the game, Bioshock has hacking and leveling up.

With all these cool aspects, here's what breaks the gameplay of both of them which lead to me taking so long to beat Prey and what has delayed me from beating Bioshock so far. Zero punishment in both of them. In both games, at death the player respawns without consequence. In Prey you have to do a 30 second minigame to regain health and power, and in Bioshock you end up maybe a few hallways back, but where is the fun? What is the point in even participating in the experience when I know in my head that all I have to do is keep bum rushing and I will eventually get what I want or to where I want to go?

So my question is, does a cool story and theme excuse huge gameplay flaws such as this? When I want to play a game, I want to have fun, shouldn't a game be fun before it becomes interesting?

So there's a Mr. T game coming out and all I need to know is: is this the mainstream art game we've been waiting for? Is this the point in history at which videogames attain ultimate supremacy as a medium or is this a quick-passing joke destined for the bargain bin?

After listening to Aaron Linde and Rev. Anthony for a year, I've decided to get into PC gaming. What would you guys consider essential playing material (aside from half life, braid and Team fortress 2) for a guy who has only played starcraft at his friends house?

Also I found out that NObu Noby Boy is getting a patch called "Fart boy"

I don't know whether to laugh or be horrified.

What deaths in videogames have made an impression on you, whether it be the henchmen or pedestrians or maybe even the final boss?

I get to listen to this on my birthday, awesome.

QUESTION!
Whatever happened to the creative glory that was Shiny and PlanetMoon Studios? Why are games rarely made these days that match the surreal caliber of games like MDK, Sacrifice and Giants: Citizen Kabuto?

As a follow up, are there any developers who you personally wish would regain the creative glory of their heyday?

Since "that-game-in-Iraq" was "too soon", are games like Halo, L4D and what not "far too soon" since they haven't happened yet?

God knows I'm looking forward to the inevitable zombie/infected apocalypse or using advanced alien firepower...

All this sequel talk has me wondering...

Why do movie sequels get shittier, whereas game sequels tend to improve?

And...

Do you ever ignore the media surrounding games you are excited about?

Since Bisontoid was such a hit any plans on other video game movies being given the podtoid treatment?

Obvious choices are the Mario Bros movie and Mortal Kombat. Not to mention Uwe Boll's epic piles of shit.

With the cancellation of Six Days in Fallujah Konami said that video games are not ready for a serious game about current events. How long do you think it will be until someone tries again to make a "serious" video game dealing with current issues, what do you think it will be about, and who do you think will back it?
