Podtoid 107: tonight's the night photo

Picture by Phallus Knife "I refuse to turn the paper sideways under any circumstances" Fight.

'Nother Monday, 'nother Podtoid. All pretty status quo, at this point.

We'll be talking about the Penn and Teller videogames episode, alternative payment structures for games (à la Trash Panic and Battlefield Heroes), and videogames' worst month in a long time. We will also be taking a brief detour back to MAN ISLAND.

As always, we need your questions. The best one nets the person who asked it a Dtoid swag bag, so hit the jump and commence with the askin'.

It's a known fact that most moral choice systems in games are not implemented well and tend to only affect the ending (eg Bioshock). I was wondering if you'd like to see games implement a system like in silent hill 2 where the factors which affect your ending are hidden from the player. I feel that the only way to achieve a satisfying ending is through gameplay and not a binary choice presented obviously to the player. Thoughts?

With the rise of games in England and the probable crash of videogames coming near, do you think the inclusion of adverts in games will be the good solution to maintain those prices ?

Hm, I don't know about the P&T episode. I was kind of disappointed, that the boy turned out to be such a whiny fucking-ass-pussy-bitch-fag in the end. I thought that they would use his game-induced aiming superpower to kill the damn motherfuckers, who think video games are inducing violent behaviour. Fuck I would like to see those damn fuckers get shot in the head....

Seriously: The Episode was not bad. And I was really feeling bad for the poor fella in the end.

Problem is: Ppl who watch P&T, probably have a liberal opinion on that topic anyway.

If the PSPgo is truly serious about download only games, how do you think they should structure payments for such things? If anything I think it would be ideal for episodic content. You know, pay a little at first to see if you like the game then pay the rest to finish the game.

What do you guys think about the battle system in RPG’s? what kind of system do you guys prefer?
Turn based (FF)
Active time (some FF games)
Real time (Tales/Star Ocean)
Or a hybrid like what FF 12, Shadowhearts and Eternal Sonata did?
And when you see an RPG/JRPG does the way it presents its combat system turn you off from a prospective play through? If say it is another Turn based do you love that or do you find them archaic?

What ever happened to the cartridge? Sure you can hold moar memory with a straight up disk, but it's impossible to make a peripheral that is directly part of the game with a disk. Would you guys be down with a USB cartridge adapter for your PC?

Also, with Little King's Story, PEGI did a very bad job, rating it, by giving it a 7+, while the ESRB gave it a T.
This leads me to ask this question: are the classification systems believable anymore, as they also probably rate based on video and the box ?

Have you had a moment in a game where the basic structure and gameplay of the game completely changes, BUT it remains as fun if not more fun? The great annoyance of an action game taking away all your weapons and forcing you into stealth comes into mind.

Or, have you ever seen or read about something that occurs in games that made the game seem amazing enough to warrant buying, but the full game either doesn't have this or has so little of it that it doesn't matter? Far Cry 2 comes into mind. "If you shoot this guy in the leg, his friend will come to help him, drawing him into the open" was something that really appealed to me, being a sneaky-tactical-bastard person.

Have you bought Monkey Island: SE yet, and if so, did you like it?

I know Chet did, but I was wondering how you guys felt about it. I tried playing the original a few years ago, but I just couldn't get past the graphics. Playing the new one, I don't know how you guys could've ever stood the original. The jokes don't seem as funny when they're not being delivered through voice actors, but that's just my opinion...

I think it may be my favourite XBLA game ever, and most definitely a contender for downloadable GOTY.

Why do you think it has taken LucasArts so long to honour their back catalogue with the recent addition of classics on Steam and the awesome Monkey Island remake? Also how much will the Monkey Island remake need to sell before they redo Monkey Island 2?

XNA Community Games, which was renamed to XBOX Live Community Games, is now known as XBOX Live Indie Games - do you think the latest change from "community" to "indie" is beneficial?

Personally I think it a double edged sword - it grants the XNA games a higher social standing, but at the same time the message it conveys is that independent publishers are not welcome on XBL proper unless their game is a proven cash cow.

What do you feel the next innovation in controllers will be? Not the next form of it, like new motion/ mind controls or what have you, but the next new thing to be added to the standard dual analogue controller that forms the standard. Part of me feels there won't be any (compare the Dual Shock 2, Original Xbox Controller and even the gamecube controller to there this gen counterparts (the GCN's being the Classic Controller.) There's really not a great deal of difference (sixaxis aside,) only things have gotten sleeker and more ergonomic. At the same time though, it wasn't to long ago that I held the N64 controller in my hands, and thought that it was gaming's peak. Long story short, what do you feel if any will be the next innovation for the standard controller, or have we hit the top of what can be added to it, and everything from now on will just be perfecting it?

I doubt this question will be asked even if it mentions Half-Life.

I recently got into a debate about how games present their narrative when a silent protagonist is involved. I feel that the success of engaging the player can sometimes depend on how the silent character is presented. For example, in games where a silent protagonist has moods and expressions of their own, I sometimes feel more interested in the story because despite being silent, the protagonist is a character that I can relate to through their apparent emotions and reactions. Examples of this would be Link in Zelda, Crono in Chrono Trigger, or the Persona protagonists (more so in P4 than P3, really). On the flip side, I feel less interested in the story when I am thrust into the roll of the player character and the character has no expression or "voice" of their own, which is a staple of first person games. Some examples could be any game Bethesda's made or Half-Life 2 (seriously, when I am in Gordon's shoes, I become an asshole who just likes to shoot first and ask questions NEVER). I guess the real question here is how do you guys feel about your silent protagonists? Which do you feel better moves a narrative along?

