Podtoid 112 is Double Dragon-free, thank God photo

Back to the regularly irregular news episodes that made Podtoid so famous quasi-popular at least moderately well known within the Destructoid community long-running. Tonight, Jim, Aaron, Topher and I (Samit may be on a plane, or something) will discuss the Shadow Complex boycott, the PS3 slim, sociopathic game heroes, and other topics. And listener questions, obviously, which we hope you will provide after the jump.

Also, Podtoid is now recording on Tuesdays -- hope that doesn't screw anything up for you.

Anyway, feel free to hit the jump and start asking stuff for the chance to win a Dtoid swag bag.

The last podcast wasn't so bad, I don't consider my time fully waisted.
Anyway, if I want to buy a game for my PSP, what should you consider a good game for it ?
And why do Indie games look better than most of the big games ?Does this show a beggining in the lack of creativity in the industry ?

What's the biggest 'jump the shark' moment you've ever encountered in a game?

A moment so 'WTF?!' that you stopped liking the game or defended its flaws, e.g. The Dragonball Z/Matrix moments in Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy, the switch to Freedom Fighters jungle action in Kane & Lynch: Dead Men, the whole orphanage moment in Final Fantasy VIII, the head exploding thing in Condemned 2.

Have you ever met anyone that didn't look like they played videogames and/or had as much knowledge as you did about them, but when you found out, it was a complete surprise? Also, do gamer stereotypes play a role in the surprise?

Going off of the reactions from the Shadow Complex boycott post, I was kinda surprised by how conservative many gamers appear. I suppose I shouldn't have assumed so much, but I was always kinda under the impression that most gamers were a bit more liberal than the comments suggested. Did any of you labor under similar assumptions?

The Shadow Complex issue brings up the wonderful intersection between video games and politics that has tried to rear its ugly head as of late, to be met quite often with apathy from the general video game buying public.

My question is do you this thing apathy stems from gamers truly not caring, i.e. is our "generation" simply unwilling to care about larger political issues beyond the idiotic attempts at video game legislation, or do you think there is a common viewpoint shared by those of us with this hobby, and where do you think that common viewpoint begins and ends?

Any of you guys see Inglourious Basterds yet? I saw it yet and I'm still sorting out my exact feelings for it. I know I like it a lot and that it's not my favourite Tarantino movie (Kill Bill) but that's about it. Samurai-style execution with a baseball bat is probably my favourite scene in the movie though.

RE: the boycott. I think GayGamer put it best.

"I think if you're obviously too disgusted to enjoy the game, avoid it, and speak out. However, if you want to play the game, play it. Enjoy it, but offset the hate: if you buy Shadow Complex, donate $5, $10, $15 if you can spare it to a gay charity. Let them know why you're giving the money. Card won't get nearly that much per game."

And now for something completly different. Is a sad or depressing ending a bad ending? Do all RPGs need a everyone wins ending? Is that a realistic ideal? Or can a rpg have a sad and depressing ending and still be considered great.

"No, what bothers me is people who suggest that it's a non-issue because the topic of discussion is a game. "Holy crap, it's just a game," says user intheinbetween. "Don't judge a picture by its painter," suggests Lagunamov. "Remember back when we were kids and we just enjoyed games?" asks Wizman23.

Yes, I do. But we are not kids anymore. I'm of the NES generation. Born in 1977, the same year as the Atari 2600, I was 10 for the release of Metroid, 16 for the release of Super Metroid, and 20 for the release of Symphony of the Night, the touchstone games that inspired Shadow Complex. I was 32 on the day it became available for download on Xbox Live Arcade, and my life, it's safe to say, has changed drastically. I can't approach things the way I did as a child. That's not me being self-righteous; I mean that I literally cannot do this. "

Just started listening to the past podcasts so forgive me if my question has been asked.

It sounds like some of you may have read or heard of TvTropes, a website devoted to the various cliche's that exist through movies, tv, games, etc. What are you're favorite videogame related cliches and what are you're least favorite?

Are there any movies from this summer that you:
a) Think could be pretty fun games (e.g., District 9, Inglourious Basterds).
b) Had terrible games (e.g. Star Trek) but could have been interesting if developers had put in more effort.
c) Shouldn't have been, or ever be, made into video games.

