Podtoid 114 records in a few hours photo

Too tired. PAX was exhausting, yet enjoyable. You get the basic idea. Podtoid's tonight, and it'll be about news stories that we'll choose five minutes before the show. We'll need listener questions, and so on and so forth.

Here's what really matters: KoKoO Psy made a game called Ikuzo! Cheto!, and it's good. Dead Movie Star allegedly made some sort of Chet game as well, but I refuse to download it because I've already been burned three times before.

But anyway, yeah. Ask questions about videogames.

Also, this.

You guys ever go into a game store, find an old game that you've heard about, but never played, bought it, and then realized the game was shit?

I just bought Breakdown...

You guys mentioned games that you'd recommend that you didn't think were that great, and the first thing that came to mind was Shadow of Destiny. While the gameplay was pretty much crap, the plot and storyline was so intriguing to me I beat it to get all the endings to know the whole story. What did you guys think of this one?

Up until this point, the developer approach to player death has been one of a blind eye; the player is not supposed to die, and death is considered a "failure". Immediately upon death, a quick save is loaded and the player is thrusted back into the game with little or no consequence to "fix" the mistake they just made.
Games like Heavy Rain are starting to approach and examine this by using player death as a part of a developing story.
Fable 2 attempted to address the issue by making the player essentially invincible, but giving a visual consequence of a scar to the main character every time they died.
The mostly disappointing game Prey turned death into a short shooting gallery mini-game.

Even with all these attempts of addressing player death, many games seem to fall flat out of sheer tradition; "this is the way its been, this is what people are used too."

What are some examples of interesting approaches to player death in games that you have experienced, and what are some ideas that you feel might help break the "die, just try again" pattern that the entirety of video game history has been informed by?

Caveman Vs. Astronaut. Which one would you rather play as in a game, and which one has the history of being the better games.

Reader Question: If you had to choose one company's games (Capcom, Konami, etc.) to be published and played for all eternity, who would it be and why?

I got to play L4D2 and Scribblenauts at PAX. I found that when I was playing L4D2 the guys were being douchebags and made me a bait goat.:( I thought this was a game about teamwork and having your team mates survive with you. I can't believe it because they were sitting next to me and I would of slapped them upside their heads. Would you guys even pull this off and not think people would get mad over it?

With Dragon Age: Origins coming up everyone is talking about BioWare's great track record of making games with clever writing and a truly engrossing story. What are some of y'all's favorite video game stories and what is it about those stories that make them stand out in your mind?

Which do you find more important: Copying (i.e. stealing) game mechanics and perfecting them or devising new (often imperfect) ones?

Also: If Chet would have been one of the first human beings in existence, would there be world peace and no world hunger in our current age?

I went to PAX and played some games like Mass Effect 2, L4D2, Heavy Rain etc...and as expected, the games were quite good. My question for you guys is, what games would you say surprised you or heightened your interest. I played an indie game called Shank. I was very unaware of this games existence until the convention and was pleasantly surprised.

How much of the slim's sales is because of the price and not because of the redesign.

what is your favorite title that got added to games through the generations? (super, 64, 3d, HD, Wii etc.)

Is there any game that, if you could, you would erase all memory of it? You wouldn't have heard any spoilers, and would essentially be able to play through the game as if it was brand new. You would be able to avoid the Bioshock spoilers, and be able to re-experience discovering locations in Fallout 3, for example.

Sometimes I just want to load up an old game and play through a badass sequence (like, say, do the Trial section in the old Castle in Windwaker or fight the rock boss in Metroid Prime), but too often you have to start the damn game from the beginning just to get there. If the section is far into the game, then you're fucked.

What do you guys think of this? Is there a fun section of a game you'd like to revisit, but can't be bothered to put 10 hours into an old game to get to?

I've asked before, but what do you think about how nonstandard game length is? Movies generally clock in around 1.5-2.5 hours, live theater is typically a bit longer than that, and music rarely sees a song go for more than six or seven minutes, but games range from five minute to hundred-plus hour affairs.

