WALL•E comes out this week!

Yes, I know the last "proper" episode was #58, followed by our special MGS4 digression, but nothing terribly interesting happened this week and we need to pretend that this 100% Reader Question-filled episode is occurring because we reached some sort of episode count milestone. So, tonight's episode is number 60.

Again, we're relying totally on you for discussion topics this week: you can ask about whatever the heck you want (within reason), and we'll try to answer as many questions as we can in an hour and a half. The best question, as always, will earn the person who asked it $25.

I negleted to mention a sonnet theme last week, but in case you're still interested, the sonnet theme is "contradictory female strength and sexism in Metal Gear Solid." Ideally, you won't actually use that entire phrase.

Anyway, hit the comments and get to asking -- we're counting on you.

A question I have been trying to work out for ages. Is the artist formally known as CliffyB a very cool, smart videogames designer. In tune with modern gaming and in the top of his league. Or a pretentious man-boy making games designed for 16 year old boys with less skill and subtlety than an eliphant raping.

I am genuinely not sure. Maybe he is both?

With E3 coming up in the next few weeks, how do you guys feel about E3 in general? Is it good to have a drought of info for months and then a huge dump of it all at once? Also, from a purely journalistic standpoint, how do you feel about having to do huge writeups at some points during the year, and sometimes being stricken with times where nothing can be reported, and having to resort to all-reader-questions episodes of podtoid?

Congrats to Jim on his Pokemon article making the frontpage of Digg! I have to ask though, why are we supposed to care if diggers like are articles or not? They seem like a bunch of tools.

One more question fir Jim, Whats wrong with girafarig?

Will Jim please say the following things in his Liquid Snake voice:

"Whatcha gonna do brother, when Hulkamania runs wild on you?!"

"Hey pizanos, its the Super Mario Bros Super Show."

"If it wasn't for my horse, I wouldn't have spent that year in college."

"The president has been kidnapped. Are you a bad enough dude to save him?"

"I want chicken. I want liver. Meow Mix, Meow Mix please deliver."

With Dr. Boa's recent post, what do you think of this game he's developing? The general consesus seems to be that people like the character design that he's now not using. Your thoughts?

I forgot, I had another question :P I was thinking about the sexism episode, and was wondering how much of it is because the gaming industry is male centric and how much is just wacky Japanese culture? While character design in Western games like Tomb Raider and Gears of Wars is brought about by the aforementioned male centric industry. But could it be games like Dead or Alive, the creepy DS game where you molest little girls and Soul Caliber are just a product of Japanese Culture in general, and not of a specific gender bias in the industry?

If you could go back in time and stop the Ocarina of Time scandal, would you? Keep in mind that you wouldn't be remembered for anything after you die if you stopped it.

Who is your favorite person who has been on Art Attack Friday. Also, What constitutes a good Female Charachter in a game for you? No offense, but your standards sounded a little high last episode. I mean with MGS, I think the women are a littloe over the top sometimes, but they are strong, vulneranble, and sometimes use their femonine charms to get what they want like any other woman

Jim
Would you give up saying the word CUNT just to be able to get a PS3 that worked both in Europe and Americafor free, a copy of MGS4 that works in both places for free, and time to beat it multiple times? Also, why are you so awesome?

With all of the departures from the ESA and E3, and the third party companies deciding they'd rather hold their own events during the same time/place, what do you think the future holds for E3? Will it die or continue to evolve? Does it even matter?

First, a sonnet. It's not that good but I have work in 20 minutes.

MGS4 is indeed an odd one,
giving us characters who flip between
instances of strength which are not outdone
by sexual stereotypes on screen.

In the first there was Meryl, who seemed fine,
but she often broke down in key moments.
But Otacon too showed to have no spine;
he pissed himself during ninja’s manhunt.

And then we have the beauty and beast corp,
who all, though insane, show a depth not fake,
but they all become weird, creepy ass whores.
When beaten they try to ride Solids snake.

I’ve no end here so to Tiff I say this,
grats with Adama now help me meet Six.

Second, with the recent news about PS3 trophies, are you guys at all interested in what they'll bring to the system? I'm personally not a whore for those things, but I do like the idea of achievements without a cumulative score a la Steam. And as more and more consoles/pc programs integrate these types of reward systems do you think these meaningless points will become less important, or will they simply be virtual viagra for people's epeens?

If you didn't find a passion for games, what would you be doing otherwise? Do you sometimes regret the general lack of tangible reward/skill acquisition that comes from having gaming as a hobby/passion?

