Podtoid 113 is tonight, just so you know photo

Image on the left by Phallus Knife Fight. Image on the right by SuitcoatAvenger.

Tonight, Podtoid talks PAX, Arkham Asylum, and QTEs. And probably other stuff, which will be decided later. We'll also get some sort of an update on the nuggets debacle

As always, we need your questions. The best question-asker-person gets a Dtoid swag bag, so hit the jump and give it everything you've got.

And yes, Kohlstream's It Never Happened techno remix will be the intro to the show.

Did any of you feel a distinct feeling of Metal Gear Solid 1 while playing Arkham Asylum? I think that's why I enjoyed it so much, it follows the same sort of path that MGS1 had, apart from an ass ending.

When i googled "Brad Nicholson" a peck hit me in the nose and raped my wife, high-fiving a poster of chuck norris while doing so. Is this a common occurrence?

What joke, line, statement or meme about the members of the cast would you like to be remembered the most for?

And, more videogamingly, what are your favourite/most remembered death scenes in games and in what way did it stand out? I've been thinking about how few times there are in games and movies where an important character is killed without any dramatic speech or build up and, to me, that would make the death a bigger impact.

Oh, and have you ever predicted plot twists insanely early?

Have you guys seen the new commercials for any of the old Billy Mays products? Why did they have to go to opposite side of the voice over spectrum?

Is it me, or have the mechanics of the horror genre become tired and overused. In games such as Resident Evil, Dead Space, Dead Rising, they have become aligned with trends that will soon wear out, if not, already have. Shortage of equipment / supplies, save points, grossly over powered opponents, player character's lack of abilities (Running/Jumping) are just a few. Is there any way to breathe life into this genre or will we be stuck with these common game mechanics?

Hello you beautiful celestial beings you. Long time listener, first time question asker.

My first is this: How are you today?

Second: What personality trait annoys you the most about each cast member? Do it with love please. You boys leave samit alone!

Thirdly: Can I have a hug or maybe even an autograph please?

So, gaming has had a lot of big, memorable moments: Aeris dying, the Psycho Mantis battle, the room where you first realize what "Would you kindly?" means. Having played through Arkham Asylum, do you think, as I do, that the 2nd encounter with Scarecrow (when you see you-know-who dead) is one of these moments? Is this the kind of moment that will be talked to death by everyone that experiences it?

Somewhat following the Shadow-complex-boycott-debacle whatamajiggar-thread, has a game designer's public personality ever influenced your enjoyment of their output? Is David Cage too pretentious for your money, is Suda 51 too awesome, is Kojima insane, is Itagaki insane, Jon Blow too intellectual, etc etc.

In short, does the thought of who your money is going to ever influence your game purchasing decisions?

My question is simply; "What the shit?"

Am I going to decide to NOT open it partway through? Am I supposed to find it a challenge? I've never understood that sodding idea.

Is there a genre or series of games you were late to the party playing, but once you did, completely flipped your gaming world around and opened up you to a new obsession and all sorts of new possibilities?

For example, personally it was survival horror/Resident Evil. I didn't give the series a second look until RE hit the GGN, but after I tried that I was hooked and now throw myself at anything remotely survival horror.

Do you think Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy/whatever you want to call it did QTE's right, or did you think there was a problem with the way that game played. (apart from half the last act being missing)

I really don't get the backlash for Heavy Rain being a QTE heavy game, since I thought Fahrenheit was such a great game in the way it was styled. When David Cage has a moan at the people criticising Heavy Rain already for its focus on quick time events, to me he just seems to come off as insecure with his current work. He made something great, he's following it up and hopefully the product will be as good, if not better than he made before!

Today I start a volunteer job as a Computer Room Supervisor for an after school program in town. I have to make sure they go to educational sites and eventually have to start making lesson plans of my own. What should I teach these children? (They are in 1st-5th grade)

Now for some real questions. Besides Arkham Asylum, what other games do you feel have had something really going for it, only to drop the ball at the end?

Yesterday I played Arkam Aslyum for twelve hours straight, so i'm pretty sure i've gone made like the inmates. However ever since I was a little kid a game hasn't sucked me into a universe so efficiently. Yes the game has problems but what do you guys think of the pacing? Whenever the thought popped into my mind about putting the controller down I would either get a new gadget or find one of Riddlers maps. The Metroid/Castlevania sensibility here is used to great effect and like Anthony I'm not even a fan of that kind of game play.

Also, Anthony what do you think of the Eleventh Doctor? The casting, his outfit etc etc.

Looking through some of my old magazines, I noticed that there was once a game for the SNES based on the early 90's sitcom Home Improvement. From what I've read, it was as good as a game based on some old family sitcom could be. That is to say not very.

My question for you is have you ever played or heard of a game that featured a license that made you wonder "Why the fuck is this a game?"

I think the Detoid staff and community who are going to PAX should all head to a McDonalds location and EACH order 20 pieces of Chicken McNuggets. If you carry them around with you at PAX, people can recognize you just by the familiar smell of.....well, I can't really think of a fitting adjective here.

Are horror games getting kind of fucked out? The most recent "entries" into this genre have been balls-out action experiences for the most part. Residen Evil 5, F.E.A.R. 2, even Dead Space, to an extent (complete with new ammo supplies with each kill). The most recent Silent Hill game, a series known for its psychological horror, pushed combat waaaay to the forefront and seemed to focus more on irritating bossfights rather than telling a decent story. It seems like "scary" is being replaced with "bodycount". Do you think it's possible to do a really, truly scare videogame anymore? If so, what would you like to see in said game that hasn't really been done before?
