Quantcast

UPDATE: We are talking about sexism this week. You don't have to repost your questions from last week -- we'll just use them for episode 58.

Additionally, we'll be talking about the Spore Creature Creator, Jim's article on linearity,  and assorted other news events. And you know what that means: totally random reader questions ahoy!

This week's sonnet theme is "an incomplete cast." As always, the best sonnets will be read aloud on air, and the best question will net the person who asked it a hefty $25, which can go to your PS3/MGS4 fund.

Anyway, hit the comments and ask stuff. And, again, if you asked a question about sexism last week, you don't have to repost it.

ALSO: I neglected to mention that we will actually be having a second, special episode of Podtoid SOLELY to discuss MGS4 on Friday, so you'd do well to save your MGS4 questions for tomorrow's preshow post.

Sonnet time again.

Participation Partial

It’s Thursday night and I click on the link
on Destructoids main page and I begin
to read the show notes, but my heart soon sinks
because cast members are missing herein.

With Tiff now sick and pucking something mean
we’re already one member down, and soon
Jim will pass out as if taking codeine
Since time in England is quite out of tune.

That leaves only two with Rev and Linde
but this will have an outcome no better,
as Aaron must attned to a monkey
waiting alone in a large theater.

But the odd cast is never a problem
because you guys are all freakin awesome.

Generally, how to you prefer to learn a game: A detailed manual or an optional tutorial on the main screen? ... or if you must, the first level is basically a tutorial.

Also, would Jim bang Mrs. Weibe so hard that his ejaculate will open up a hole in the space-time continuum and hit her in the face three days later?

We all know that Jim does a mean Liquid Snake impersonation. My question is can he do a Major Zero impersonation?

Also, which did you find more inappropriate: Mei-Ling and her ancient Chinese proverbs, or Para-Medic asking Big Boss if he had seen various movies while in the middle of a mission?

Because MGS4 was just released, I've been thinking lately about player agency in game stories and how much interactivity we each require to justify a game's validity as a game. I'm not a fan of the series, which may make my opinion unpopular on this podcast, but I have played MGS 1-3, so I've given the series a fair chance. Kojima wears his cinematic aspirations on his sleeve, but it seems to me that the MGS series offers so little interactivity that it's a wonder he doesn't just make movies instead.

I'm not intending to bash the games here, I'd just like to know what the cast thinks is the minimum level of interactivity we should expect from a game, and whether the MGS series gains anything for being video games instead of just movies. Did Kojima miss his calling?

Two questions.
Maybe this is more a question for RFG but they don't give $25 - ever played a game obsessively as a kid, forget about it, and then come back to it years later, either to be glad you did or disappointed that your standards were lower back then? I recently revived my Red Alert 2 addiction, which is why I ask.

A few days ago, I attempted to play Crackdown only to find that my savegame data had been obliterated. Being predominantly a PC gamer, this has never been much of a problem for me because I usually backup my savegames, but that's impossible when it comes to consoles, and has been for ages. Would you pay extra money to backup your save games to a LIVE server when you turn the console off?

Also, I adore Watcha Playin. I want more. Please make more.

A question that we've all tiptoed around for a long time "Are we living in an era where exclusives are dead?" Now, excluding first party exclusives and the WII, are we living in what could almost be argued as a "one console world". With games becoming more expensive and extravagant, how can producers afford to lose out on a larger market? GTA sold just about 50/50 for the ps3 and 360 that first week. Would a company be willing to eat the loss of 50 percent of their profits in hopes that they could sell a system, or on the other side would the system be willing to pay for the equivalent of the games they couldn't sell on their competitor? With Bioshock already showing that "never going to another system" doesn't really mean never, would it be shocking to see the end of exclusives, or at least only limited time exclusives.

Sexism is usual funny, but with the average intelligence of most gamers hovering around the 4 year old level (cite: Xbox Live), could it's perfectly legitimate and humorous adaptation be taken the wrong way and actually be damaging?

With MGS4 and GTA4 both scoring 10 or near 10 reviews, I began to wonder if part of those scores came from the hype factor around it, brand new IP's can certainly have hype, but if you think about those two games we have played them before more or less. Some thing may have change but the core ideas are still present. No doubt, the developers had a chance to listen to fans and see what they liked and what they didn't. Thus being able to constantly reform a game till it is more or less tailor made for the gamer's palate. Do you think is wrong to uphold these games to highly when there nothing more than everything we have asked for mashed into one game. Do not misunderstand me, I own both and there damn good but is this reliance on sequels possibly harmful to the industry? could it send the message that they should not try a stray from what works?

Since the podcast will probably touch on sexism, and I did not make a question about it last week, I suppose will toss one up here.
Out of all female protagonists and game characters out there, which would you consider a "good" portrayal of the gender?

A friend of mine and I would often discuss this back at school. She was the defacto leader of the feminist movement on campus and often sought my attentions for discussing issues of this nature. Most video game heroines are overly sexualized or have moments of cliché female weakness that tend to be an insult to people with feminist ideals. The conclusion my friend came up with is that we would really have to create our own game just so such a character could exist. I'd like to hear everyone's opinion on this, and I am not expecting Rev to be Captain Misogyny with his answer, but I could be surprised. Either way, looking forward to listening.

