Quantcast

I have no idea why, but I was moved to re-watch the above video about eighty times last week, after having gone about two years without even thinking about it for a single second.

Anyway, Tiff is gone for good, but tonight Topher Cantler is around. He's from that other Destructoid podcast. Retro-something-or-other. Something about NES games.

This week's podcast will be our regular news roundup-type deal: we'll be talking about hype, suspension of disbelief, Japanese vs western game development, and a bit about Killer Instinct.

As always, hit the jump, ask a comment, and if yours induces the most interesting conversation on the air, you'll win some cool swag of your choosing. Oh, and the specifically-themed Siegel Puns from last week didn't seem to pan out quite as well as I thought they would -- mainly because "Castle Crashers" is sort of hard to pun-ify. Instead, this week, just pick a favorite game of yours and SiegelPun it. We'll read a few of our favorites on air.

Is Topher permanent (no offense Topher) or will we be seeing another person brought on for the long haul.

Maybe Ashley (Davis or Burch).

What do you all think is the primary reason hype is so excessive? Do you think it mostly because of the companies' marketing or because of websites that have a large amount of influence on their readers via seemingly biased articles and advertising?

I think Killer Instinct 3 will redefine the fighting game genre with intuitive controls, amazing visuals, and spellbinding characters. I don't care if I'm basing the fact that the game is real on sheet music or not - the fact remains that the idea of Killer Instinct 3 is enough to raise the bar.

Watch out Street Fighter, Tekken, and DOA. TJ Combo is coming back.

In light of Spore and Red Alert 3, do you think that DRM will continue to kick loyal customers in the face?

Will DRM continue on and start kicking us in the balls, or will it slow down a little and kick the bucket?

Jokes, bruv. But seriously... a question...

What would it take to make you play an MMO? Like, really play one?

Instinct tells me that the next installment of the KI series will be a true Killer!!!

Also, what are your thoughts on the new Uwe Boll movie "Seed" that is being released on DVD, with Advent Rising packaged alongside it?

Also also, is Topher gonna be Jim and Rev's new punching bag? I want at least 5 utterances of "Shut the fuck up, Topher!"

Killer Instinct 3 has the potential to either be awesome or be a HUGE dissapointment. Along with MK VS DCU and SFIV, KI 3 could rejuvenate fighting games for this generation.
If Killer Instinct 3 is real, what Rare character do you want/not want to see in it?

Bonus question: What fighting series do you want to see come back? (besides the ones that are indeed coming back)

Also, they should have a pinata from Viva Pinata as an unlockable character in the new Killer Instinct.

It seems like that in the days of the NES and SNES Japanese developers used to be really good at designing game controls, but since the industry moved to 3D it seems that Western developers have gotten much better with designing game controls than the Japanese developers.

Games like MGS prove how bad Japanese developers are with 3D game controls, while MGS 4's controls where much better, thanks to Ryan Payton, the controls where still pretty bad compared to Western developed games.

Why do you think this is?

Just wanted to say I fully endorse Topher becoming a permanent member of Podtoid.

Also would you rather KI3 be 2D or 3D? What sort of campy characters would you like to see in it? Lastly, what are some of your favorite fighting games?

And a pun: Trauma Center will leave you in STITCHES! Don't wanna play? SUTURE SELF!

With the recent news regarding Phantasy Star Zero for the DS, do you see handhelds as viable platforms for MMOs? It's a genre that's been traditionally very much PC-based, but it has enjoyed recent successes in Japan with Monster Hunter Portable and Phantasy Star Portable for the PSP. It makes sense that these time-consuming games would be more accessible in the handheld format, but do you think it will work?

One could argue that the general direction of the video game industry is guided by trends, with one genre being the dominate entry in the titles released in that cycle before fading into mediocrity as the new dominate genre takes its place. My observation is that it has gone roughly along the lines of arcade, platformers, fighting games/ beat'em ups, RPGs, and finally first person shooters. My question is this, what do you see becoming the next big thing in the industry and how long do you think the first person shooter's reign will continue? Or do you think I am simply full of shit?

Question Time:

With the last few JRPGs (Tales of Versperia, Infinite Undiscoveray) getting not the best reviews do any of you think that JRPGs is a dying genre? Also do any of you care?

Now that Castle Crashers and Braid are out is there anything to be looking forward to on XBLA?

On the month musings topics what game disappointed you the most?

Also Puns:

You don't need a Killer Instinct to know this game will be amazing!

I also think Ashly should defiantly join the Podtoid crew.

Also question time

1) What would the Podtoid crew like to see as DLC for Rock Band 2?

2) On a scale of 1-10 how scared were you we were all going to die last Wednesday?

3) On the topic of the whole piracy thing with Spore, do you think EA are getting their just desserts for the silly DRM or are people just using it as another excuse to pirate shit?

4) Which games are there that the Podtoid crew want to play but can't find on this damn earth?

Also cocks

I miss tiff already :(

I'm interested to know everyone's take on the issue with EA's ridiculous DRM and the subsequent consumer backlash - Do you think EA will eventually relent like they did with the BF: Bad Company DLC debacle? Or will EA's anti-piracy measures simply encourage other publishers to help pave the way to a new era of electronic fascism?

Question: Do you think Dtoid is becoming a "cult of personality" instead of a "hardcore game site"?

Also, I think you SHOULD discuss Brilliam's Cblog. He touches on a lot of important things. I was going to write a very similar piece, but I'm glad he did it first. Do you feel the way he does, in general? In general, I do, especially regarding community response.

Again, Brilliam, I don't quite get the collared shirt thing, but whatever.

With Mr Moly talking about the flaws in his game before it is out will it set a precendent that all games should be honestly talked about by their creators (at least in a few cases) or will we have more developers telling us Too Human is perfection in every way?

When talking, and even thinking about games, we tend to use excessively combative terms and mentalities: Different systems are said to be in a "console war," promising new games are referred to as "______ Killers," as if by being a game in the same genre as a established favorite, it automatically has to compete to dethrone the former, and sales and ratings of completely different games in completly different genres are compared to one another to determine some sort of superiority between them. This may be too much to ask, as this mentality is present in all facets of our life, but do you think the gaming industry would be better off if we stopped pitting consoles, companies, games and now even nations against each other and recognized that different games/consoles/etc each have different a appeal and can coexist peacefully? Obviously not to the point where there is no competition what so ever, as, not only would it be impossible, but would hinder progress and quality, but do you think it would be reasonable and helpful to change at least some of our conflict mentality about games?

questions;

1/ Does anyone think that Markie Mark Wahlberg will make a suitable Max Payne not taking into account the fact that the film will make children weep blood, unfortunately for me Wahlberg hasn't got a polygon for a face.

2/ Would you have payed $90 for GTA IV like some analysis's thought it could have been priced at.

3/ And this is for Jim who would win in a fight "Jif" or "Cif"

This is somewhat related to Affable Robot's question about the decline of JRPG's. Many Japanese developers have been talking about wanting to become more like their western counterparts. Do you think that even if they do, will they still compete or should they try something else?

As a lover of JRPG's I would be crushed to see the genre disappear.

Yo, quick question for Topher. You seem to be ontop of all things ChipTunes, so I figured i'd ask if you about this. I've heard heaps of remixes and modern day covers of classic Nes themes, and I've heard plenty of fantastic original songs made using 8bit sounds, but one thing I haven't heard yet is a Chip Tunes artist covering current popular songs in an 8bit format (ie, taking some half decent metallica song and making it sound like it was a level theme in megaman 2). Have you heard of anyone doing this, and if so, can you pls point me in the right direction to get my hands on it?

Cheers!