While you guys were talking about QTEs done wrong, you mentioned putting QTEs in cutscenes and used Resident Evil 4 as an example. It feels to me like the Resident Evil games, or at least RE4 and Umbrella Chronicles, were one of the few games where that method was appropriate, since the gameplay often required fast reflexes, at least more than a standard action game. As a horror game, you were supposed to pay more attention to your surroundings than usual. Its pushing it to be sure, but it still felt to me like it was within the game's boundarys.

Also, Adam "60 McNugget" Dork needs to star in the next Quentin Tarantino film?

Are there any films you would like to see made into games if you (hypothetically) knew that the game was going to be at least pretty good? I vote for District 9 if only because I'd love to be immersed in that world some more.

How do you feel about games that break the fourth wall? Most times this is done for comical effect but this time, I would be referring to something that is rare. A retail adventure game with ARG influence or elements. The best and only example I can think of is Evidence: The Last Ritual. For those not familiar, it is a retail ARG/adventure game for PC in which the player receives e-mails from other in-game characters, including the game's main antagonist, as well as being asked to find a lot of information and clues to the games' puzzles on the internet, both from real websites, and from specially-created websites that have been mixed in with other real-world domains. In addition to these, the French version of the game offered to send SMS messages to the player directly to their mobile phones, as well as the ability to call any of the characters and have a real phone conversation with them. For as creative as this is, why don't we see more games like this? Bonus question: What game would you want to add ARG elements to?

More and more lately, a lot of stories on dtoid have images associated with them that, aside from the fact that they have nothing to do with the stories that they're tied to, are either borderline NSFW or just in poor taste.

A story about one of Dillinger’s relatives suing EA doesn't need an image with four guys restraining a girl and pouring milk on her.

A story about Sony's less than stellar online support doesn't need an image of a monster trying to tear a girl's clothes off.

A story about the PS3 Slim selling huge amounts of units in a short amount of time doesn't need an up-skirt image of a girl's panties while she's playing pool.

Why do you guys do this? I can certainly appreciate a wide variety of sexual content, and I can see the humor in posting an image and a story that have nothing to do with each other, but it's lately become the norm as opposed to the exception. Is this still supposed to be funny, or are you just trying to pander to gamer stereotypes? After all, all of these stories are immediately followed by many comments of approval, but doesn't it just seem rather tasteless?

Wait, here's an addendum -

It would be one thing if this site sucked and all of the articles within were written by morons, but the vast majority of the content here is well-written, funny, and often thought-provoking. I've been coming to this site since its birth pretty much, and the headers used to be really funny or ironic all of the time. Now, there's an occasional gem, but it does really seem like they're much less of a priority; as if, when the article is finished, one might just do a google image search for the most bizarre thing they can find.

Bioware recently commented on the importance of storytelling in games. We often talk about the advantages and disadvantages of videogames, but I find it strange that nobody talks about the lack of a standard writing format. Films and plays have scripts with a set structure - why not games? Do you think having an official 'videogame script' format would help make stories better?

Should the indusrty change the name videogames to something else, like interactive film. Similar to how comic books adopted the name graphic novel. Do you think it would help the industry gain more respect?

09/09/09 is the tenth anniversery of the SEGA Dreamcast. Discuss.

Will Destructoid be at PAX east?

A couple weeks ago you guys were talking about how Orson Scott Card's hyper-conservative views, especially regarding homosexuals, could be used by consumers as a reason to boycott Shadow Complex even though there is no bigoted material in the game. As unemployment has afforded me the opportunity to delve more deeply into previous podtoids, I've found that most if not all of the contributors use gay slurs as pejoratives with regularity.

I was wondering how you'd compare a piece of entertainment that has no offensive material made by a bigot to one that has an extensive amount made by people who are ostensibly joking around.

I ask because it seems so easy to say, "Fuck that bigot guy, he's so stupid and backwards!" and then turn around and bust on your friends for sucking tons o' dick (yeah, I do it on occasion myself... um, the busting on the friends part). For the record: I'm straight, liberal, and so tired of hearing the words "fag" and "nigger" on xbox live that I immediately mute everyone.

But, because serious, why does the media treat videogames as the new bitch? Is it just because it's the new 'Rock N Roll', because it acts as a spark to potentially murderous idiots or is there some deeper reason?
