Quantcast

I'm angrily trying to reinstall all the stuff on my computer after an ugly reformat, while simultaneously trying to get Stamps.com to cancel my ridiculous 4-week trial for their useless service.

Do not use Stamps.com under any circumstances. Or if you do, stick with it for life because there's sure as hell no easy way to cancel whatever BS you sign up for. Playing Debussy repeatedly while I'm on hold does not reduce my rage in the slightest.

Anyway, we're talking about sexism, layoffs, and other assorted stuff. Give us your questions, best one gets $25. Sonnet theme is "Web 3.0," as explained by Tiff.

now that (apparently and hopefully) the solid part of the metal gear solid series is over, where do you think the series will go next?

more acid type games? prequels? remakes? the story of frank the happy go lucky cyborg ninja?

Sonnet time yo.

Web Three.Oh

As the internet evolves one can look
at the world of web 2 and simply know,
forever changed are the likes of Facebook.
One must heed the call of web 3 point oh.

We’ll see lizards instead of loading bars,
of an ancient and 3-D persuasion,
that slowly take form with their mouths ajar
to scream at us quite loudly, CONNECTION!

Text and gifs will all seemingly jump out
and float around our heads without sheet.
It will be unreadable but we’ll shout,
“That fire gif is mega freakin sweet.”

But even with this new entertainment,
We’ll all still be obsessed with… ACHIEVEMENT!

also, (i wrote a silly little blog about this eariler but,)

with the release of so many 4th installments of classic movie franchises with now old protagonists (die hard, rambo, indiana jones, along with more on the way)
do you think that kojima making snake look old was a slight (VERY slight) jab at those particular franchises?

Ok I´ve asked this on the last podcastle (the one that´s not up yet), but I don´t know if it has actually been answered, so I´ll post it once more:

I´ve noticed that some hardcore gamers seem to fear the causal gamers as somekind of a corrupting element that is about to destroy the artistic character of videogames.
Why do you think this is happening?
In my opinion this is as ridicolus, as a cineast bitching about blockbusters destroying the artistic charcater of movies.

With Scalpello's comments regarding women & video games, its become more apparent that more and more gamers are getting less tolerant of sexism in the video game industry and as a whole, but still continue to make jokes in a sexist manner, which seems tolerable to an extent. To me, its become an issue of whats acceptable and what's not in terms of a joke, so what do you think is the fine line regarding sexism in the gaming industry and as a whole? Like, are kitchen & sandwich jokes acceptable while 'girls don't play games' jokes aren't?

A Sonnet:

The webcam fumbles in my hand,
My penis quivers in the night,
I film my throbbing pulsing gland.
My panties stretch and feel so tight.

I'm wearing knickers for you all,
And wanking while I cry,
This grotesque scene's due in the Fall
But people wonder why.

On another URL,
A monkey fucks a butcher's son,
The Internet has gone to Hell,
A lemur's fucked at point of gun.

This is what the 'net's become,
A shining beacon of perversion,
Web 3.0 will make you come,
But shudder and shake with total aversion.

MySpace is now MyFuckingHemroid
LiveJournal is a blog of all things penile,
Even Destructoid has become DeFuckToid
Let's never speak of Wikipedophile.

Web 3.0 is all things porn,
The natural way that all things go,
They'll film you first blowy before you are born,
And that's the tale of 3.0

Oh wait, what is this animated crow?
He's pecking out my eyes, this site is bad!
I wish the web had not gone 3.0!

Every time I get viagra spam,
A cock pops out and pokes me in the eye.
My eardrums almost bleed from Myspace jams,
A wonder I have not already died.

But now I'm more connected than before,
To people I have met on blogocubes.
In fact I'm so connected that I whore
Myself; just stick my dick up in them tubes.

The web is warping everything I see;
Maybe I should lay off the LSD.

Alright, more Blake questions.

1: Now, I'll admit it. I've never played a Metal Gear Solid game, for more that 10 minutes. However, I'm getting the Essential Collection for my Birthday. Which should I play first? Snake Eater to understand how it all started, or just start with MGS1, and go through normally? If you answer this question, just what makes the story work either way? Is it the fact that 3's a Prequel? Is it because the game shows Snake's heritage? How all the bad shit starts? What?

2: With all the layoffs at LucasArts, do you think there's any chance the company will cancel any games that have been prematurely revealed?

3: Now that the Final MGS game is on it's way soon, do you have any expectations? Any hopes?

4: Now that we know COD5 will bring us back to Great War II, are you disappointed? Would you rather have the game be set in the present, like 4?

5: There is no 5th question, to celebrate MGS4's release. Yayyyyyyyyyyyyy....!

What's the fucking deal with Jade Raymond? She seems to have disappeared off the face of the planet, but if you're going to talk aobut sexism in the industry, I think she's still relevant. If she had been a man, there would have bee na lot less people questioning whether or not she was just a PR head and not actually a producer. What's a girl gotta do to be taken seriously in a production position?

