Podtoid 117: A walking Sarlacc photo

This week's Podtoid is about rumors, Halos, and homophobia. Standard stuff, really -- no Resident Evil commentary this week.

You can listen to the thing here, as usual, or you can subscribe to us on iTunes

The most interesting question this week came from XeroxPunk, just because. Send your mailing address to podtoid@destructoid.com and we'll give you a swag bag, or something.

I dunno what we actually mail out, to be honest. That's not my department.

From my experience...5 cool badges and a ripped up envelope inside another envelope. Yet, I still found it awesome because Destructoid has its own address label tabs.

Comedy gold..., I oft times wonder why Samit is on the podcast. He is either the nicest guy ever and just refuses to defend himself, or he loves the punishment.

I think I'm done with the Samit basing. It was funny for a while and now it's either unpleasant or dull...especially when Topher is involved.

I think we should implement a Worst Comment award too.

Best comment gets a sway bag or whatever.
Worst comment gets a fart in a box mailed to them.

Fact: Jim sterling commanded forces in the battle of homophobes vs fag in world war 2 using battle strategies learned while playing Risk.

FACT: Most of his solders where kamikazes with bombs for testicles.

Funny enough episode, but seriously?
Get off Samit's back.
I don't know him personally, so I don't really give a shit about how he takes it (no offence), but it's unpleasant to listen to, and I end up having to skip the first 20 minutes of the podcast because the rest of the crew appear to be gangbanging him.
Just sayin'.

Yeah. I don't understand. It's like a grade-school type of flirting, what with how you treat Samit. It's incredibly childish and dumb to listen to.

I think Samit asks for it, by being incredibly nit-picky. He speaks about things that no one on the podcast cares about, such as what programs he has open, even when others are saying "We don't care!" His stories are painful to listen to due to his constant self-interruptions of "like" and "you know". I'm sure he's a nice enough guy in real life, but goddamn, he's the worst part of Podtoid.

Great show, as far as the Samit "bashing," I think it wasn't at all as bad as you guys are making it sound. Me and my friends do it to each other all the time. Besides we have seen Samit stand up to Chet so if he has a problem then he will say something. But he is a good SPORT about it.

I'd just like to point out that if you never bought Halo 3 then ODST is actually worth the $60. I never bought it, and I almost did recently just to check out the multiplayer as I played through the campaign at a friends house. Then I realized that the entire Halo 3 multiplayer is included in the ODST package.

Cool story, bro I guess but this wasn't brought up...I guess I may be the only one who never bought H3.

Having been a software engineer for a while, I'd say it would be quite easy to make a PS2 emulator only run games downloaded off the PSN vs not playing PS2 physical discs.

It'd just need some digital signature of some kind wrapping the PS2 downloaded game, and making the PS3 not start the emulator when it detects a PS2 disc.

I think Samit/Linde are spot on when they say they're doing it to squeeze out all the cash they can from users. Why let people play their physical copy of Silent hill 2 for free, when you can charge them $20 for an electronic copy? Seriously a super dick move.

Please invite Anthony Gallegos to the podcast! I fucking love RebelFM. It's all about penises and games so Anthony (dtoid) can relate to him.

Also, Jim Sterling... Your sights on racism are totally right. And to be dicksucking here but it's fucking great to have people like you who just say where it's at without any scrupulosity. Because as I've been listening to a lot of podcasts lately, I can't help but notice that there aren't many guys like you left. Everybody is fucking worried about ''Oh NO we can't say that or THESE people will get offended''... They're always busy with moral issues and shit like that but they forget that in the end, it doesn't matter what the fuck you say. It's the way you say it and the circumstances at which time you said it. And even then, who gives a fuck anyway.

There, that was my rant. You can agree with it or you can print it out and use it to whipe your asscrack.

@Topher & Adam - I feel your pain of transporting cooked food in a car for 30 or so minutes when you're fucking hungry. My situation has me driving a baked fresh and piping hot pastrami pizza to a town 30 minutes away for pizza parties. It's a straight 30 minutes of excruciating torture.

Samit tells stories like my dad. Putting in "um"s and big pauses, so you think he's going to say something interesting, but instead just meanders and can't just get to the point.

And I find it hilarious. Maybe it's because I'm used to it. But really, Samit's so damn lovable that I can't get irritated with his long stories. But really, I don't see any need to say "RAUGH KICK HIM OFF THE PODCAST".

