'Nother Monday, 'nother Podtoid. All pretty status quo, at this point.
We'll be talking about the Penn and Teller videogames episode, alternative payment structures for games (à la Trash Panic and Battlefield Heroes), and videogames' worst month in a long time. We will also be taking a brief detour back to MAN ISLAND.
As always, we need your questions. The best one nets the person who asked it a Dtoid swag bag, so hit the jump and commence with the askin'.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Seriously: The Episode was not bad. And I was really feeling bad for the poor fella in the end.
Problem is: Ppl who watch P&T, probably have a liberal opinion on that topic anyway.
Turn based (FF)
Active time (some FF games)
Real time (Tales/Star Ocean)
Or a hybrid like what FF 12, Shadowhearts and Eternal Sonata did?
And when you see an RPG/JRPG does the way it presents its combat system turn you off from a prospective play through? If say it is another Turn based do you love that or do you find them archaic?
This leads me to ask this question: are the classification systems believable anymore, as they also probably rate based on video and the box ?
Or, have you ever seen or read about something that occurs in games that made the game seem amazing enough to warrant buying, but the full game either doesn't have this or has so little of it that it doesn't matter? Far Cry 2 comes into mind. "If you shoot this guy in the leg, his friend will come to help him, drawing him into the open" was something that really appealed to me, being a sneaky-tactical-bastard person.
I know Chet did, but I was wondering how you guys felt about it. I tried playing the original a few years ago, but I just couldn't get past the graphics. Playing the new one, I don't know how you guys could've ever stood the original. The jokes don't seem as funny when they're not being delivered through voice actors, but that's just my opinion...
I think it may be my favourite XBLA game ever, and most definitely a contender for downloadable GOTY.
XNA Community Games, which was renamed to XBOX Live Community Games, is now known as XBOX Live Indie Games - do you think the latest change from "community" to "indie" is beneficial?
Personally I think it a double edged sword - it grants the XNA games a higher social standing, but at the same time the message it conveys is that independent publishers are not welcome on XBL proper unless their game is a proven cash cow.
I recently got into a debate about how games present their narrative when a silent protagonist is involved. I feel that the success of engaging the player can sometimes depend on how the silent character is presented. For example, in games where a silent protagonist has moods and expressions of their own, I sometimes feel more interested in the story because despite being silent, the protagonist is a character that I can relate to through their apparent emotions and reactions. Examples of this would be Link in Zelda, Crono in Chrono Trigger, or the Persona protagonists (more so in P4 than P3, really). On the flip side, I feel less interested in the story when I am thrust into the roll of the player character and the character has no expression or "voice" of their own, which is a staple of first person games. Some examples could be any game Bethesda's made or Half-Life 2 (seriously, when I am in Gordon's shoes, I become an asshole who just likes to shoot first and ask questions NEVER). I guess the real question here is how do you guys feel about your silent protagonists? Which do you feel better moves a narrative along?
Samit, looking at the header image, do you wax or shave? Bonus points for the Brazilian.
What do you think of this episodic release strategy for an adventure game?
Either for Monkey Island specifically or just on principle.
Do you like it, hate it...why? Please discuss.
So I take it Chet aka Brad rules over MAN ISLAND with an iron fist?
Or did Chet send one of his minions to watch over MAN ISLAND while he's being the Warrior of the North?
How would you feel if when you made a choice in a game, the game locked that choice in from then on? Meaning, lets say you have the choice to kill someone or not. Let's say you do. Then for each time you play though the game after that, that choice becomes a cutscene, and they always die. You have no control over that event anymore.
Do you feel like this would make your choices have a bigger impact?
What if the choices you made effected other peoples saves on the same system? Or if they used Xbox live, or PS3's online so that the more people that make the choice, the more it's locked in. So if 51% of people make the moral choice to kill a major character, it means a random number of users from then on have that choice forced upon them.
I know it wouldn't be too good for those that don't get to make that choice, but if you were the one making the choice, how would that feel in your mind? Would you take more time to choose? Would you take the moral high ground? Or would you be more likely to go evil? Would this make the events have more meaning to you?
Thanks
Keep up the good work.
Topher if you had to design a SHMUP what would it be like? vertical or horizontal, serious or cute em up. Bullet hell or.......non bullet hell?
Whats the most unintentionally scary thing in a game for you?
AND have you really gotten a grip on how to use burnouts multiplayer? If you have I feel REALLY ignorant
I remember me and my brother used to get really outraged, back when we were playing FIFA 98.
And when I played Ultima 9, I got stuck in a fucking pool and could not find a way out for a week or so and actually kicked the wall so hard, it got cracks (Es waren nur Gipsplatten, also kein Chet-Move.).
Would you rather play Madden 09 with Samit or take a beating from Chet?
Alternatively,
Would you rather punt your new born child or push your own grandmother down a flight of stairs?
Followup: if Rock Band 2 gets to sell community content, then a 3D Shooter Engine could also sell community DLC, meaning even MORE money and LESS work for the developers.
Also, if you haven't already, go look at mario actually's comment. Does it scare you as much as it scares me?
Do you think it's just a passing fad, or are things really as cyclical as that?
This can be anything from a cool Little Big Planet level you played, to the most kick ass Oblivion character, to the best PC game mod you've ever played, etc. What made it so awesome/cool/good?
It can be something you made or what somewhat else made :)
Is this good (because it matches high and low selling periods) or bad (because you can have months go by with only a handful of big releases)?
also hi everyone else
steal stuff or punch low flying seagulls?
Also, does "alternative payment structures" include A Reckless Disregard for Gravity, or is that just an "alternative release structure"?
The reason why I ask this is because the fact that the kid cried after firing the gun in Penn & Teller showed (granted with a little soft science) that he felt bad about it. His conscience kick in, mature videogames or not.
Maybe videogames are just not powerful enough to affect a regular mentally healthy person. A loner or a any person with some kind of mental disorder would be affected by videogames but they wouldn't be to blame for the kid's actions. people like Jack Thompson should change their focus and instead of trying to ban the sale of mature videogames to kids they should work to get these kids the counseling adn therapy they need, that's the real solution, not violent videogames.
