Podtoid 121: Double Down Dragon photo

No Linde and no Samit for this episode, but we do have Topher, Jim, Brad, and Conrad. You will please to be enjoying it anyway.

Listen to the podcast here, as per usual.

This week, the Podtoid crew discussed Brutal Legend and Tim Schafer's subsequent "you're doing it wrong" email, Modern Warfare 2's crappy PC version, and Brad Nicholson's desire to see a dragon ride on top of another dragon.

I loved Brutal Legend. In no way do I think it deserves a 6, but I do agree that it does a terrible job at explaining things. After I beat the game I learned at least three new things about the game that I had no idea about while playing it. I even felt that I had to explain the things that I had learned about it while playing it to my friend before he played it. A Brutal Legend 2 would be a good idea. Here's a quandary for you, if Double Fine could team up with another development studio for Brutal Legend 2, which studio do you think would be proper mechanics match for what the game wants to achieve?

It seems like people discussing the MW2 server junk always completely leave out the latency issue that comes with a p2p method vs. a dedicated server, which I think is very much the central issue, with everything else branching off of that.

Hi sirs,

first: Brad is awesome. He should get a movie. Tagline: The world will never be the same once you've seen it through the eyes of Forrest Pumped.

Second: i guess that the price in the uk was increased due to the fact, that many german (and austrian and probably other european) customers import their games (and hardware) from britain, it's surrounding islands and other parts of the world. Because # it's much cheaper # german dubbing usually sucks # many gamers believe that the german version got cut. I think Sony (or somenone else) already intervened on this issue, because i can no longer order some PS3 games from the likes of amazon.com or playasia. With amazon.co.uk and the international waters like ebay, ordering still works fine. But importing MW2 from any of these places isn't really worth it, because of the nearly identical price.

Arrested Development is one of the greatest shows ever created. There are so many jokes in it that, chances are, you won't even notice them all the first time you watch it.

@joseffthered That is the KFC Double Down. Its a new sandwich they are test marketing that consist of cheese, bacon, and special sauce between two Kentucky fried chicken breast in place of a bun.

@craigbezzle: That monstrosity is the Double Down sandwich. Two chicken breasts as buns, and bacon and cheese in the middle. It hurts so good.

Ah, I heard about that and have yet to see it....sadly, I live in Kentucky, and we are not in the test market.

That looks good whatever the hell it is. Almost anything deep fried with a batter and has melted cheese on top is good.

@craigbezzle: Hang on... you're in Kentucky, and you're not in the test market for a new KFC sandwich? That seems so wrong...

Thanks Brad Nicholson.

Is KFC partnering with Life Insurance companies now?
Is this why the Double Down sandwich exists?

Also, thanks for helping out Conrad Zimmerman.

Hey Brad,

By using this mod in Oblivion:

http://www.fileplanet.com/185474/180000/fileinfo/Elder-Scrolls-IV:-Oblivion---Aaktosh-Dragon-Mount-v1.9-with-Extras

and play as one of those dragon-like humanoids then by that nature you are riding a dragon while being a dragon.

Good show overall. I wanted to say a couple of things about the MW2 PC stuff.

As far as modding is concerned, people will find a way to do it, the game just won't have built in support for it, I believe. The real tragedy is the lack of dedicated server support. Finding a great server to play on all the time is one of the best things about online PC gaming. By finding a good dedicated server to go back to you assure yourself of a decent connection. Plus, if it's well moderated, you don't have to put up with any bullsh*t from griefers.

I played a ton of COD4 on PC almost exclusively on a server operated by the gaming community I was a part of at the time. Now it's $10 more for less game? I am seriously reconsidering what once was a day one purchase for me.

I liked the Brutal Legend demo. I was thinking about buying it, but now I'm having second thoughts because I don't like RTSs. That's kind of BS that they lead people to believe they're buying an action game and it turns into an RTS half way through.

I still think you guys are way too focused in on the tiny little details. Yes the tutorial could have been more clear.

I love BL and will always love it.

I was very excited to try that sandwhich.
I got such a nice feeling as I ordered it. It felt like I was giving a giant finger to the health nuts and diet worshipers that I despise with all my soul.

And then it was terrible...

You're really missing the point in your MW2 discussion. The whole fuss is not really about the fact that you aren't able to create mods of the game. It's about the latency issues that come with a P2P multiplayer. I think it's okay for console games to implement a P2P multiplayer system, but on a PC, the game is usually played much much faster amd there's much more acual input (because of the superior mouse/keyboard input method). So you need the game to respond to your actions as fast as possible and that's not possible with a P2P system.
So by sticking with a P2P multiplayer, Infinity Ward is completely eliminating the possibility of competitive gaming in MW2. No one wants to play an online PC shooter with (for example) a latency > 100ms, hosts dropping out of the game or poor connectivity for every player only because the host has a slow internet connecting (or someone else starting to download some porn on the hosts LAN). That'd set PC gaming back for like 15 years..

I'm a QuakeLive player. Yes, I think it's a big deal, that QL can't be modded, but if that game also wouldn't have dedicated servers, I think that nobody would play it.
