Podtoid 66: Braidtoid

3:50 PM on 08.21.2008   |   Anthony Burch

eere

Last night, Tiff Chow, Jim Sterling, Aaron Linde and myself were joined by Jonathan Blow, creator of the single best game ever to hit Xbox Live Arcade.

It was pretty awesome. You can listen to the whole thing here.

Though we didn't technically discuss any spoilers, I still wouldn't recommend listening unless you've played through the game: certain things about the ending are hinted at, and most of the discussion probably won't be that interesting to you anyway if you haven't actually experienced the game yet.

Topics of discussion included:

-Tiff Chow: sings her most frightening jingle yet

-Was the ending set in stone from the beginning of production?

-Jon likes Space Giraffe, Aaron and Jim are rocked to their very cores

-Jon weighs in (sort of) on the whole "Braid is about the development of the nuke" theory

-Game prototypes

-The one thing in Braid Jon isn't 100% happy with

Considering almost every single reader question asked resulted in a really interesting response from Mr. Blow, it was even harder than usual to pick a best question. However, Jon personally picked out The GHost's question near the end of the episode, and gave an answer I did not expect. Just post your email in the comments, GHost, and I'll contact you about receiving your swag.

[The music is from the game.]

He doesn't specifically mention The GHost by name, but he uses his question (is there anything about Braid you're not happy with).

Blow has a link to a taiji video on his site. This makes him way f'in awesome, and I respect him even more now as a developer. We need more developers who are interested in bigger things.

Frick now im torn. I loved the game, the guy seems like a great guy, his views are very interesting on indie.
But i still want him to stop avoiding the fricking questions and saying "you can thing what you want"(paraphrased).
I can appreciate story, gameplay, design and seek deper meaing from it but to have no overall answear even from the developer, if not in the game, is a complete cop out.

I mean for god sake if I can think what i want the i could have just wrote my own fricking story on a piece of paper!
Sure its not the smartest opinion but its the least bloody Pretentious.

Mine too. But it was a shitty question. I should have asked him if he was aware that finishing the game and playing through the epilogue at 4 in the morning while listening to a drunk, passed out friend talk in his sleep scares the living shit out of the person playing.

Shit, I always miss the pre-show posts. I really wanted to ask Jonathan why chose XBLA for an initial release over the PC (possibly through Steam). Obviously I don't know much about how these work, but given what I've heard he'd be have much more control over the price, and could make more money while selling it for less. Also, I would expect the PC market to be much more receptive to this type of game, or at the least not complain as much about the pricing as there is no set standard for indy-games.

I'm happy to hear the game will be coming to PC hopefully soon though, as I did decide to hold out for that version.

I really enjoyed listening to Jonathan Blow talk about Braid. He didn't just reveal a lot about Braid, but a lot about game design and Microsoft's kind of strict policies that a lot of gamers may find interesting. Really awesome stuff.

Also, I have Mountain King on my C64 and the game is pure evil. EVIL!

This may be a comment. It depends on what time zone you are in is, who you are, why you are reading it, whether or not you understand the English language, what kind of jam you take with your toast, and if you wipe from front to back. Just don't ask me, I'm only the guy who wrote it.

still can't say braid appeals to me, but i have alot of respect for jonathan blow after hearing this podcast. He seems like a genuinely decent guy with a strong vision. Definitely appreciated his comments about the ambiguity of feeling towards the profitability of braid and it's commercial success and it's nice to hear a developer speak in such an open and honest way.

Excellent podcast. You should have intelligent, well-spoken guests like Mr. Blow on more often. As a developer myself I was completely entranced.

Outstanding podcast. Blow is a genius. Braid was fantastic.

btw, Can someone please tell me the name of the guy at EA that is a paradox? I couldn't hear the name they said. Thanks.

Great pod guys... I haven't played Braid, being a PS3 owner, but was still totally into what he was saying and, in particular, the art style part he spoke about.

He sounds like a nice guy. The way PSN is going I think it would be a good idea to have it made for the PS3....

mMybe we can get some kind of Braid Sackboy tie-in and Bob's your uncle, Fanny's your aunt and Gilbert's your goldfish... you're onto a winner.