Also, that's 3 Podtoid posts in a row that feature my screencaps/shops! At least I got something done instead of finishing cblogs I'm working on.

Is the suggestion of a Shadow Complex reflective of political correctness finally begun to rear it's ugly head among perceived core gamers?

This is different from other attempts at boycotts against games like GTA or Mass Effect, as I would argue that those were driven by organizations outside of the gaming community. But this one has its roots traced back to NeoGAF.

I personally don't give a damn about what Card believes. I think he has a right to peacefully advocate for whatever cause he chooses, just as we all do. And while I'm aware that people who choose to boycott are peacefully advocating their cause, doesn't a boycott seem a touch ham-fisted? Can't we just agree to disagree and enjoy a quality product as long as we are co-mingling peacefully?

If your answer to that is no, consider this. Some of the pioneers of the early space programs which have given us everything from space exploration to modern satellite communications, were former Nazi engineers and scientists grabbed up by the Allies and Soviets after the war. Do you not use some telecommunications devices or watch satellite TV out of memory of the holocaust?

Would you boycott Shadow Complex if Orson Scott Card were an anti-semite who claimed that the death camps never happened?

Not making a statement pro or against the boycott, and I'm certainly not implying that homophobia and anti-semitism are in any way comparable.

I'm just curious about whether the extremity of someone's intolerance/hatred/ignorance who is tangentially associated with a game would affect your willingness to support the game with a purchase.

I finally got around to playing Mirror's Edge. I'd describe it the worst game I've played in a long time that I would still recommend to others. It has plenty of faults, but it tries enough interesting new ideas to deserve a play.

What is the worst game any of you have played that you would still recommend others try?

Having eagerly awaited the release of Black Mesa (the HL2 total conversion remake of the original Half life), I wonder why Valve hasn't stepped in to help out the project, not necessarily with personnel, but at least with resources and financing.

Based on fan reaction to said mod, it would seem to be a smart move for Valve to step in and back up the project, maybe even going so far as to turn it into a full fledged game and release it (i for one would be perfectly happy paying money for the mod).

So basically, do you see it as a financially viable option for game developers/publishers to finacially endorse such ambitious fan projects (including regular mods) rather than, on some previous occasions, shut them down?

With the Shadow Complex boycott going on I was wondering what game writer/artist/developer's game do you enjoy but don't agree with their politics or world view. If too difficult you can choose a person outside of gaming.

(Also you can't say David Jaffe because everybody knows he's a good game designer but kinda of a asshole. And no that's not me agreeing with Anthony who can sometimes be a menstruating mary.)

Does the complete lack of originality in Shadow Complex depress any of you? I knew the style of the game was metroidvania but apart from getting to use a gun turret every so often, there wasn't a single game play mechanic that Super Metroid hadn't already done.
Do you think the creators should have tried harder to put their own unique spin on the genre, instead of copying a better game?

Where is the line for any of you where you simply wouldn't buy a game that you would otherwise due to the opinions or practices of one of the people behind its design? Let's say it's a game you're anticipating about as much as Shadow Complex. How terrible would the person have to be, how big a role would they have to play in the game's creation, and what percentage of your purchase would have to go directly to them before you simply couldn't bring yourself to buy an otherwise enjoyable game?

Oh, I also had a question regarding game length. Why is it that other forms of entertainment/art have general durations--movies are typically 1.5-2.5 hours long and songs are about 3-5 minutes long--but games vary from five minute to 120 hour affairs?

Only written works seem to have the same flexibility of duration, ranging from the short Billy Budd to the painfully long Moby Dick. Why is it people can accept ridiculously long books and games, but almost nobody would watch a four hour movie?

When Microsoft announced that they were going to release console video games (maybe back in 2000?), my expectations were very low and that they would crash and burn. It's pretty clear that they didn't. When you first heard that, did you take them seriously or did you scoff at them too? Do you think there's any company that could do the same today?

I would say Apple, given the success of iPhone games and the impression that they're more than just super casual filler. There still aren't enough games in the iPhone market to overtake the DS or PSP, but could developers support the iPhone, and in a couple of years, become a valid gaming company?
