If you only listen to one Podtoid episode ever, make it this one. We put slightly more work into it than usual. You'll have to listen to the actual episode to find out what's special about it, but let's just say that if you were in the pre-show post requesting that Jim Sterling do more impressions of Solid Snake, your wish has been granted.
And then some.
This week, Tiff "Gargantuan Rattlesnake" Chow, Jim "Artificial Donkey" Sterling, Aaron "Energizing Salamander" Linde and myself, Genius Grasshopper, talk about our favoritest videogame series involving bipedal robots and eyepatch-wearing badasses, Metal Gear Solid. Spoilers ensue for all three games in the series.
Topics of discussion included:
-A sonnet from Brilliam
-A surveillance camera??!!??
-Tiff Chow: loves boxes, hates level 5 keycards
-Meryl??!!??
-Defending Raiden
-A Hind D??!!??
-We want more Big Boss, sort of
-Metal Gear??!!??
This week, Arrested Developer won the $25. I'm really, really, really sorry that we didn't get time to ask more reader questions, but Podtoid records pretty late and Jim had to keep slapping himself in the face to stay awake. Anyway, Arrested, put yo' email in the comments and we'll drop you a line.
So good.

On RFGO, you said "If you only listen to one episode of Podtoid this week..."
wakka, wakka, wakka.
also
METAL GEAR!??!!??!?!?!??!
I still fucking love the special elements though. :-)
If you play your cards right and refuse to take on responsibility like I do, you may one day be in a state of Arrested Development just like me. Who needs real life experience when you've got games?
To nerd out for a moment: Aaron slightly glosses over that the reason Raiden and Solidus battle at the end (spoilers) is that Solidus believes the way to track down the patriots is through Raiden's Nanomachines.
For the ending, I might be totally wrong but S3 is revealed to stand for Selection for Societal Sanity and they are successful in covering up why no one seems to mind that a gigantic fucking robot monster has crashed into NYC. In other words: Solidus utterly failed.
Is this even remotely true?
But I thought the virus Emma installed in GW disrupted that too, or something. Fuck. So many double- and triple-crosses that I have no fucking idea what the fuck.
Still love that ending, though.
and I love the constant reference to 24. didn't MGS predate the hit fox show? so its kind of a worthless reference. I mean I know Tiff hadn't played it until last week or whatever but somebody should have said that this melodrama predated that melodrama.
also gotta love the "STFU Chad" at the end...brilliant
You're right about the Solidus/Raiden fight, but that isn't really what S3 is. It basically just controls the information that is released to the public so the Patriots can control what people perceive as important and cover up things they don't want people to know.
It doesn't really straight up "brainwash" people. We don't really know how they reacted to Arsenal crashing into Manhattan because the game ends.
And THAT is why I fucking hate the ending of MGS2.
I don't see how it's an entirely worthless reference, just a contextual means of comparison to something that I'm familiar with that exists within the same planes of Western-stle action/drama dripping with machismo. Given the fact that I barely dipped my toes into the game, my understanding of what MGS 'is' was more or less extracted via comparison. *shrug*
lolz
Your sonnet was the cat's pajamas, by the way.
Revolver Ocelot - "Hey guys, check out these wicked pokemon cards"
Rev/Chad ending was AMAZING!
Also, someone needs to defend MGS2's ending. I'm not sure if you guys know, since you didn't mention it on the podcast, but MGS2 ending was drastically changed last minute. Originally Arsenal gear was supposed to crash into the Statue of Liberty and the World Trade Center and unfortunately for Konami the game went gold about 1 week before September 11th. So Konami went back ripped out tons of codec conversations and got rid of the WTC from the plot completely. In the end the game would have still been pretty out there but taking a sizeable chunk out of the last hour of your game is bound to not help clarity.
If anyone is interested there is an interesting plot analysis with some interesting theories.
It takes after Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake, where you needed to check the manual to decode a morse code.
Happy 50th. Great show.
AMAAAAAAAZIIIIIIIIINNNGGGGG!!!!!!
The gay snake would've been interesting. If the love on the battlefield thing had just been filled with innuendos, it may have been passable.
"I'll love your battlefield!"
Better than that obviously.
All in all though, thanks for the entertaining show I love all of Metal Gear and appreciate the work you guys put in to this site for a gaming fanboy like me :) Happy 50 shows, cheers!
"STFU Chad Concelmo" was a stroke of pure genius. Jim's character voices were amazing as hell too.
In conclusion: Amaaazing!
