Podtoid 127 records in, like, two hours photo

It's been so damn long since I've actually hosted an episode of Podtoid, I forgot what frigging time we start. Hence the late post.

But anyway, yeah: the regular cast will discuss Assassin's Creed II, the newly announced Prince of Persia game, and pretty much whatever questions managed to get asked between now and the time we record.

Which isn't very long.

So start asking.

Why don't you guys fire your reviews editor?

This is not a comment to complain about a review, but I'd like to hear a bit more of the rationale behind the lower-score Assassins Creed II review. I picked up the game early on, unfortunately just in time for my 360 to bork, so I'm sitting on it waiting for the repair. I like hearing negatives to a game, because it basically lets me zone those things out when I'm playing.

Do you think a game featuring Zombie Jesus and George Washington fighting Nazi Werewolves in the old west would be a great idea? Also, would a mini-game featuring the ghost of Martin Luther King Jr. feeding on the flesh of the white man sway your judgment of said game?

On Assassin's Creed II: What did you think of the historical content of the game? Did you learn something, or do some extra reading on Renaissance Italy afterward (even on Wikipedia)?

I'm doing my MA thesis on how historical video games are designed, so any ideas I can "borrow" for my research would be helpful.

wHy did you score ASS2 so low!? D: My parents only let me have on game for my birthday and I picked that one cause i thought it was the best game ever but then you say it's not and now I cannot enjoy this game at all. Now my dad is pissed off because I threw the game away because knowing that it is not uniformly praised as the greatest thing ever has made it unplayable. I emplore you too change your opinion for the sake of the world I have constructed in my mind. :) :)

If Brad is on the show I'd like to know what he thinks about Bayonetta. The game has you throwing a building at a dragon after it throws you and the building into the air and later has you suplexing said dragon. Is this game dragon enough for Brad?

Perhaps the controversy surrounding the "No Russian" level in Modern Warfare 2 has been beaten to death, but I was hoping to hear from the Podtoid cast in your initial MW2 discussion what other games have similar scenes or levels, in the sense that it's intended to elicit a strong and unconventional emotional response (for a video game)? Have other games performed this in a more efficient/powerful manner, or do you think MW2 has set the bar?

I'd like to hear some commentary about the disjunction between the claim of games as art, and the insistence on "rating" games in the numerical sense that is the industry standard. I don't recall seeing many "7.8" reviews for Damien Hirst's "For the Love of God," but I see a lot of 9s or 10s for Shadow of the Colossus.

Even when they're positive, I feel like these ratings are troublesome, espeically outside of the context of their release. Quantifying enjoyability is tricky. On the flip-side, it's also true that a lot of "art" in the traditional sense is and always has been "product" in the Walmart sense of the word. Give us history and art majors some meat to gnaw on.

Question about the future of Podtoid: Back in the Tiff era, you guys used to do the occasional themed shows about topics like Metal Gear Solid, King of Kong, Video Game Quotes, Indie Games, and so on. Now that the show has shifted towards news episodes every week, has that boat set sail, or has it just been accidentally left in the harbor, thus making re-boarding a possibility. (Metaphors!) While you've undoubtedly struck upon a winning formula, those episodes were great, and I'd love for some more :3

After having read the crapstorm that was the ACII comments, there was one topic that I wanted to ask all you guys about. When writing a review, should you base it on your opinions on the game, or the game's merits? Are their any instances when you should use the other approach?

Since it seems that listener questions got ignored for the most part during your absence, I'm a just copy pasta my post from last week free of charge, no added questions(third one reworded):

1st question: Any scenes in Modern Warfare 2 you found more disturbing than the No Russian level?

2nd question: What are you guyses favorite Left 4 Dead 2 primary and secondary weapon combinations? (ex: Ak-47 and Katana?, Shotgun and Magnum?)

3rd question(bit of a long one, sorry): You guys actually touched on this last week, but how has your criteria for a "top ten videogames list" been affected by the more recent games(released after 2000)? How dow you feel this represents the direction of the growth of videogames as an entertainment medium and as a beacon of artistic vision compared to earlier games?

I'm sorry, Jim scored a flawless victory on this one.

However, I would like to hear Jim discuss his review with the rest of the team, I'm quite interested to see a well thought out retort to his main gripes with the game without everyone screaming BIAS. Athough it'll probably be mentioned anyway, heh.

Okay, here's one. What do you all plan on getting people for christmas, gaming related-wise?

Relating to the list of the 50 best videogames of this decade:

What game released this decade do you feel embodies the potential of the medium in the future? In other words, what game do you guys feel has had the greatest impact on the media these last ten years, the most revolutionary ideals, and the type of ploys that could only ever be done in a videogame?

What game has set the medium apart from others, and shown that some things can only be done through the methods and immersion of games, and which would not have had the same effect in another form?

Assassin's Creed and it's sequel have both received positive feedback on their controls, even considered by some to be revolutionary. Though having played both, I feel as though the game takes control away from the player, but I couldn't figure out how. It wasn't until I finally picked up Shadow of The Colossus that I realized what that was: a button to grasp out and hold on. In SoC the feeling of holding down a button for dear life, just as the character hangs on for his, is a feeling unmatched by any game I have ever played. Anyway, my question is do you agree that Assassin's Creed would be more engaging a game had the controls reflected the difficulty of climbing?

Why do people get upset at a review score if it doesn't match the consensus of other sites or if it doesn't meet their expectations?

Do they even want a review then, or just an auto-generated score and message that confirms that getting this game is / was a great idea?

What do you feel creates a better co-op experience: The 'encircling danger' that Left 4 Dead(2) presents where you die if you go too far away from the group, or the kind of sports team with guns feeling that one gets from a game like Modern Warfare(2)where simple voice communication suffices to create a sense of unity?

oooookaaaayy

-Are there any games you think would make a good movie? ( Tf2 musical? Shit yeah.)

-What the fuck is Oscar Mike?

-When do you think graphics and photorealism are important to gameplay experience? Are they needed at all?

-What do you think about the growing market of crap peddled specifically to gamers? Like energy drinks specifically for gamers, and that sort of thing. When does it stop being useful and start becoming a pathetic attempt to create a new gaming problem and then fix it? ( 'Wear these special shoes to play DDR for maximum dancing ability' sort of stuff.)

-Do you think the pokemon franchise will ever come out with something legitimately new?I mean, heartgold and soulsilver? Are we ever going to get something besides a samey jrpg type thing in the pokemon universe?

-That new LFD demake looks sweet. What games do you think deserve a re/demake? (GOTCHA FOOOOORCE http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/Chainsawface/why-gotcha-force-is-the-best-third-person-shooter-ever-156439.phtml)

-What games would you like to see be made able to be modded?

-Are there any qualities or aspects of a game that will never be used, and can't be used, in any positive way for a game? Something that just makes every game that has it worse?

-Do the podtoiders read video game webcomics? If so, which are their favorite?

-Why do MMOs suck so much? I love online gaming, but nothing I play is ever good. FIX IT PODTOID.

K Im done

I just realized that I own about a dozen games I need to finish (partially because you assholes keep talking about how good some of them are). How do you guys deal with a backlog of games? Do you make schedules to play a few at a time, pound them out serially, or just say fuck it? When you do let them get away, how do you silence your guilty conscience?
