Podtoid 140.5: Heavy Rain spoilertoid photo

We restrained ourselves from completely spoiling Heavy Rain in Monday's Podtoid so that we could discuss the story in greater detail in last night's very special EX+ Gaiden Alpha Bonus episode. You can find it here.

In it, we discuss MASSIVE HEAVY RAIN SPOILERS. Jim also does a Kevin Spacey impression at one point.

Additionally, there's a bit at the very end where right before signing off, Samit says, "well, it's a quarter to midnight." Adam cut the recording there, but we went on to decide that "It's a Quarter To Midnight" was the name of Samit's Nickelback cover band, and that the next time he's at an E3 party he has to do a karaoke version of "Hero."

That dude on the left looks like a cross between one of the Agents from the first Matrix (not Smith) and the default version of JC Denton.

You borked my brain with the idea that anyone would actually want to even make a Nickleback cover band. Nickleback sound so bad, they are basically their own bad cover band.

Fact: If you like Nickleback, then the world would be a better place if you jumped off of a bridge.

One of the greatest 45 minute rants I ever heard. Naturally I slept through the parts when they talked about what they liked.

I definitely enjoyed the game but agreed with pretty much everything discussed this week. Good stuff guys.

As for the sex scene though - you actually have the option to mack up your wife at the start of the game when she brings in the groceries, implying that Ethan is a bit of a horndog. If you do that and then snog Madison later in the game, it's still retarded, but it makes a bit more sense.

I failed to kill Shelby from the start of the game. For the record, the glass in the car does break, and there's an exterior shot of the air bubbles rising from the car. However, it immediately cuts to him walking out of the water and on to the beach.

After that I had him drive through a wall and get shot six times, only to appear in his office without a scratch on him.

I never took Ethan's blackouts to be literal scenes because of the haze, the lighting, and the fact that he's all alone. That's not where he is when he wakes up, it's what he sees while he's out. Right before Ethan has his first in-game blackout, he reads a newspaper about the killer, and that's why he sees the oragami in his hand.

Even if you skipped that, the paper is on his dresser downstairs so presumably he read it earlier.

Nicky, grill the shit out of him. Seriously. I have never seen anyone really put Cage under pressure and I want to see him defend himself. I don't want his utter destruction or anything but now that we've all got to play this thing that's, as he said, "Not even really a game anymore," I want to see him defend criticisms of a game so long the making.

I like Cage but I don't think I've ever seen anyone make him defend his claims. I'm curious how he'll rebuttle.

I don't agree with all of what hardrock says, but I see no difference between Molyneux and Cage. Other than the fact that Cage is attempting to make a new "genre" (he failed, but tried), and Molyneux is tricking people into thinking Fable is more than just an adventure game.

I love Cage. I've loved Cage since Farenheit. But that doesn't mean he shouldn't be put on the hotseat.

I don't know where you got that Molyneux stuff from. That's your imagination playin' tricks on you buddy.

Wellll there's the fact that Molyneux actually does create new genres of games, cough, cough, Populas, Magic Carpet, etc. and David Cage makes old school adventure point and click adventure games with Dragon Lair QTE controls and tries to tell everyone that what he's making isn't even really a game anymore.

About half-way through listening right now, and I have to say, as far as Madison looking shocked while hearing Shelby's name, I took it more as a "Holy shit, all this work and now I finally have a name", not a "Holy shit, I can't believe it was this person which I totally know and did not suspect to be the killer". And to Anthony's question of how she found his house, I assume phonebooks still exist in 2011. He is a PI, after all, not being in the phonebook would be a pretty bad business idea.

That's just how I felt about it, it's still a bit of a stretch, though.

The only way it could have had more enjoyable variety would be if Scott Shelby wasn't the only possible identity for the killer. It could be that this was Cage's intention all along but he didn't have time to see it through.

I've already posted twice so I'm just gonna make this quick as I can.

Plot holes and stunted character development are unforgivable but the unique experience I had with this game was vastly different from what I see out there, and the conversations I've had with people about this are more interesting than any I've had since the original Fallout.

While I'm still disgruntled about failing to kill Scott Shelby with neglect towards his quicktime events, my Scott Shelby simply isn't your Scott Shelby, and the same goes for the entire cast.

The people who write about the game often refer to event of the storyline like they couldn't be changed, but many of them can be. I read/listen to these and think "meat grinder? crane fight? motorcycle chase? Even my characters that lived to the endgame made different choices on their own when *not* controlled by the player, like appearing to Ethan unarmed instead of trying to kill him.

There are plot holes, but could it be that the right sequence of events eliminates all of them, and the only failure was tying the alternate sequences together, and not the overall plot? We might find that Madison really does have a purpose beyond naked journalism, but only if we know her intimately enough to make the right choices for her.

I enjoy this game a lot, so I was curious to what you guys were going to talk about in this special episode of heavy rain. I've been listening to many podcasts talk about this game but not spoil it so much. I was really confused to know that Scott Shelby was the Origami killer since it confused me until that scene came along and spoiled the surprise.

At the scene were Madison hear's the killer's name I honestly thought it was someone she knew (aka Ethan)

Shelby can't be killed while being drowned in the car. (I tried it but the cut scene automatically has him crawling out of the water.)
