Podtoid 123 is tonight, ideally the last movie commentary photo

Podtoid is Destructoid.com's official news and discussion podcast.

I decided to type "duck motorcycle" into Google image search and I found that picture.

Evidently everyone on the Podtoid cast hates doing the movie commentaries now, so if we actually get around to polishing off Resident Evil we probably won't do any for quite a long time.

Whatever we do end up doing, however, we will need your listener questions. So ask them, already. What the hell are you waiting for.

I think Michelle Rodrigeuz's role in Resident Evil was actually written for a dude. Please keep that in mind.

Oh the commentaries aren't that bad and you know it.
Resident Evil will rekindle your love for them; I'm sure of it.

Anyway, here's my question for the whole crew: What's your favorite video game soundtrack? Licensed or non-licensed; doesn't matter. What are your thoughts on the place of music in video games in general?

Do you think we will ever play as the Nazis? It can be a alternate History FPS (if you like that sort of thing) or any other genre of gameplay.

Would it be a good idea to use a Splinter Cell/Stealth based game where you play as a nazi trying to escape Germany? More so, how about playing as Hilter himself. Always on the chase from both Allied and Russian forces.
How the primary idea would to be get out of Germany and escape to Argentina (like some think he did).
You could then advance the plot 10 years where you still would have a lush Argentina like eviroment and keep it up plot from Nazi Hunters.

Would it work? Or would we be quick to dismiss it?

A while ago, when discussing Six Days in Fallujah, Aaron Linde said that that his main problem with the game was that it sounded like it was shit and would be a horrible example to point to for games being able to effectively tackle modern day issues. How about Modern Warfare 2? Would that be an appropriate game to tackle the modern day issue of terrorism?

Also, Resident Evil movie. Zombies. Zom...Bees. Was Samit stung by a Zombee?

We all know that Metroid Prime is obviously not the Citizen Kane of video games, but do you think that Micheal Thompson had the right idea of looking at games that were already made, and trying to see which ones came close? If you had to pick, what games do you think could be called the-almost-but-not-quite-Citizen-Kane of video games? And do you think the terrorist scene in Modern Warfare 2 is a step in the right direction?

Gamers have become a huge market nowadays for a number of things, whether they be nifty glasses you wear to prevent gaming headaches or an energy drink made specifically for gaming. My question is, where do you draw the line of what might actually be useful for gamers, and what products are pointless attempts at appealing to the gamer community with a made up problem, i.e. a special pair of socks for playing dance dance revolution.

How does the crew think the infamous MW2 level would be received if the player was placed in the role of a civilian, running away and helping others to get away?
Do you think putting a player in a role like that would detract from whatever message they want to make?

(I'd like to hear it answered again after the game has been played, too, to see how the greater context affect's the crew's opinions)

We heard about Halloween with Prinny and the president, but what'd the rest of you get up to?

Do you think the flaws in Dragon Age and the mixed reaction will mean the end of that franchise? Could the next game be a better experience or will this be another case where the kinks become an inherent part of the series?

Could more games use dragons? (Yes) If Pacman were riding a dragon, would he still need to run away from ghosts?

...be it a specific game mechanic, the move to 3D, or even in how we interface with games like wireless, motion control, IR, touch, or VRU etc.

After reading Jim's review of Dragon Age, it seems like a lot of developers are biting off more than they can chew these days in terms of genre merging (i.e. RTS plus RPG doesn't work well in Dragon Age). Brutal Legend is another recent example of a failed merging of genres (RTS and Action). However, when this is done well (Bioshock, RPG elements with FPS), it creates a memorable and fun gameplay experience. What do you think of this trend of genre mixing (Mass Effect, Alpha Protocol, etc)? Do you think developers will continue to push into this direction, with all games eventually becoming harder to classify by traditional genre boundaries?

Do you guys think this generation of consoles could last a few more years? It seems we haven't had a long stretch of the majority of developers really mastering the hardware and putting out mind-blowing games since the 16 bit era. There seems to be a lot of room left for optimizing the graphics and gameplay on current hardware. So, will we see more Shadow of the Colossus or Resident Evil 4-like envelope pushers or are we doomed to soon see another shitty launch line-up of Madden and an FPS that doesn't live up to the expectations?

I had a few questions that I asked Anthony regarding Modern Warfare 2 via email and GTalk, but I wanted to get the rest of Podtoids opinions on them. Here they are, in glorious copypasta:

It's also been revealed through trailers that the White House has become occupied by what we can only assume are terrorists or some enemy nation. Having enemy forces/terrorists occupying the capital of the United States seems to be a certain realization or an attempt to recreate and dramatize the current paranoia of future terrorist attacks, a common fear among people of any nation. This is where my question starts to stretch a bit. Do you think that, similar to science fiction movies around the middle of the 20th century, games (specifically the Modern Warfare series) are beginning to create an antagonist based on current common fears of society? For example, there were a lot of films during the 1950's that addressed societies fears regarding both nuclear power (Most notably being Them!, a great movie which you should all watch) and the growing paranoia of Communism (The Day the Earth Stood Still being an easy, yet somewhat subtle example). Do you think that games are starting to mirror this method of creating an antagonist based on societies fears? If so, how do you feel about this?

As a follow up question, do you think that more developers should try and address societies insecurities in games? Do you believe that by doing so could possibly give games more credibility as a medium to provoke intelligent discussion and lose some of the negative connotation surrounding the phrase "video games"?

I know these questions might be a bit hard to answer, what with the game not actually being released yet, but I think it's important to get these thoughts out in the open before the game launches in order to clear the air of any prejudice.

Why is Bobby Kotick still a CEO of a gaming company? With all the shit he's said about the gaming industry ("I would charge more if I could", "I'm focused on taking the fun out of video game development"), you'd think he'd either not be in the gaming industry, or be hanged by the employees whose lives he's trying to suck the fun out of.

From Jim's review of Dragon Age it sounds like the limitations of console (360 in this case) controls could seriously hamper some peoples experiences with the game. Despite this fact the game is still receiving stellar scores, but if you actually read a lot of these reviews there is absolutely no indication of what platform the review was based on.

Do you think reviewers are doing a good job of identifying and communicating platform-specific concerns for multi-platform titles? Should review sites be allowed to submit a single score across all platforms without actually playing the game on multiple platforms?

Have you guys noticed how Michelle Rodriguez plays the exact same character in every movie she’s in?

Resident Evil – Hey I’m a tough girl. So what. Oh now I’m dead.
Fast and Furious – Hey I’m a tough girl. So what. Oh now I’m dead.
Lost – Hey I’m a tough girl. So what. Oh now I’m dead.

How about you guys do a video game commentary? Grab one of those long plays off YouTube (obviously one of the reasonably sized ones), record a commentary while you all watch it and then post the episode and a link to the vid.

Much more interesting than some crappy, badly acted film.

Or not, I don't care.