I just started playing Bioshock on Friday, and I when I reached the part where you were you were first given the choice to either harvest the Little Sister, and let them die, or rescue them. I knew that I should kill her for the Adam, but I couldn't bring myself to do it, and ended up exorcising her despite the fact that it would impede my progress in the game. Have any of you guys encountered a similar scenario to this, in which you find an action in a game to morally reprehensible to commit, or am I just a complete tool for falling for Dr. Tennanbaum's guilt trip?

Also, since Retroforcego! is on hiatus, can I post my cute animal pictures here instead?

Web 3.0: Better living thru holographic dinosaurs

With virtual reality helmet
upon my head, I launch Web 3.0.
I hear a noble voice, “Hail friend, well met.”
A dinosaur with holographic glow,
dressed like a gentleman greets me with cheer.
A smoke machine turns on and then the air
is filled with mystery. I now can hear
that in the distance trumpets sound fanfare.
I type out “myspace” and with each keystroke
there’s music and the font is courier.
I grant a friend request and through the smoke,
bright lasers make my vision blurrier.
The holo-dino shouts, “CONNECTION!!! I’ve….
I’ve never seen such awesomeness… HIGH FIVE!!!”

Question for Anthony:

I was shocked when I saw your review for the Bourne Conspiracy. Reading the text, the game sounded like it could be somewhere around a six or seven. Heck, I thought the graphics alone would give the game at least a three or four on their own. But it occurred to me at that point that what I was thinking didn't make a whole lot of sense and was pretty inconsistent with other entertainment media. When was the last time someone recommended a book to you because of its awesome cover? Has someone ever suggested that you listen to Cradle of Filth because of their instrumentation?

I don't think I'm articulating this very well, but my question is this: Why does the videogames enthusiast industry, by and large, incorporate merit badges into their reviews? I’m completely accustomed to seeing terrible games receiving better-than-deserved scores based on how good their graphics are, or how strong the musical score is, or how fluid the animation, or whatever, even if they’re virtually unplayable (see: Lair).

Do you think it’s a problem in this industry? Am I totally off the mark here?

there's been several console games that have been turned into full-fledged arcade titles (mario kart, silent hill, half-life 2)

ok. on sexism:

does anyone else feel that peach's final smash in brawl (where she uses her girlish nature to put all other players, mostly male, asleep) is sexist?

also, who or what is the most sexist character in games, or game in general, and who do you feel is an extremely positive role model?

The ESRB doesn't rate the online portion of games. Do you think that the rascism, homophobia and general douche baggery frequently encountered during online play of games like COD4 or Halo would be enough to give those games an AO rating?

Do you think that exposure to this verbal abuse, etc. is potentially more harmful to players than the violent game content?

What could Sony and Microsoft, who both claim they won't allow AO content(Manhunt 2) on thier consoles, do about it? Is Nintendo's friend code/ no voice support policy the only solution?

On sexism in games:

Do you believe that, in recent years, that there have been more or less sexism in video games and video game culture?

As I see, there is somewhat of a balance between a 'Male > Female' (RE4) or 'Male = Female'(fighting games, Half Life 2) game. And, on the slight occasion, 'Female > Male' games, Tomb Raider for example. Then of course there are some games that use sex as a stupid bonus (BMXXX)

Even with all the recent heroines, do you think that there is still a male dominated mentality in the video games industry and culture? Should games like the last Leisure Suit Larry, Playboy Mansion, The Guy Game, etc be continued to be made?

I don't know if this is old news but i was kinda horrified to find out neopets was owned by Scientology. Now I don't use the neopets website but I was looking forward to the Puzzle quest game thinking I could just imagine the neopets as juts a weird skin that I would ignore.

As much as I loved puzzle quest I don't think I could bring myself to buy something which funds Scientology.

So am I completely over reacting or are any of you as uncomfortable with this as I am?

I'd like to ask you guys about your thoughts on music in videogames. I can think of a few shining examples of how music should be done in games (Portal, HL2, Bioshock), but it seems that most other games really just regard the music as just a last minute element to be added to the background.
Films use their story, imagery AND their music in equal parts to bring the viewer deeper into the experience, but you rarely see games take advantage of musics power to enhance the players emotional involvement in the game.
Do you think that games will actually start to take music seriously, or will we be stuck with the same old background filler that's just there because it has to be?

This is I guess related to sexism:

With the rise of women playing video games companies are trying to make games that "target" women and girls. I remember being a 10 year old girl and I can tell you that the kind of games being marketed to ten-year old girls now would NEVER have interested me then.

Do you think these games actually gain more female gamers, particularly the ones marketed towards little girls? Do you think it's a good thing or a bad thing? Do you think these games will make them continue playing video games when they're older?

Ive watched the commercials for some video games that get advertised during kid's shows and it really seems like a "girl game" versus "boy game" mentality. I know there are toys geared towards girls more than boys too, but I never feel like the video games themselves ever reach the gender neutral category. There are however plenty of toys out there that can appeal to both boys and girls, like boardgames to name one example.

Will these people ever get it?
