Tus ojos son como la luna. Tu cara es como un perro.

This week we ("we" being the usual suspects -- Sterling, Chow, Linde and myself) be talking about a whole assload of random news-related stuff, as we are wont to do. Stuff about Spitzer, Brawl, swag, and the Holocaust will probably be discussed in some form or another.

As always, we need reader questions: ideally, reader questions which have nothing to do with any of the aforementioned subjects. This is a random, scattershot week, so we'd like random, scattershot (but still relevant and thought-provoking) questions.

This is basically a much nicer way of asking you not to ask nothing but Brawl-related questions.

Anyway, best question gets $25, etcetera etcetera. I'm going to get back to writing my review of the next Sam and Max episode while watching the Sam and Max animated series DVD and doing all number of other things related to Sam and Max.

The other day I was talking with my sister and I mentioned that I believe games are art. I thought she might try to object ar state that I was wrong, but suprisingly she agreed with me!

This made me wonder, we are always thinking about wether or not games are art but what do you think people on the outside believe? To them are games just things, "those kids do." or do they think games are art.

Here's one I'm just going to toss out.

Name the best book/movie/comic book story that can be adapted into a game and how would you make it not suck. (Like all movie adaptations do and how comic adaptations are just arcade beat-em-ups with awful stories)

is the hype of video games really good or deathly bad, or both?will it keep increasing as the years go on?and what is everybody's choice of the most hyped game thus far, good and bad? my choice for bad goes to the 'the bouncer" and my choice for best hyped is kotor. yeah i said it. i love kotor and the hype it built was awesome. and also #1_in_the_hood_G!!

Also, do you think if microsoft or sony made a brawl-esque game with characters from their respective franchises do you think they'd be succesful are there even enough good characters for a game lie that?

What does Jim think about the new UK budget announced today? Does he fear the cost of the extra 55p tax on spirits?

Also, Bioshock 2, yey or ney?
digtastik's Avatar
@MaxVest
Settop gaming existed in the Sega Channel(Scientific Atlanta) but didn't take off. Stay in a hotel lately? Many places allow you to play games from your room using the same idea.

Also, I think I remember Pace buying rights to Sega's Dreamcast hardware and there being a rumored dreamcast settop from them that never saw the light of day.
wardrox's Avatar
Also, if Jim says anything nice about Brawl, he is not getting head from me on Sunday.
MaxVest's Avatar
@digtastik: Sure, there have been many other efforts besides the ones you mentioned too. But when will it be a viable alternative to buying a new console? Right now for the price of four nights in a hotel room playing N64 games, you can obtain a pretty good console. I think the value equation is still on the side of the console manufacturers.
luzer7072's Avatar
Can I add to Surf314's question? Last week, you mentioned Hotel Dusk as a good idea for a movie adaption (Was it Linde?). I agree, but how would you go about making if you were put in charge? There's a lot of parts that would translate badly to the big screen, but what theme from the game would you run with?
Passionate Styos's Avatar
Hmm, I think the question would be "What do you think of Nintendo with the position it has now in the industry since it's always playing it safe? In words, why are they sucking so much lately?"

Also, your Spanish is not so broken.
digtastik's Avatar
@MaxVest
I imagine that when IPTV hits and every home has access to a larger data pipe it would be viable, but at that point, MS and Sony will likely be the settop provider.. isn't what they are positioning themselves for with their newer platforms anyway? Good question; it got me thinking.

Here's a question guys,
have you played an awesome game but the main character (or party character for RPGs) is just total fail? I mean a character so bad that the game would be infinitely better without that character's inclusion?

Discuss,
Also would a classic style Sam & Max game on the DS rock?

I own a PS3 and a 360 but not a Wii because when I purchase a console I look for a system that will be more than just a console that can provide excellent drinking games, i.e. competitive gaming is serious business.
Will Brawl provide a competitive scene equal to that of Melee, or will the truly hardcore continue to play Melee similarly to how competitive gaming has stuck with CS 1.6 instead of upgrading to CS:Source?

I HAVE A FEW MEANINGFUL QUESTIONS.

1) Since Wiifit comes out early here, will Jim be reviewing it? If so, I want videos.

2) If Nintendo were to create a better online service - more like Xbox live, but in Nintendos own, kid-friendly style, would you be supportive?

3) Thoughts on the 360 Bru-Ray addon?

5) Do you believe that that the SSE in brawl, is just a new kirby game? the levels are very similar and infact, the final game has the exact same attack patterns from MARX in Kirby super star, brawl screams unoriginality to me, yet I'll still buy it. ... Why do people do that too?

6) There is no 4.

