PODTOID

Podtoid 50 FINALLY records tonight; it's about Metal Gear Solid
Reverend Anthony

FIrstly, the above video contains the best non-remixed rendition of the MGS2 theme I've ever heard.

Secondly, after what feels like months we're finally ready to record Podtoid's 50th episode tonight at 7pm EST. There will be laughter, discussion, and given the fact that 3/4 of the cast loves Metal Gear Solid more than their own family, probably a lot of nerdy circle-jerking.

There will also be some neat additional stuff you won't get to hear until tomorrow.

But anyway, we need questions: if you asked some Solid-related questions of RFGO! this Sunday and didn't get them answered, then now is the time to throw those out. Any and everything related to the MGS series is up for grabs (except for "David Hayter, will you marry me" because I already have dibs on that one).

As always, the best question nabs the winner $25, so hit the comments and start askin', already.

I got a question. It's a two parter. First, who is you favorite MG or MGS boss and why and secondly, who is your least favorite boss and why.

Looking forward to the show.

What is the best boss in the MGS series?

Also do you think MGS4 will bring a satifactory conclusion to the unfinished stories of the MGS universe?

If you had to choose between Tanya Byron or Nicole Wiebe, who would you choose?

Right, question. Do you think the series would've had the success its had without introducing the Soliton Radar System in MGS1?

question: " What was your initial thought the very first time you heard snake explain how he gets cigarettes with him on his missions? "

I saw it the first time in the PSX-version of the game ( also my first metal gear game... ), I was like "Wooooooooooow this dude is one badass-adicted smoker..." then I went to get my brother ( also an avid smoker ) and restarted the scene, then we both realised that we were pussies for smugling joints in our bathing-pants into the pool at center-parcs... (to smoke in the outside part of the wild-water-run )

What do you consider the greatest innovations to the series brought forward from either MGS 2 or 3? I personally think its a tie between CQC or the third person behind the back camera BUT THATS JUST ME
Reaprar's Avatar
I'm just getting into the metal gear series, so I'm generally about to spoil everything by listening to this, playing metal gear solid as I type this.

Anyway, my question is, if there was any possible way to make snake more of a badass, what would it be?
Dexter345's Avatar
I don't have a question, I just want to hear Jim do the Solid Snake voice.

Question:

How big of an impact do you think MGS4 is going to make on the gaming industry as we know it? If so, what part of the industry (story driven games, gun play, sneaking, etc) is going to feel it the most? Is this game more on the terms of revolutionary, or more as an enhancer to the already great genre?
wardrox's Avatar
Would you wear this t-shirt?

Also, what are your thoughts on Metal Gear Online? Regardless of the fact they fucked up the beta, should it ever have been made? Lot's of games do fine without multiplayer (BioShock) and lot's of games are all right, but then have shitty-ass multiplayer tacked on which brings the whole game down a notch (Condemned 2).

Fuck Jim.
Brian Keljore's Avatar
With Kojima's insane drive and tendency to make games not up to his own insanely high standards, do you think that he'll make another MGS related game? He's already expressed his feelings about MGS4, do you think that will factor in? I suppose these questions are better left until we all know how MGS4 goes, but I can't help but wonder.
Mandril's Avatar
Hideo Kojima has mentioned he'd like to work on Zone of the Enders 3 or an entirely new project next. If he starts a new IP, what genre/sort of game would you like this to be?
Passionate Styos's Avatar
The Metal Gear series is one of my favorites in gaming, I've spent a lot of time with Kojima's games.

It's been more than 20 years of MG, and they keep adding more story excellence in each game. But there is something else. Do you think the series is more well known because of the gameplay or more because of the story? Also, which one do you think it should develop more? The gameplay or the story? If there is anything else you could add to the series, what would it be?
manasteel88's Avatar
Since Kojima has said this will be his last MGS game do you think that he's got any legs to stand on for a new IP? In my opinion he isnt that well known outside of the Metal Gears

Did you find Big Boss to be a sympathetic character before playing Snake Eater?

Even though big boss was killed in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, is there any chance they will bring him back to life in MGS4?

Would they include an old person love scene (mayonnaise optional) between Big Boss and Eva in which you'd have to balance the sixaxis precisely or Big Boss breaks a hip?

