You know what's great about Takashi Miike?

Nothing.

On tonight's Podtoid, we're doing a mixture of E3 wrap-up impressions and some trend predictions regarding casual games and the Wii. As always, we will require reader questions, the best of which will net the person who asked it $25.

So, feel free to hit that jump and ask away.

Sonnet yo.

The Three E's

There was Nintendo and their pronouncement
of Wii music with its poor dancing tools
flailing about with scripted excitement.
I honestly felt sorry for the fools.

Sony had a somewhat better showing.
They showed a few games I might care about,
it’s too bad they’re all a long time coming.
Just tell me when Little Big Planet’s out.

Then there’s Microsoft and their Avatars,
and I know I can’t wait until I get
the great honor of paying top dollar
for Doritos shirts and sweaters well knit.

But even with the bad it should be fine
because I can’t wait for Mega Man 9.

And I have a quick question about the hype from E3. It seems that once again people are screaming bloody murder over the "casual menace". Do you think these arguments have any more merit after what you saw at E3 or are these people still complaining for the sake of complaining.

Do you think Nintendo shot itself in the foot when it released Metroid, Kart, Galaxy and Brawl so close together. These types of games usually take a longer development process than say Wii sports resort and now it's seems that all we really have is Warioland and Animal crossing to look forward to. Do you think Nintendo could have held back on one or two titles to give itself breathing room? Or is it possible that this is a inevitability with them split between Wii blank/nintendog type games and their classic franchises?

In an interview with one of the guys from the new Prince of Persia game he said something along the lines of game over and continue screens are archaic. Do you guys feel that the time of the game over screens/life bars/continues and even lives is over?

I was supposed to see that movie at the Fantasia Film Festival on July 3rd but I missed it. Way to rub salt on the wounds, Burch.

Of everyone you saw, whose is the company most guilty of annoying PR hypewords? Which is most guilty of straight-up dirty fucking lies? Which is the opposite of that, and was totally fucking awesome and honest with youze?

Something that really interests me about Mirror's Edge is that the developer seems to be putting firearms into the game, but then implicitly encouraging you not to use them. The game seems to be about running away from danger instead of blowing it away, which seems pretty radically different than most games on the market (in fact, all that comes to mind is Dino Run...). I've also read that there's an achievement for finishing the game without firing a single bullet. To me this seems like a very daring direction to take a AAA title like this, and I applaud the developers for it.

My question is, does this kind of gameplay sound compelling to anyone but me, or will you all be playing the game as a shooter?

How long do you think companies, especially Nintendo, can ignore the "hardcore" audience? I realize not all companies are doing this, and those that are are making a ton of money selling mini games to our moms. Will this drought ever end and if it does how?

Also great idea or greatest idea: Lego Event Horizon?

Are you tired of the games media reporting on E3 as an event, discussing it's apparent demise over the last two years rather than focusing on the games themselves? Or are there really so few games in attendance that the gaming community was not familiar with before hand, and we should just dwell on the fact that E3 isn't what it used to be? Do any of you foresee more north american gaming companies making large announcements at events such as Leipzig Games Convention and TGS due to the diminished state of e3? Should I just shut up because asking these questions will just spark more conversation about E3 itself than some swank new games?

What do you think this secret PS3 game is going to be? So far we know it's not an FPS or an RPG, and it hasn't been announced yet. So it can't be Heavy Rain. What do you think?

Anthony: How was Left 4 Dead? I am looking forward to this game because nothing pleases me more than killing legions of the blood thirsty undead. I noticed there was some new art for the game as well. Do you think this will be an excuse to further delay the game, or a positive step forward? Also, are you aware that firefox does not recognize "undead" as a word?

Also, now that you've played Fallout 3, how miserable do you find the "fallout fans" who are complaining about Bethesda's approach?

Aaron: What will you hold over Anthony's head now that he's had a chance to play Left 4 Dead?

Tiff: How do you feel about the reaction to the announcement of Fat Princess? I know that the Sexism show was influenced heavily by your opinions as the only female cast member, so how do you feel about the feminist reaction to the title?

Jim: How long until you never want to see the number nine thousand again? And yes, I did enter that contest and I am sorry for adding to your troubles.

Bonus picture of some messed up thing I found.

Oddly enough, this is video game related. The owl has the mouth from Abyss (SC3) photoshopped in. Looking forward to hearing the show.