And a hearty "get a fucking sense of humor" to the Samit Defense Force. Everybody just relax and stop taking things so seriously. You act like they're beating the guy bloody with shovels or something, as opposed to good natured ribbing.

by the way, Super Mario Bros. is a far superior movie to Resident Evil. Though it still sucks greatly, it's more akin to the Mystery Science Theatre magic you're all capable of.

I hear there was a hilariously awful Forbidden Siren movie, but from my understanding you guys all hate that game.

Nothing sucks as much as resident evil the games. The movie has something you could call "acting" and you don't have to put up with the ass wrothless gameplay.. And only one might scare you of you are on drugs and it is not the games.

and the super mario movie is like shakespeare if you put it next to something called resident evil.

Also Samit tells stories and has better acting than anybody on the entire resident evil series of games and movies and he is also more scary than the entire resident evil series.

Hahahaha, someone put "gay" into Jim's mouth when he was searching for an insult about a minute into the podtoid, and then you take my question about homosexual slurs.

I wasn't really going for Jim and Aaron having a long conversation about how much they love "the gays". My question ceded the point that you were joking around, but your conversation is being published to the world at large. I was hoping that my linking Card and your schoolyard insults would get you to realize that not everyone is in on the joke. To me, there's no difference between a kid on XBL calling someone a "dicksucker" and when you guys do it. Sure, he'll probably say he doesn't hate gay people in real life, but it still makes him sound like an idiot.

As for comments about dick sucking and the like being used for humor, I find it to be incredibly lazy. There is a world of difference between the humor derived from The Office's Micheal's treatment of Oscar, which works on many levels (including social commentary), and the idea that Anthony sucks dudes off. I'm sure the tweens find the latter hilarious, but I'm approaching 30 and maybe not the podtoid's targeted demographic. I also think Sterling's reasoning that he's helping de-power offensive words and bring about social change is horseshit. My instinct tells me that the easy laugh is his only goal.

I reposted the question because Jaffe, who seems like an intelligent, articulate person with a working knowledge of internet culture, responded incredulously to Anthony's use of "Indiefag". I could tell from his voice when he requested the question be repeated that he lost respect for his interviewer in that moment.

as someone past 30, i must be too mature to like stupid gay/fat/retarded jokes, i must point out; "haha, jim sterling admitted he is 7/20 a gay!"

xeroxpunk,
just because everyone isnt in on the joke, and just because the humor is peurile, doesnt mean that its wrong to joke about such things.

and your point about xbl kids using racist and sexist language probably not meaning it is true. but that is the point. most of those punk kids dont hate gays or females or blacks, they use those words because we decree them to be the naughtiest words. there are some kids who really are bigots, but as someone who works with kids,i can tell you that most of the time kids say shit like that they arent really bigots, they just say the words that will have the greatest effect. its true that jims use of those terms doesnt depower them, but jim is right when he says people who are too sensitive in their use are actually empowering those words. an analogy would be george carlins bit on the "7 words you cant say on tv". that bit is kinda funny, but was carlins biggest hit because he combined all the naughtiest words into it. the fcc made that bit successful.

and anthony should be able to use the word "indiefag", but he should also recognize the word has a very different connotation for him than for most, so when in unfamiliar company, he shouldnt be surprised if others take offense. the layer of irony that anthony attaches to it is not something most others would share.

I never said it was wrong, but I do think it throws them into the same category as the XBL kid. To me (and maybe Jaffe), smart people throwing around dick sucking jokes ad nauseam and words like "indiefag" just aren't trying hard enough to separate themselves from the infantile set most people associate with games.

I agree that some people are entirely too sensitive when it comes to words like "fag", "nigger", or pretty much any other slur. Every time I see or hear someone write or say "the n-word" or "the f-word" it makes me roll my eyes at how far in the wrong direction political correctness has gone. The complete abolition of a simple word as if was sinful is much worse to me than it being used in poor taste.

As for "indiefag" and the like, Anthony can use them all he wants, but it may bite him again. I originally came to Destructoid after one of his rants and thought he was a smart guy with interesting things to say about the current state of games and their future. Of course, I disagree with a lot of what he says, but my original take still stands. I would like to see more direct interaction with developers on the site and hope that Jaffetoid is a step in that direction. I just don't want stupid stuff like "indiefag" to get in the way of that.

xeroxpunk,
i see your point about not distinguishing themselves from xbl children. I guess for me, since i can tell the difference, i dont care how they appear to those outside. im not worried about them as ambassadors for gaming, because i think most people wont be convinced one way or the other about gaming through logic, gaming will reach respectability when enough gamophobic people die of old age.

i do hope more developer interaction comes to destructoid. so if necessary, that indiefag anthony better watch his mouth if it jeopardizes that!