Was Otacon having sex with his sister?

More annoying: MGS controls or Rose in MGS2?

Meryl or Eva?

Does Jim refer to his genetals as European Extreme?
Cenobia's Avatar
How would you feel if Raiden was the main character in the next Metal Gear series (being as solid ends with 4 and assuming they continue making Metal Gear games)?

Since he looks badass I was wondering if they might make a spinoff series or something (assuming he doesn't get capped by the end).
Spartacus's Avatar
Does anyone else go into first-person view at the part in MGS2 where the guard pees off the oil rig, and just sit there being peed upon?

Also, give ArrestedDeveloper the money.

Hey guys, I'd like to know what your favorite single song is from any of the Solids, and also what game you think has the best overall sound track.

It's hard for me, I don't know if I can consider my favorite song part of the game.
Namely because I've never played through 2. But there is a song on the soundtrack called "Can't Say Goodbye to Yesterday" by one of my favorite artists.
My favorite overall soundtrack is definitely 3. The music fits the style of the game so perfectly.

1) What are your opinions on love blossoming on a battlefield?

2) WTF is up with crotch grabbing Raiden, and do you think we'll get a repeat in NGS4?

3) What do you think about the fact that the meat of the Metal Gear Solid story is told through juicy, post credit stingers and events that the user takes no active part in? I'm thinking President Solidus, the true nature of the Patriots, Snake diving after a Metal Gear, Ocelot/Liquid jumping in here and there to talkk witty/crazy smack talk nonsense, etc

4) Zone of Enders. Do you think there's any actual connection between MGS and ZOE, or does that just completely exist just in the realm of fanfiction and design coincidences? (cockpit crotch, mechs with super weapons built into them, etc) Is Kojima crazy enough to have built the connection into the last game of the MGS series, or am I just seeing black zombies? (ie arguable interpretation of similarity of which weak to no statement of original artist intent has no tangible bearing on the argument)

5) A Hind D?

Spoilers for MGS

MGS was the first game where I suffered real gaming disconnect, I figured out the Metal Gear wasn't operational yet but Snake didn't, I was very reluctant to go on as I knew it would fuck over the world, but had to to see the rest of the game.
Does the fact that the story is non-interactive detract from the game for you guys? I know it did for me and even though I'd like to, I haven't been back to an MGS game since.

Dr Mike's Avatar
Do you like or even care that Kojima tends to fill in character back story and plot in non-chronological order?

Snake Eater and Portable Ops develops Big Boss as the sympathetic character. Similarly, both games give more context as to the nature of The Patriots and who are the (possible) faces behind the name.

Conspiracy theory:
Major Zero ("the man with the same code name as Null") is strongly hinted at in portable ops (spoilers) to be one of the founders of The Patriots. Seems odd that he could be an important role yet only now are we given the clues to figure out who these people that we've been told about are.

How much of MGS's legacy is based on what it is and not on what we remember it to be? Point being, none of the games have really changed the face of gaming. It's a fantastic series, it's a fun series, but it's also a jankily controlled, convoluted story series.

Should I not listen to this episode? I haven't actually finished MGS3 yet. I just got to the base at the end and all, but it's so hard to play.

I mean seriously, the game is hilarious and has good boss fights and awesomeness... but the gameplay seems like UTTER SHIT, even with the free camera in Subsistence. I felt like the gameplay really did not update enough to go with the fact enemy soldiers could now see further than five feet in front of their face. That, and the largely outdoor environments just weren't doing the gameplay mechanics largely unchanged since MGS1 any favours.

And god... the fucking CQC system is the dumbest thing I've ever attempted to use in my life. I quickly gave up on it entirely and just stuck with silenced pistols. The analog feature of the PS2 buttons is one the worst things ever on a controller, it's just 99% of games don't use it.

That said, I'm still very excited for MGS4, I really believe the controls will finally be cleared up, and the active camo sounds to functionally solve the retardation of the camo system from MGS3.

Since there's been just so much love for MGS on the podtoid, how would you say it compares to other multi- system/generation defining series such as GTA, Final Fantasy, Halo or something like Warcraft? Is its identity shaped because of its system or vice versa?

