UPDATE: We are talking about sexism this week. You don't have to repost your questions from last week -- we'll just use them for episode 58.
Additionally, we'll be talking about the Spore Creature Creator, Jim's article on linearity, and assorted other news events. And you know what that means: totally random reader questions ahoy!
This week's sonnet theme is "an incomplete cast." As always, the best sonnets will be read aloud on air, and the best question will net the person who asked it a hefty $25, which can go to your PS3/MGS4 fund.
Anyway, hit the comments and ask stuff. And, again, if you asked a question about sexism last week, you don't have to repost it.
ALSO: I neglected to mention that we will actually be having a second, special episode of Podtoid SOLELY to discuss MGS4 on Friday, so you'd do well to save your MGS4 questions for tomorrow's preshow post.
Participation Partial
It’s Thursday night and I click on the link
on Destructoids main page and I begin
to read the show notes, but my heart soon sinks
because cast members are missing herein.
With Tiff now sick and pucking something mean
we’re already one member down, and soon
Jim will pass out as if taking codeine
Since time in England is quite out of tune.
That leaves only two with Rev and Linde
but this will have an outcome no better,
as Aaron must attned to a monkey
waiting alone in a large theater.
But the odd cast is never a problem
because you guys are all freakin awesome.
Also, would Jim bang Mrs. Weibe so hard that his ejaculate will open up a hole in the space-time continuum and hit her in the face three days later?
Also, which did you find more inappropriate: Mei-Ling and her ancient Chinese proverbs, or Para-Medic asking Big Boss if he had seen various movies while in the middle of a mission?
Revmgs Go!, Destructoid's number one espionage gaming podcast.
I love how you were bitching about the fanboys.
I'm not intending to bash the games here, I'd just like to know what the cast thinks is the minimum level of interactivity we should expect from a game, and whether the MGS series gains anything for being video games instead of just movies. Did Kojima miss his calling?
Maybe this is more a question for RFG but they don't give $25 - ever played a game obsessively as a kid, forget about it, and then come back to it years later, either to be glad you did or disappointed that your standards were lower back then? I recently revived my Red Alert 2 addiction, which is why I ask.
A few days ago, I attempted to play Crackdown only to find that my savegame data had been obliterated. Being predominantly a PC gamer, this has never been much of a problem for me because I usually backup my savegames, but that's impossible when it comes to consoles, and has been for ages. Would you pay extra money to backup your save games to a LIVE server when you turn the console off?
Also, I adore Watcha Playin. I want more. Please make more.
Wow that was fail on my part.
...Either you subliminally already told us that or you are very predictable. Deja vu, anyone?
Out of all female protagonists and game characters out there, which would you consider a "good" portrayal of the gender?
A friend of mine and I would often discuss this back at school. She was the defacto leader of the feminist movement on campus and often sought my attentions for discussing issues of this nature. Most video game heroines are overly sexualized or have moments of cliché female weakness that tend to be an insult to people with feminist ideals. The conclusion my friend came up with is that we would really have to create our own game just so such a character could exist. I'd like to hear everyone's opinion on this, and I am not expecting Rev to be Captain Misogyny with his answer, but I could be surprised. Either way, looking forward to listening.
And to play devil's advocate:
What are some of the most prevalent stereotypes for male characters that you can recall?
(Yes I think that there are negative stereotypes for male characters as well.)
Any games that stand out to you to have broken the sexual stereotypes for either male or female characters?
What exactly constitutes a sexist character? It's it just the personality, or can physical attributes make a character a sexist portrayal? For example Mia Fey of the Phoenix Wright series has the opposite personality of the stereotypical helpless damsel in distress, but she still has a ridiculously large chest. Is she a still a sexist character, despite her strong personality?
Also, cocks.
also, would doki doki majo shinpan be considered sexist or just perverted?
also...darth vader
Firstly, I'm not entirely sure our community are the most objective people to be discussing whether or not the industry is holding firm.
I would also like to postulate a different theory:
I'm not entirely sure how the economy has been affected in the states, but people are struggling just with food and petrol bills over here. When the belt needs to be tightened, the obvious areas to cut are luxuries. The people who have only just entered video gaming and spent the least money, are also the least likely to stick it out when theres other things to spend money on.
Therefore I wonder whether the so-called 'casual' demographic could be the first to suffer from the lower economy.
What do you guys think?? Could the companies who are going for the 'easy money' be the first to bite the bullet?? Or was the question just too long??
One is useless with out the other.
For one thing, I have a challenge for Jim. For a full 20 minutes he cannot:
-Do a Liquid or Solid Snake Impression (Others are fine.)
-Bash Mass Effect
-Express his want to jizz all over Nicole Weibe and/or Tiff
-Or be sexist/sarcastic.
He may also express his undying affection to Wardrox and his PS3, on the show. This is optional, however.
Now, on the topic of questions:
1: (Addressed to Tiff mostly, but others may answer.) Just how do you feel about the underlying sexism in not only games, but in many other forms of entertainment? That said, do you have any games that you think try to combat this? Any that do nothing about it?
2: (To be answered before or after Jim finishes the challenge, if he does so.) With many JRPGs out there, many including young main characters, why do you think that many of the obviously underage girls will have giant tits? Possible sexism, do you think?
3: Any person, real or fictional. Marry, Screw, or Kill. Go.
Do you think that the portrayal of male characters in games such as Gears of War and Army of Two can be called sexist?
Everybody talks about how female characters can be portrayed poorly and label it (with good justification) as sexism. However when a male character is portrayed in this fashion, people mock the characters for being shallow but they do not mention sexism at all, although if most men had a good hard look at the character's portrayal they would find it demeaning, stereotyping men as nothing more than grunting apes who like to kill things.
What are your thoughts?
....Viva la Dtoid :D
One of the ways you can beat "The End" in Metal Gear Solid 3 is to put your PS2's System Clock forward a week, and have "The End" die of old age.
Have any of you guys ever "waited" through a game section or used other unconventional means to let you get through a particular section in a game without bothering to actually play it?
Shouldn't the old X-men arcade be on XBLA? srsly.
Also: shouldn't female charcters in games put some f***ing clothes on? at least for one game?
Another: Don't the poor (relatively) sales of Bloom Blox dissapoint you?
Do any of you guys know where Cydonia is? (no using the innernette)
There can't be so many childish people in gaming community.
I hate looking at the sporepedia more than I hat going on Xbox Live.
i linked it in some other blog, but it's the "dreaming in an empty room" article.
