Jim can't make it, so we're not doing the Double Dragon commentary tonight. I do apologize. We'll do it next week, if at all humanly possible. Still, I present you three fantastic illustrations by Guyver 0, Kiranio, and Technophile as an apology.
This week, I guess we're doing news stuff. Topics include: the place of cut scenes in games versus designing a story based around systems and player choice, the possibility of a Crimson Skies sequel, and Activision CEO Bobby Kotick's desire to raise game prices.
We need listener questions, obviously, and I presume you will be the ones to deliver them. Feel free to hit the jump and start asking random (but ideally game-related) stuff for the chance to win a Dtoid swag bag.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Question: Why is Linde the only Podtoid cast member who doesn't come to the forums? Does he hate awesomeness?
(yes, all my questions revolve around forum shit. I can't help it)
Or, alternatively, are there any characters in a game you think deserve their own spin-off game? For me, I think that The Boss from MGS could and SHOULD have a game about her.
So much that you were shouting at the bad guy because, yeah he's the bad guy and he did something terrible. Or because the good guy showed again why he is such a badass.
I'm not playing a lot of games but it is a long time ago that I did that.
Shouldn't that be a part of every RPG?
It seems like the companies short term goals are somewhere between evil and retarded. their dependance of expensive periphereals (Guitar Hero, DJ Hero, Tony Hawk) and their obsession with raising the price of games could eventually lead consumers being burned out of this whole stuff and a reduction in the size of the industry. What do you guys think?
And honestly i thought it was part of the game making a statement about the character seeing the world as black or white and the image cutting out things happening that the character would choose not to see to maintain his narrow view And that throughout the game more and more color would be added into the game world and the image would cut out less often as the characters views expand from the narrow spectrum he was seeing and choosing to see at the beginning of the game.
Well needless to say after a couple of hours it didnt change so i researched it and it turned out my video cable was no fully plugged in.
Now for the question what video game/console flaw have you expanded into an deeper meaning until you figured out it was actually a glitch/flaw?
(I guess Samit is exempt from this question, as john madden screaming commentary over top poorly motion-capped tennis players is obviously the pinnacle of this art form)
The list included Braid, Audiosurf, Blueberry Garden, Everyday Shooter, Gish, THe Path, World Of Goo, Darwinia, Mr Robot and another that I can't remember.
1) Game developers have to design/programm alot of "game" that is not "used" by the player if he only plays through a game ones, which results in the second problem.
2) The different stories (good/neutral/bad) often are less though-out in comparison to linear stories.
Here's a siegelpuntz (remember those) with a Billy Mays twist:
Any sports topics by Samit will make the rest of the crew Madden 10 seconds or less guaranteed!
Do you think Best Buy's price match experiment will actually work?
Examples: Role play - Zelda. [kind of]
Trad. Dev - Beyond Good & Evil.
I think essentially what I'm asking is which is more effective, and if you think it is at all relavent to the success of a game?
I'm not saying people don't have the right to complain, but honestly can they not see these patterns?
I think this is an obvious result of the merging of big publishing companies... now they almost have a virtual monopoly in the games industry.
Or, at the very least, the most fun.
It was my understanding that we went from $50.00 last generation to $60.00 this generation because of "HD". If HD isn't new and is less costly come next generation shouldn't we see a return to the $49.99 average price point?
Also, could that be one of the reasons why all the publishers are so gun ho about the idea of a next generation never coming at all. That way they can keep the prices this high (plus the insanely high Collectors prices).
I have a question specifically for our residential "Indie Fag" (and I mean that only in the nicest way possible ;) ) Anthony (though everyone else can chime in if need be)
Mr. Burch, I know of your intense hatred for Metroidvania style games. Am I to understand you also hate the Zelda series as well? I ask this because I notice some similarities in the Zelda series that are prominent. Mainly the seemingly obligatory need to backtrack to an earlier part of the game once you find a new item that would allow you access to an area you saw earlier. That being said do you care to elaborate on what makes differentiates Zelda from Metroidvanias?
Also a shout out to Jim and his slacktitude! Thanks man, first no new "Video game show what you've done" or whatever the crap it's called and now your absence causing a lack of Double Dragontoid (which in turn is causing my NOT downloaded copy of Double Dragon to NOT take up space on my hard drive)
All pissing and belly aching aside, love the show and keep up the good work!
Also I think we need to look at how we define cutscene, because the way I see it is that even Half-life 2 (Half-Life 2: Episode 2 specifically has the most restrictive cutscenes in the series to date) has custscenes, your just capable of moving around while it happens and can't ever skip it if your replaying. A 'cutscene' as I've always interpreted it is a moment of exposition in a game designed to focus a players attention to an important event, character, or story moment. Examples include:
*SPOILER WARNING!!!*
Half-Life 2 Episode 2
When Eli Vance is killed at the end of episode 2, the player is literally pinned to the wall by an the alien telekinesis and is forced to watch and hear every moment as Alex watches her father die.
Call of Duty 4
After the Nuke goes off and you are allowed to stumble around for a few minutes, you have movement, but the restrictions upon you mean you have no choice but to sit back and study the mushroom cloud and ruined city.
Portal
Once you enter GlaDos’s chamber, you have total freedom of movement, but absolutely nothing to do besides fire the gun at the walls, You can’t go back, can’t go forward, and can’t skip GlaDos’s dialogue until the pod falls off.
*End Spoilers*
With these in mind, why do we still insist on only calling a MGS4 style event a cutscene while other developers get off the hook for the same thing, but a different perspective?
Which strategy has been/will be more successful, A.) using games as a medium for exploring real world issues and human themes or B.) exploring the art of games-as-games and dealing with the aesthetics and mechanics and history of computer games. In other words, if games are art, should they be realistic art or abstract?
Is there a cure or should I off myself immediately?
Note: When listening to RetroforceGo I do not yet feel the need to duel Chad, so I think that I am not so far gone as to be hopeless.
"Jim can't make it"...Haha did you even read what Anthony wrote?
For me, it was the 2002 Xbox full-contact futuristic ultimate frisbee game Deathrow (read "death throw") that my friends and I were recently introduced to. While we can't actually stomp on each others' faces in real life, the IRL analogue of this game has proven to be ridiculously entertaining despite the fact that I am terrible at sports.
Am I the only one who gets mildly pissed when games switch to higher quality FMVs for certain cutscenes? Why can't the whole game consist of graphics like this or just not at all?
Who wins?
