This was supposed to be the Resident Evil episode, but we spend more than half our time talking about Flower. Life is unpredictable.

Samit, Linde, Topher, special guest Nick Chester and myself recorded a podcast. You can listen to it here. Highlights include:

- Is Flower too structured, or not structured enough? Or both?

- Seriously, though, buy Flower

- The Podtoid image contest voting thread is up

- Has Resident Evil turned into a 3rd-person shooter? Is that a bad thing?

- Resident Evil 5 impressions from a guy who has played slightly more of it than you have

- For the first time ever, get a behind-the-scenes listen of our full post-recording conversation, which (fair warning) is pretty goddamn long

The best question came from Dimly. Just email your street address to reverendanthony [a t ] gmail [do t] com and we'll send you indeterminate stuff.

[The Resident Evil quotes are from this video.]

i mean no disrespect but i just don't feel a member of the staff should be considered a special guest.

Listening to it now. Y'all are still talking about Flower.

I'm a little surprised at how well everyone loved the final level of Flower. I HATED it. Maybe it's my OCD, or something, but there were about seven million flowers to bloom in that level, all of which were really fucking hard to see. I spent at least an hour alone in the first section along, swirling around trying to make sure I got every single one. It was PAINFUL.

How the hell can flower be both too structured and not structured enough? That doesn't make sense.

And yes, RE is turning into a 3rd person shooter franchise, and it's a bad thing. Not because the new games aren't better than the old ones, but because they could be so much more if they wanted to.

Have you played it? The first, middle, and last levels are vastly different in terms of linearity, which is what is being referred to. Not that the entire game as a whole is too structured-and-unstructured, but that the individual stages have very incompatible levels of linearity.

You're getting lazy in your alternative image text, Mr. Birch.

I forgot there was alt text for that one. Whoops.

In regards to the special guest thing, you've got me there. He's not Dan Paladin or anything, but I figured some boldface might get you (a little bit) interested in listening to a slightly different cast.

As far as the "Resident Evil" title discussion, one reason I feel that the title does make sense is the fact that there is a manipulating virus that is "resident" in it's host, that makes them "evil."

Podtoid always means I get some work done in the office, rather than surfing Dtoid's many avenues...

Cheers guys, I look forward to tomorrow's 9-5 shitty slog slightly more now...

Oh, it better be good.

Just finished listening to it. I actually sort of like the random "shoot-the-shit" part at the end. Maybe that should be a returning feature?

I get angry when a game series try to change or do something new in a squeal and gets trolled for it. Yes it's more of a shooter than the first one but so was RE4. If you want to play the old RE go back an play it but don't expect the game developers to not try to make there game better.

I also want to say WOOT Street Fighter IV. tomorrow/today when we get this podcast.

@Anthony:
I don't really care about linearity. The issue is that it doesn't feel like a survival horror game. For most games, that's fine, but RE is a series that started out as survival horror. They could keep all of this action, as well as the superior over the shoulder view if they wanted to. All survival horror really needs is enemies and situations that put the fear of death into your heart. RE4 didn't have that, and RE5 doesn't seem to from what was in the demo and trailers. I guess when you got to the 3rd area in RE4 and encountered the regenerators, it became survival horror for a while. But the game as a whole just felt like an action title.

Flower was good, but I found it too structured from the start. I wanted to sit back and enjoy my surroundings, but the collect-a-thon made it difficult to do so. My focus quickly shifted from "This is beautiful" to "fly over this shit, move on, fly over this shit, move on".

It was a slightly boring video game wrapped in exceptional visuals IMO. It's still certainly worth 10 bucks though.

And I was NOT a fan of the 6 axis controls at all. Maybe I just suck, but getting the wind to go where I wanted it to was a big time chore.

RE5 is fine how it is. Bitches need to recognise, that Capcom are not Epic/Valve etc, who are seasoned in FPS style run and gun game mechanics. Hell, we should be greatful we are even getting RE5, because RE3's sales were not good and could have easily finished the series.

The shake and remake of RE4 changed things that RE5 builds on, we've got to remember that while the west moves at breakneck speed, japan doesn't and tend to hold some ideas back due to lack of vision or popularity.

Its also one thing when enemies are shooting back at you, to use cover, strafe, n run n gun. When the aren't using guns and if you were, with run and gun, RE would be completed too quick and lack pacing. Remember, RE still has a story to tell, and as such shouldn't be rushed.

In time Capcom will catch up, but to be honest, the day zombies start shooting back is the day I stop playing RE.

i just think a special guest should be a community member or game developer. its not a huge gigantic problem but i just found it to be off place. and you don't even have to tell me anything about the podcast because i'm gonna listen to regardless, a few are really funny, a few are really insightful, and one outta 10 is boring. but i listen to them all. i tried to get into listening to the podcastle but found it was too "head up my ass" for my tastes.

Flower was a very interesting game. It would seem that everyone is having a different experience with it. Personally I think Flower was a good game, albeit with it's share of flaws. I can't wait for Noby Noby Boy!

Just wanted to say... that was an awesome show you guys did. Probably one of the best I've listened to in a while. Many contrasting opinions, all very well argued for and against. So many good, relevant, discussions. Nicely done.

My sympathy for Linde's predicament is growing with each episode, but what's so wrong about Siegelpuns? They ain't hurtin' nobody.

I'd also like to see a return of the "shoot the shit" segment that Dexter mentioned. The whole podcast is basically you guys shooting the shit, but this seemed more informal and relaxed. I guess you guys would be expecting it, though, which would take away half the fun.

Blindsidedork is also the loudest breather ever in that last segment.