How do you guys feel about people describing themselves, or you, as gamers? I think the whole thing is sort of goofy and insulting. I play games. I've played games for over twenty years. Regardless, shoot me in the fuckin' face the day I identify myself as a gamer. It's not that I'm ashamed of playing games. Quite the opposite. But identifying one's self by an ultimately inconsequential activity? I enjoy a nice nap. Does that make me a napper? I drive places sometimes. Can't say I've ever told anyone I'm a driver. I don't understand the whole phenomenon. What makes gaming so different or special that people find it necessary to go as far as to define themselves based on it?

What are some of the most prevalent stereotypes for female characters that you can recall?

And to play devil's advocate:

What are some of the most prevalent stereotypes for male characters that you can recall?

(Yes I think that there are negative stereotypes for male characters as well.)

Any games that stand out to you to have broken the sexual stereotypes for either male or female characters?

What exactly constitutes a sexist character? It's it just the personality, or can physical attributes make a character a sexist portrayal? For example [urlhttp://www.the-isb.com/images/PW-Mia.jpg]Mia Fey[/url] of the Phoenix Wright series has the opposite personality of the stereotypical helpless damsel in distress, but she still has a ridiculously large chest. Is she a still a sexist character, despite her strong personality?

What are your guys thoughts on how gamers view games before they are even released? For example, a lot of people are already saying that the new Banjo-Kazooie game is going to be crap since it is such a departure from the original games. At the same time they bash Gears of War 2 because it looks exactly like the first one. Its the same with the new Sonic game. People are already calling it crap because of quick time events. What do you guys think about people who call games crap before they even get their hands on them?

Do you think we'll start seeing more female characters that can contribute a lot to a game, i.e. Alyx in Half-Life 2, that aren't complete parodies of what women really look/act like or will that kind of equality be limited to the groundbreaking games?

Also, cocks.

How do you guys feel about the way Soul Calibur 4 seems to be marketed? They seem to be pushing it as "boobs with swords" instead of what it is, a weapons-based 3-d fighter that remains to be unique compared to its contemporaries. Is this whoring out the franchise or just good business?

I know on a recent show, you discussed the fact the games industry was holding firm despite the low economy as part of a community question.

Firstly, I'm not entirely sure our community are the most objective people to be discussing whether or not the industry is holding firm.

I would also like to postulate a different theory:

I'm not entirely sure how the economy has been affected in the states, but people are struggling just with food and petrol bills over here. When the belt needs to be tightened, the obvious areas to cut are luxuries. The people who have only just entered video gaming and spent the least money, are also the least likely to stick it out when theres other things to spend money on.

Therefore I wonder whether the so-called 'casual' demographic could be the first to suffer from the lower economy.

What do you guys think?? Could the companies who are going for the 'easy money' be the first to bite the bullet?? Or was the question just too long??

this is just something I wanted to say and I'm wondering if I am crazy for doing this yesterday my friend and I head to Game Crazy to trade in Halo 3 and Gears Of War to get MSG4, also he has only $10 and me $20 and my intentions were to get some Wii Points since I havn't downloaded anything for awhile so to make a long story short he doesn't have enough and for some reason I feel bad and chip in the rest and now I got to stay a few more days to make that back so no points for me but MGS4 for him.am I crazy or just a little too nice this happens often at times should I have made him earn enough to get the game on his own your thoughts would be most helpful thanks

Alright...let's see here.

For one thing, I have a challenge for Jim. For a full 20 minutes he cannot:
-Do a Liquid or Solid Snake Impression (Others are fine.)
-Bash Mass Effect
-Express his want to jizz all over Nicole Weibe and/or Tiff
-Or be sexist/sarcastic.
He may also express his undying affection to Wardrox and his PS3, on the show. This is optional, however.

Now, on the topic of questions:

1: (Addressed to Tiff mostly, but others may answer.) Just how do you feel about the underlying sexism in not only games, but in many other forms of entertainment? That said, do you have any games that you think try to combat this? Any that do nothing about it?

2: (To be answered before or after Jim finishes the challenge, if he does so.) With many JRPGs out there, many including young main characters, why do you think that many of the obviously underage girls will have giant tits? Possible sexism, do you think?

3: Any person, real or fictional. Marry, Screw, or Kill. Go.

Sup guys and gal,
Do you think that the portrayal of male characters in games such as Gears of War and Army of Two can be called sexist?

Everybody talks about how female characters can be portrayed poorly and label it (with good justification) as sexism. However when a male character is portrayed in this fashion, people mock the characters for being shallow but they do not mention sexism at all, although if most men had a good hard look at the character's portrayal they would find it demeaning, stereotyping men as nothing more than grunting apes who like to kill things.

What are your thoughts?

One of the ways you can beat "The End" in Metal Gear Solid 3 is to put your PS2's System Clock forward a week, and have "The End" die of old age.