Do you think that, in reality, it might be that many gamers don't worry about the casual onslaught because of some percieved attack on the so-called 'hardcore'? Perhaps they worry for the far less noble reason that the casual gamers they know might think that games don't actually get any more deep or interesting than Bejeweled... which reinforces that pesky 'games are a waste of time' image.

Hey podtoid, how's it going? I'd like to ask you all what you feel about the design of the new Prince of Persia's death "sequences" in which you are saved by the girl that follows you around, considered to be a "death" and restart sometime before the sequence took place. Ubisoft asserts that games as a medium have evolved past the need for game over screens, but do you think that this is really the case, and if it is, will other game developers actually follow suit if Prince of Persia sells well (which it probably will)?

Was anyone really that surprised that the Nintendo E3 press conference was so shitty? They've already recently released games for all their franchises, they'll need to time to develop a new Mario/Zelda/Metroid/Smash/Kart etc. Storage solutions? They were already clear on their opinions on that matter.

Really? What's left? More shitty Wii accessories with their shitty Wii titled games. New IP? This is Nintendo.

I just think Nintendo had nothing, so they showed what they got. Just came off like they were focusing on 'casual' gamers now and ignoring the 'core' gamers.

Sadly, it looks the like the biggest piece of news to come out of E3 was the announcement of Final Fantasy 13 no longer being a PS# exclusive, which has spouted countless squabbles between fanboys of both camps. And while this pointless bickering may seems irrelevant and idiotic to the outside viewer (and rightly so since it is.) I wonder though, is this behavioral pattern of open hostility based on allegiance to a larger entity and another persons allegiance to a separate large entity, i not just exclusive to the rabid fanboys but present in all aspects of society?

If you think about it, isn't the console fanboys' arguments incredibly similar to fights between rival sports fans and on a larger scale, wars of opposing religions and countries? As depressing a notion as this is, is faboyism a part of human nature?

Also, how the hell am I supposed to take down six Metal Gear RAYs by myself?

Brilliam:
You missed nothing. Like all of Miike's movies (apart from Audition, which was just really dull, building to a gory climax everyone knew was coming and which therefore disappointed), it was too self-aware and goofy and "OOOOH LOOK AT HOW PROVOCATIVE AND SHOCKING I AM, ARE YOU NOT ROCKED TO YOUR VERY CORE???" to be interesting.

Regarding casual wii games: Most are crap, and the core gamers know to stay away from crap. This must mean that it's the young kids, soccer moms and aarp members buying these games. How long until they get their fill (or learn to tell good from bad) and the demand runs out?

How do you feel about the death of the dedicated videogame machine? As hardware becomes more powerful, it seems that systems which "only" play games are fading fast. Coming into this generation, there was only one dedicated gaming machine. Despite the Wii having the highest user base, it is not catering to the hobbyist crowd. Do the other systems need added functionality to keep pace in sales?

What's great about Miike? It's his dedication to making movies. The man goes at any project he feels he can do something with, and although they're hit-or-miss films, he does a generally good job in terms of directing. Sukiyaki Western Django got its attention because Tarantino was in it and it was all in English -- interesting, but not necessarily an indicator of good.

Go watch Audition or Gozu!

Will the parallel trends of casual gaming and "Deluxe Box sets" for big releases (ie the GTA IV duffel bag, Gears 2 with art book, etc and a certain cat helmet) ever converge or is the appeal of an expanded purchase for a game limited to the enthusiast corner of the gaming public?

In essence, will I ever be able to buy a Peggle Deluxe Edition with videos detailing exactly which games they ripped off and with how much malicious intent they did so?

Sorry to hear the new Miike movie sucked. Go see The Dark Knight to get the bad taste out of your mouth, if you haven't already. If not for the movie itself, then to see the Watchmen trailer on the big screen.

Anyways, here's my question, albeit a stupid one:
Does anyone really give a shit about feminist bloggers' uproars over "Fat Princess"?

The site Feminist Gamer threw out some very amusing quotes, saying the game will spawn a "new generation of fat-hating, heteronormative assholes." and that it will "reinforce nasty stereotypes about women and the obese."

Shouldn't they be more worried about what (fat)asses they're making themselves out to be, rather than worry about what negative stereotypes that a playful game like this will enforce?