I mean, if we all played basketball as much as we gamed, we'd all be pretty buff by now, yeah? Or if we created art as much as we gamed, we'd have hefty portfolios by now, right?

Are the ideas of ‘Continues’ and ‘Lives’ that originated in Arcade games redundant in modern gaming?

If so, with the loss of this sense of dread or panic of ‘losing your guy’ do you know of any examples of games that use other means for adding value to the life of your character?

….
It seems GTA4 penalises you so little for dying, it’s preferable to being caught by police.

To each cast member:

What is your favorite video game story, and what makes it a great story (as a matter apart from it being tied to fun gameplay)? What would this story lose in being translated to a non-interactive medium, and how does it compare to any favorite stories you may have in non-interactive media?

What are your opinions on "Water Levels" in games? Not only the literal definition (such as the water level in the first Sonic game) but also the metaphorical definition of those odd-ball levels (such as escort missions, chase scenes, low gravity levels, sneaking levels, etc).

In other words, those crazy yet memorable levels in video games that require an alternate playstyle compared to the standard way of playing the game in question.

Has it ever been done right? What are the worst "water levels" you have seen in a game?

I have a terrible memory and forget alot about questions that have been asked in the past, but I was thinking about it today and wanted to ask you, that of today's gaming industry do you feel like the quality of story and artwork needs to be improved, or does the quality of actual gameplay need to be improved? Obviously it would be nice to have both of them improved but I wanted to know which one you guys might think is more lacking?

Do any of you (CHAD) wish to atone for any of the ridiculously grandiose statements that were made regarding MGS4 being (among many other silly things)better than Shakespeare and the most sophisticated form of narrative storytelling ever created?

Seriously, you've come off your high now, the story line is ri-fucking-diculous, admit it.... it's a glorified 'interactive movie' with bits of game play scattered throughout, right, a very good game but not the pinnacle of human artistic achievement, right????

RIGHT? My faith in Dtoid is still shaken by this...

I've noticed more and more here in the UK that the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) are handling the rating system for many 15-18+ games. Do you feel that a board setup to review movies, a world in which you are only ever an observer can fully review and rate an interactive imersive world (i.e. game) with the same critique?

In short, do you feel the BBFC are qualified to review video games?

Questions Ahoy!

-Do you want to see Wall*E only because the Main Character looks like Toon ROB?

-If someone said they hated Metal Gear Solid, or any of the sequels, what would you say to them?

-Jim, now that you're getting off your Controversy High, is this affecting you any?

-Is there any chance you'll be inviting any Dtoid Members onto the show as bonus-people?

-Which ---IV/4 game do you seem is the greatest? How do you feel about the Fouth game in a series anyway? Do the games seem to get stale, or are they able to be revitalized in certain ways? Can you give examples of either case?

That's all for now!

I was wondering how you felt about games with multiple endings. It seems that more recently, the number of games with this kind of feature are diminishing in favor of more linear games with unlockables or some online feature to form some kind of replay factor. Personally, I always love multi-ending games (like Chrono Trigger or any of the Silent Hill games), but more recent games that have multiple endings seem shallow in comparison to their predecessors. I understand that it can be hell to keep a coherent narrative when you make room for multiple endings, but I still miss that as a feature of a game, not an afterthought.

Im reproducing my overly long question from last week. Skip to the end for the short version if you like.

I know on a recent show, you discussed the fact the games industry was holding firm despite the low economy as part of a community question.

Firstly, I'm not entirely sure our community are the most objective people to be discussing whether or not the industry is holding firm.

I would also like to postulate a different theory:

I'm not entirely sure how the economy has been affected in the states, but people are struggling just with food and petrol bills over here. When the belt needs to be tightened, the obvious areas to cut are luxuries. The people who have only just entered video gaming and spent the least money, are also the least likely to stick it out when theres other things to spend money on.

Therefore I wonder whether the so-called 'casual' demographic could be the first to suffer from the lower economy.

What do you guys think?? Could the companies who are going for the 'easy money' be the first to bite the bullet?? Or was the question just too long??

Short Version:

Due to the economy heading to hell in a hand basket, do you think that companies concentrating on the so called 'casual' demographic may be burned because the people who have been into gaming for less time, are also less likely to invest in it when money is tight?? Or do you think this new gamer demographic had nothing to do with the comparatively lush economy we've been enjoying for these last few years.

in retail game stores, the DS section is roughly 10% actual game (regardless of quality) and 90% shovel-ware.

do you think the DS would ever usher in a similar depression like the atari 2600 did all those years ago? would such a thing be possible in this day and age?
