Podtoid 137: Pixeljunk Gears of War photo

This week's episode has a pretty long Games of the Week segment (mainly because we spend a healthy portion of it talking about artgames), so be ready for that.

After the first half of the show, however, the regular Podtoid crew yaks about Sonic 4, EA's 2011 lineup, and some other stuff I can't remember at the moment.

You can listen to the show here or subscribe to us on iTunes.

BOOM

Also I wish I had a tail that I saw when I turned around, but only if it was sharp, pointy, phallic, and sprayed acid when severed (not the furry kind)

The artgames link does not compute.

I'm just teasing. I'm sure I'll probably like it, but I can see why someone wouldn't.

BOOOOM!!!

I enjoyed the talk about art games. Even though I agree more with Jim that you should get some enjoyment and walk away feeling good. If you feel needlessly frustrated or angry or bored once you're done due to the developer being "clever", personally I wouldn't personally consider that a "game". But whatever. I enjoy hearing different views on things.

And the Morrigan cosplayer is the hottest cosplayer. But the Link girls aren't bad.

I accidentally said personally twice in one sentence. Whoops.

Also, while I'm here, Brad do you only date large muscular Greek, Russian, and Austrian women or what? Who the fuck judges attractiveness in girls by their muscle mass index, man? That's fuckin' WEIRD.

Samit, don't lower the difficulty on gow2 you'll never get that sense of accomplishment of you do lower it for that section. You're right to play it on hard given you just got finished playing gow1. I did the same thing and it's so much more satisfying. Good luck.

And actually ME2 is not the only game to import saves from earlier games to change plot points. The Suikoden series did it as well.

Enjoyed this episode a lot, I've been listening to podtoid for awhile but wanted to weigh in on something for this episode as my first post. When you had your games as art discussion, it got me thinking. A lot of people want to over romanticize mediums, not to get insanely obscure but it is as you pointed out, some people accuse games as something that can't be art because it started out as a capitalist medium. They then point to things like literature, ignoring the fact that say the written word was originally in majority used to collate laws or record transactions. Where I am going with this is that practical technology is really the driving force behind the advent and evolution of a ton of mediums. I think accusing a medium or game of being purely hedonistic because it's original driving creative force is money or because it is or was created by generally practical people is bullshit. Not only is this patently unfair it also creates a schism between people by drawing a almost arbitrary line where by one has to ignore things like mechanics and general enjoyment in order to make this so called "art". Contemporarily it reminds me of the whole idea of "High Art" as applied to music when people refused to acknowledge anything but classically composed music as artistic. As to the people who think we need a huge clarity of terms on words as vague as "fun", this is a mastrabatory exercise, there is an entire arm of philosophy dedicated to clarity of terms and they don't even try and tackle shit as vague or subjective. I think the application of the term of "art or not art" at least in games should be judged by the visceral and emotional responses it evokes in the players.

P.S.
Obscure fact Bullshit (Don't bother to read....Seriously)
Citing this so I don't appear to pull things from thin air. Many of our largest selections and highest percentage of Linear B works are transactions and or "work order" type documents. Not to mention one of the most famous applications and reasons for further spread of writing, Hammarabi's Code of Law, definitely not art. History would be a great example of what the game medium is like in some ways. Early histories were often interpretive and or written in the form of poetry, then was it art , simply scholastic or enjoyablely veiled propaganda I.E (Caesar's History of the War in Gaul)? For the really annoying lets define the word "games", "fun" assholes, Google Wittgenstein even he hates you for getting this picky.

I agree that whichever Silent Hill you play first (1 vs 2) makes such an impression that it will be your favorite. Running through that crazy thick fog in 1 was awesome, even though it was probably put there for draw-distance limitations.
