No Metal Gear re-enactments this week, I'm afraid; it's back to the usual, alternately crude and intelligent discussions that Podtoid aspires to offer on a weekly basis.
This week will basically just be a sort of random news catch-up week; whatever stories fell through the cracks since we've been off the air will be discussed (assuming we remember and/or care about them), and we'll try to restrain ourselves from talking about GTA IV the entire time.
Since we're going to be recording such a scattershot episode, we need a buttload of reader questions: you can ask about literally anything gaming-related, and so long as it's interesting and we have time and energy, it'll be discussed. Best question will net the person who asked it $25 large. Which is cool.
Also, Colin's Bear Animation is the greatest video ever created by anyone. Ever.

Now that I got that out of my system, a serious question:
When companies don't make sequels to our favorite games, fanboys complain because they rather play sequels than enjoy, you know, original games. Then when companies release sequels to appease fans, they get attacked for whoring out franchises. Is it possible for companies to reach an equilibrium, or does the old saying "you can't please everybody" still ring true?

Coupled with this there are rumours, albeit far-out rumours, of EA releasing their own console as well. P
ersonally, i doubt this would ever happen but for the sake of pondering, do you think they could do it and would they succeed? I understand releasing a console is a huge investment and very risky.
04/30/2008 17:30
So do you think in the next gen the manufactures will go back to 1 version or are they always going to have a gimped version just so they can go look our console is under £200.

We've seen ragdoll and other mixed animations in games now for some time, when the first game did it, it was innovative. Is it now? Well, not as much, but GTA4 takes those physics and animations and Euphoria engine to make something that feels new. Awesome. But my question is, does a game HAVE to be innovative to really hold its own? Or can a game just utilize already existing features and functions in a crafty new way, to really entice people to play it? Or can a game just be really well made while sticking to so many old gameplay stigmas for people to love it?
One can easily talk about HALF LIFE 2 for hours, on how much it did different in the FPS genre. Its graphics, its storytelling, its character development, its ongoing plotline..etc. But does a gamer really have to have such new innovations to enjoy a new game these days? I'm probably gonna write this up as a Clog later, but I want to know what you 'tw@'s think.

For example, could they "GTA" the Half-Life world, and still have as fascinating a gameplay/"living world" experience as GTA is?
I'll say that in the instance of games like True Crime and CrackDown, where you have the "open-world" but are on the side of law enforcement, there hasn't been a game on the same scale as GTAIV that plays with that sort of character.

I think reviews, especially for games surrounded by so much hype should have a grace period before a review is written. Otherwise it's like having an "amazing" one night stand only to realize you just woke up next to Barbra Streisand. Thoughts?

I've been playing through RE4 again and it got me thinking. I love the RE series, but there are some I absolutely hate. Example, RE:0 and Resi Outbreak file 2. So my question is this, what is your favorite series and what is your least favorite game from that series?
Also, What is your favorite videogame character and what character is the one you most despise?
04/30/2008 19:16
So how goddamned awesome is Persona 3 and FES?

It's pretty much agreed that Half Life 1 and 2 are both revolutionary games, in every category, with usually an emphasis on story. Now, I've played through all of Half Life 1, and about 3/4 of Half Life 2, and I begin to wonder where is all of this overall amazement has come from, gameplay and level design aside. Get from point A to point B, some crazy shit happens, now you're fucked in some way or another...get from point B to point C.
In contrast to this, though, I do believe that the way it conveys the story is very innovative-it does make you more engrossed, indeed, which would make an illusion of a good story. If you had to put together the key plot points together in a chain, it would be pretty flat except a little bit at the middle, some more thrown in here and there, and at the end a big holy crap twist here and there for climatic measure.
In comparison, what does the Half Life saga do better: a bare bones powerful story of a young scientist getting fucked over by life, or telling it in such a way that it feels like YOU are a fucked over scientist, thus making the story seem better?

Anyways, I suppose I will put up an actual question. After reading the preview to the 50 Cent game, my head nearly exploded. The plot is so obscene that it borders on offensive, not just to the current state of the world, but to my ideas of what a big budget game should be. However, it seems that more and more big budget games are diverting attention from a quality story and decent game play in a single player mode for more sensationalism or online play. There are still a large number of big budget games with great game play mechanic and story, but I still see what I feel is a negative trend growing larger and larger in the industry. How do you guys feel about this?
Or am I just crazy?
In addition, I simply add this:

Do you really think they can power down Superman enough to put him in DC vs MK?
What game do you wish would come out on XBLA/WII VC/PSN that hasn't been announced?

This question came to mind shortly after my girlfriend refused once again to even attempt playing Portal (she is a gamer, though a "casual" one).