With the ever increasing cost of making games, and the ever increasing risk that a game will not make a decent profit for the company who made it, do you think innovation in games will start to completely disappear (i.e. Namco not taking a risk on Katamari Darmacy), or do you think publishers might start looking to independent developers to find fresh concepts, (i.e. like how Narbacular Drop became Portal)?

Before the xbox 360, I can only recall paying $49.99 for new games. Now the current trend is $59.99 for current gen games. Given the current state of the economy, in what some are calling a period of stagflation (which is in short prices inflate and bad things happening) do you think the price of new games will go up in the near future? If not this, what will? The next generation of consoles? How much do you think gamers are willing to pay for certain games before they stop (is rock band worth it)?

My opinion is still very uneven but id like to know what you think.

I know Anthony is a pretty big fan of indie games (I had the pleasure of playing World of Goo on his laptop in San Francisco), but there seems to be sentiment in the darkest reaches of the Internet that indie games are inherently better than "mainstream" games, since they can accurately convey an artistic vision, whereas big studio games get muddled not only by a large development team (too many cooks and so on), but also by the drive not to create something artistically relevant, but to create something explicitly to make money. Please comment on the longest run-on sentence I have ever written.
UglyPhil 's Avatar
How do you create fear in video games without it becoming irritating?

I liked Resident Evil on the Hamcube (the typo looked cool so I left it), but certain elements that were obviously designed to create fear just pissed me off. The saving method for instance, is stupid for various reasons. If you had been given a limited number of quicksaves, and an infinite number of safe-room saves, the game would have been much, much better, easier to pick up and more engaging. The control scheme, the cutscenes and the inventory were all guilty of the same thing.

I believe one good way to create fear is through illusion. I loved the beginning of Penumbra Overture because you had no weapons to speak of, and you had no idea what the monsters looked like or how they'd kill your, etc. Games like this take away elements that you're comfortable with, and that makes you uncertain.

Why do you believe video game companies (*Ahem Ubisoft) keep making pet sim games (Babyz, Catz, Dogz, Porcupinz, Polar Bearz, etc.)? Of course, some money is to be had, but to see production put into a game that is not exactly there for anything other than to look cute, why are resources being poured more into these games than others like Ass Creed?

When an upcoming game receives a massive amount of hype (e.g. Brawl), does that ruin the game for you once it's finally released, leaving you with a feeling of disappointment that the game didn't live up to the hype, or does it make the game better for you, allowing you to finally realize your dream of playing this game after all the hype surrounding it? Does it depend on whether the game lives up to its hype or not?
manasteel88's Avatar
do you honestly believe that games are having as big an impact on the movie industry as the MPAA are claiming? Did Halo really mess up Ben Stiller's Heartbreak Kid? Will GTA4 dash the dreams of Iron Man? Will the Iron Man Video Game hurt the Iron Man movie? Sit and ponder my questions!
BlackSunEmpire's Avatar
Why is the holocaust untouchable in videogaming??

Obviously movies and books have been allowed to portray it as they see fit, but it seems the general public (and some gamers) won't allow videogames to stray near it. Is it the 'interactive aspect' so touted by the 'violence are bad' videogame critics, or are we being babied as an industry yet again?? Or do you have another opinion on the matter??

I certainly dont personally see the difference in ideas expressed in what Luc is trying to do with his 'set in the same time as the holocaust' game and Pan's Labyrinth. Except for specifically mentioning WW2.

Please note, I do not think the Holocaust was good, I just accept it happened, and want to do more than ignore it for the rest of eternity

Aintitcool.com recently threw up an interview with George Miller, who is not only responsible for raping the upcoming Justice League movie, but is also the creator of Mad Max. In the interview, he mentioned that there were possible rumblings of a possible Mad Max videogame (possibly). This got me to thinking; cult movies tend to make decent games. Games like The Warriors and The Thing, though by no means perfect were worlds better than tripe like Jumper or Superman Returns. So what cult/B movie would you like to see translated to a videogame? My money goes to Escape from New York or Big Trouble in Little China (I'm a 80's Carpenter whore - so what?).

If 360 or PS3 wanted to make a series that would challenge the Smash Bros stranglehold over the casual-friendly uber-nerd-mashup fighter genre, who should they approach to do it? What franchises should they license for it? Remember, they don't need to stick o video games. They could, say, make it an epic mashup of, like JACK BAUER vs. MICHEL GONDRY'S STRING CREATURES vs. MEGAMAN vs. MIKE JONES, MIKE JONES vs. NOAM CHOMSKY, BEAT EM UP GUY GO FOR BROKE!