Also, is all of this hinting a sign that David Hader himself is gonna be on the show or something?
Spartacus's Avatar
@ Kapkomi - Snake Eater is the regular game, and Subsistence is the "special edition" of sorts. It has a movable camera and a bonus disc with Metal Gear and Metal Gear II and some minigame. If you haven't played it, definitely get Subsistence.

Also, METAL GEAR AWESOME.

And how do you feel on the subject of the game getting an -E- rating since the majority of MGS games have been mostly -M- rated, could nintendo could have played a role in this or could there have been obvious tech. limitations?

I've got a question: To what effect did Kojima mean to get across in regards to his displeasing view of MGS4, and it's subsequent reveal to the public, in your guys' opinions?

I mean, he stated it openly and honestly, which is respectable, but he didn't pinpoint any detriments exactly.

No, they have nothing to do with each other. Of course. It's s so obvious.

They're all just best-selling games that became the cornerstones of their developers and their respective platforms and have become synonomous with their systems.

I'm so very wrong. Just on so many levels.

I know that it is probably too late for the show, but maybe somebody else can answer this question for me....

In Metal Gear Solid's briefing video, Snake's hair is clearly blonde and they discuss having to change his hair because... he looks too much like Liquid.

So if Big Boss in MGS3 is clearly brunette, and with Snake and Liquid and Solidus (with his white hair) his clones.... why does hair color not translate during cloning, but combat skill does?

My real concern is whether Kojima's geneticist can prevent me from getting high cholesterol and balding? I would gladly change my hair into a mullet for these things.

Did you, like me, on the bonus disc of Substance, "dive" real-time (panned the camera around since it's free and not fixed like in the game) into the cutscenes, particularly the Raiden being strapped to the metal bed in the Shadow Moses torture chamber, and then panned onto his genital area to find out that he doesn't have a penor, and is therefore in fact either non-sexual, or a girl?

If not, you should.

I'm not good at setting up questions but here it goes anyways...playing the MGS series I feel for what most of the bosses are trying to accomplish and when I killed ,for an example Vulcan Raven , i felt very sad to have killed such an honorable beast of a man. Have you ever felt this way toward any enemy in a game before? Which character do you sympathize with more and why?

Also, how incredible would a Metal Gear Solid game be on the DS? Do you believe it could be done? Maybe an add on to Ghost Babel?

Or...
Do you feel that the Patriots and most of the enemies like Liquid were justified in there cause? Could you see any of the characters having some of the same ideals as you (in other words, could you agree with their reasons?)

I know I'm really late with this question but I figure I'll try anyway. I’m a huge fan of the Metal Gear Solid series, but anytime I rave about the story and the characters my friends usually complain about the ridiculousness of it all. They’ve seen me play small sections of the games, and I’ve tried multiple times to explain the story and how it, despite its surface level absurdity, has depth. But, most of the time they disregard it as “too extreme.” But, in my mind this is kind of the point. For example with the Metal Gears (both rex and ray) we have what are essentially nuclear tanks, but they are given the shape of, and act like, monsters. They are a metaphoric representation of their nuclear capabilities. I’m not saying every little thing in an MGS game represents something bigger, or that everything links back to some metaphoric bullshit, but I am saying that a lot of it does. I may be fucking crazy but I think the realistic story mixed with the hints of weird sci fi/fantasy elements makes for a fantastically deep and fun game. Wow I wrote more then I wanted to so I guess I should stop rambling and ask a damn question.

So I guess my question is this, do you think the exaggerated nature of the Metal Gear Solid series (vampires, mechs, and things of that sort) helps or hurts the games?

Veck. Chronologically it goes:

MGS3 -> Portable Ops -> Metal Gear -> Metal Gear 2 -> MGS -> MGS2

I would start with the Metal Gear Solid trilogy as it is an evolution in the 3D controls and story telling.

Metal Gear Solid was the first game i played on PSX and i was blown away by how Kojima kept finding ways to poke at you from the other side of the screen. for example, the Psycho Mantis battle, or having to find Meryl's codec frequency on the back of the box. i'd never experienced anything like that in gaming before and it blew my mind.
