Podtoid 106: Special Limited Collector's Edition photo

Since the Earth saw fit to swallow up Anthony's internet connection last night, the rest of the cast soldiered on with the handsome Aaron Linde acting as host. That also meant I had to edit, which is why I'm writing this post instead of Anthony. Sorry to move your cheese. It still turned out to be a good show, where we talked about stuff like:

  • I'm not the only one who loved Wind Waker
  • Same goes for cel shading
  • Modern Warfare: Big F*ckin' thing edition
  • Tomb Raider needs more zombies
  • The return of Uncle Reg
  • 20 bucks in a box for $10

As always, subscribe to the show on iTunes to get it early, or check it out right here. Anthony will be back next week, when we'll probably talk about the Penn & Teller thing that we skipped this week in his absence.

Toon Link is truly how Link should look. I would like to point out, that Link was a kid in the first. But Artwork wise, following the first game, Link has always been like 15. In ALttP, he is a young man.

Even so, Link as a child, is a far more interesting character in every regard.

Could care less about iTunes not working but if the real RSS feed for the podcast is broken (which it seems to be because my "podcasting client" doesn't pick it up) then I'll get angry.

Sorry, I still think Majora's Mask was the best 3D Zelda. Wind Waker was cool and oldschool, but I liked how different Majora was and the chances it took. And it did the whole "Dark Zelda" in a really cool way; way cooler than what Twilight Princess tried to do.

Plus, the whole concept of reliving 3 days and getting to know the back stories of every character in the game is something that even indiefags like Anthony would appreciate.

Still, I appreciate Wind Waker's charm and found myself replaying it more than Ocarnina.

Also, I want the next cel-shaded Zelda to look like this:

"Realistic" Link is what the N64

ah crap, cut off my comment. I feel like a dick. Sorry guys!

What I meant to finish with is "Realistic Link" is what the N64 kids grew up with, but that Link in my image I posted is MY Link, and I haven't seen him since the Oracle games :(

Earthworm Jim was freaking awesome.

Sonic Underground was shit.

The Mario cartoons were there.

And I'd say any graphical style in games is instantly more respectful if not realistic. As long as it isn't a JRPG, which just makes it a very J JRPG.

A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker are my three favourite Zelda games.
Majora's Mask was okay for the most part, but it doesn't come close those three games.

Anyone who watched Sonic Underground for one full episode or more was being masochistic.

I don't think I've ever seen a decent Video Game cartoon.
Are there any other good ones apart from Earthworm Jim?

BOMBJACK REFERENCE FOR THE MOTHERFUCKING WIN! As soon as Jim said the name i started flashing back to my childhood playing on my friend's old C64. I have this really vague memory of it having a catchy eastern sounding tune that I couldn't get out of my head for years after playing it.

I find it hilarious how quickly the "unpopular" opinion becomes the popular one. Everybody on this podcast acts like it's absolutely insane to prefer Ocarina to Wind Waker and that all those people are either biased, or had never played a Zelda before, or just plain wrong.

Pretending like Ocarina of Time wasn't good and didn't have interesting characters and lacked charm and was otherwise bland... Don't play devil's advocate just to make your point or because it's more fun. Ocarina of Time was a fucking amazing game at the time, and still is an amazing game. No, the graphics don't hold up as well, but the gameplay, the pacing, the story, the music... everything about that game holds up so well.

But that's not to say that Wind Waker wasn't amazing. And that's the point you guys seem to be missing. You're acting like Wind Waker can only be good if it's at Ocarina's expense. People hold Ocarina up because it's such an amazing game. Wind Waker was a risky, risky game. A lot of stuff about it is very divisive. The cel shading didn't click with a lot of people. Sailing didn't click with a lot of people. Being a kid again didn't click with a lot of people.

Yeah, Link is almost always a kid. But why can't the series fucking evolve? I liked that Link was more adult in Ocarina. I think it opens up more themes for them to explore, more options for Link, and for the of God, it gives them an excuse to actually motivate Link by making Zelda his lover (which they still haven't done--wasted opportunity) rather than his typical "doing good just to do good" crap. I was looking forward to a new, more adult Link.

And besides, A Link to the Past was the best Zelda.

And seriously... the Prince of Persia limited edition was FREE. Stop complaining. It was just for preorders, and just to give people more incentive to buy it at launch.

I love Wind Waker, but it's waaaaaay too flawed to be "Best Zelda Ever". The "play a four note song every time you want to switch characters" in the Earth and Wind temples was annoying. Needing to change the wind direction 20,000 times while exploring the overworld...

I mean, I LOVE Wind Waker, was a huge defender of it when it came out, and wish they'd go back to that art style, but I readily admit the gameplay was flawed. And how is a game that easy "oldschool"? It's not even close to as challenging as LttP or LA, even if it shares its charm.

I think it's a bit silly to call it the best in the series just because it's (extremely) pretty. I think stylistically and conceptually it was exactly what Zelda should be. Zelda should not be gritty, absolutely. But as far as gameplay the 2D Zeldas and OoT were better, in my opinion.

I think the problem of Wind Waker being "kiddie" had nothing to do with how it looks but everything to do with how it plays. The combat was ridiculously easy and simplified in a way that honestly felt kind of insulting. Well beyond the usual "waiting in line" to attack mechanics of other games, and I'm not even sure it is even difficult enough to call "kid gloves." This is the same problem I had with Super Mario Galaxy, the mechanics got boring because there was no challenge.

That was many, many years ago and maybe I'll feel differently when I play it through again. But that'll have to wait for whenever I get my Dokapon Kingdom machine back from my friend's house.

It does look the best though and I'd love to see a "New Play Control" release on Wii in 480p with actual widescreen support. The Twilight Princess Wii controls are so much more comfortable to use than the GameCube setup, and only marginally ruined by the boneheaded idea that they needed to make Link right-handed and flip all of the game's graphics.