What are your thoughts on the Mortal Kombat-themed MAN KOURT that was recently revealed to have been cut from NBA Jam? Why has there been a sudden influx of easter eggs and other weird stuff from older games? Also, what is your favorite easter egg or secret from the current generation of games?

Samit, looking at the header image, do you wax or shave? Bonus points for the Brazilian.

Tales of Monkey Island is being released over five months July - November...
What do you think of this episodic release strategy for an adventure game?
Either for Monkey Island specifically or just on principle.
Do you like it, hate it...why? Please discuss.

So I take it Chet aka Brad rules over MAN ISLAND with an iron fist?
Or did Chet send one of his minions to watch over MAN ISLAND while he's being the Warrior of the North?

Setting aside the controversy over whether games cause people to harm each other, has a game ever caused you to hurt yourself? Back in ye olde days of Super Nintendo being cutting edge I managed to give myself a blister that took up about 30% of my palm by mashing the d-pad in King of the Monsters 2. I also managed to give myself a raccoon mask around my eyes by rubbing them so much while playing Super Mario World for essentially days straight.

I know the morality thing has been done to death. But here's my question for you all. I thought of this a few weeks ago, but always happen to miss the question post.

How would you feel if when you made a choice in a game, the game locked that choice in from then on? Meaning, lets say you have the choice to kill someone or not. Let's say you do. Then for each time you play though the game after that, that choice becomes a cutscene, and they always die. You have no control over that event anymore.

Do you feel like this would make your choices have a bigger impact?

What if the choices you made effected other peoples saves on the same system? Or if they used Xbox live, or PS3's online so that the more people that make the choice, the more it's locked in. So if 51% of people make the moral choice to kill a major character, it means a random number of users from then on have that choice forced upon them.
I know it wouldn't be too good for those that don't get to make that choice, but if you were the one making the choice, how would that feel in your mind? Would you take more time to choose? Would you take the moral high ground? Or would you be more likely to go evil? Would this make the events have more meaning to you?
Thanks
Keep up the good work.

Have you ever really lost your temper over playing a game?
I remember me and my brother used to get really outraged, back when we were playing FIFA 98.
And when I played Ultima 9, I got stuck in a fucking pool and could not find a way out for a week or so and actually kicked the wall so hard, it got cracks (Es waren nur Gipsplatten, also kein Chet-Move.).

Rock Band is really successful at being a kind of platform where the publisher can charge for DLC that people will gladly pay for. Now that companies want to move toward online distribution (to be rid of the pesky used games market, to combat piracy, etc) what do you think of games that are really shells for selling plug-in content? What if Halo was really an engine, and you could purchase maps, weapons and characters that plug into the game so that the entire universe you play in would be drastically different than the "vanilla" single player game? Would this be a viable strategy or would gamers see this as a money grab?

Followup: if Rock Band 2 gets to sell community content, then a 3D Shooter Engine could also sell community DLC, meaning even MORE money and LESS work for the developers.

So as of lately I have found myself less and less drawn to FPS games, just a few years back about 80% of the games I would play involved shoosting and manly shit like that. Now I have found myself playing a TON of RPG's (Persona 3, Devil Survivor, Chrono Trigger ect.) amd I just really don't enjoy playing FPS games anymore. My question here is have any of you ever gone through a game preference change such as this and why do you think they even happen in the first place?

What's your best experiences with "user generated content"?

This can be anything from a cool Little Big Planet level you played, to the most kick ass Oblivion character, to the best PC game mod you've ever played, etc. What made it so awesome/cool/good?

It can be something you made or what somewhat else made :)

Do you think a new cycle of releasing games is starting to happen?: Mostly downloadable content over the summer, big releases in the fall/winter, and whatever's left in the spring.

Is this good (because it matches high and low selling periods) or bad (because you can have months go by with only a handful of big releases)?

Do you think console exclusivity could potentially lead to a game being pirated more frequently? For example I've got a 360 but no PS2 or PS3, and, not willing to to buy an entire console just to play one game, I decided to emulate Shadow of the Colossus on my PC instead. I know that this isn't a great example because the particular game in question spans console generations and may therefore be subject to reverse-compatibility issues anyway, but the idea remains.

Also, does "alternative payment structures" include A Reckless Disregard for Gravity, or is that just an "alternative release structure"?

Everyone has been talking about moral choice systems, but what about games that simply have a lot of choices into which morality doesn't necessarily have much effect. I'm talking about games that have vast, branching, not necessarily linear plot lines and make a lot of use of emergent gameplay. Deus Ex: Invisible War is the first game that comes to mind. Do these choices which are somewhat divorced from morality have a greater potential to provide an enjoyable experience for the player, or are those kinds of choice systems missing something which morality provides?

Are humans inherently evil, inherently good or as we born as a tabula rasa?

The reason why I ask this is because the fact that the kid cried after firing the gun in Penn & Teller showed (granted with a little soft science) that he felt bad about it. His conscience kick in, mature videogames or not.

Maybe videogames are just not powerful enough to affect a regular mentally healthy person. A loner or a any person with some kind of mental disorder would be affected by videogames but they wouldn't be to blame for the kid's actions. people like Jack Thompson should change their focus and instead of trying to ban the sale of mature videogames to kids they should work to get these kids the counseling adn therapy they need, that's the real solution, not violent videogames.
