Podtoid 103 is tonight, if you're into that sort of thing photo

I've got no idea what we'll be talking about, but it'll probably have something to do with videogames and human anatomy.

You know the drill by now: ask us questions, and the most interesting query will be rewarded with a Dtoid swag bag.

Woo, Podtoid.

breaking the 4th wall was an important step in the development of live-action theatre, and there are parallels to this in painting, music, and other mediums. videogames have a long tradition of this, dating back to early text adventures.

looking at something recent like Splinter Cell Conviction's "screen projection" mechanic, what other games have you played that really benefited from establishing a 4th wall breaking element ? psycho mantis in mgs1, and braid's world 1 puzzle are other examples.

Hypothetical story question. Imagine that Chet's pecs caught him looking at another person's pecs. Out of jealousy, they separate from his body and challenge him to a fight. Who would win, Chet or his pecs?

If Chet where to ground pound the earth out of pure anger would he cause a tsunami or earthquake, or even worse, pole reversal?

Now that we've seen the Podcastle in Sims3, what do you think Podtoid would be like? How long before Anthony and Aaron hook up? Would Jim abuse Samit then attempt to cuddle him? Would Topher ever wear pants? And how often would Chet come along and start lifting everything in the house? These questions must be answered?

What is the best way to Not-Emulate NES ?

you know, if you want good controls (not a keyboard), good viduals (HDTV maybe) and are tired of blowing into cartridges...

What do you believe is more important in game development: Renovation or Innovation?

Also:
Do you think the influence of general market trends is delayed or maybe not applicable at all to the games market (for instance because of production cycles)?

If you had a choice, would you play a game with a unique peripheral designed just for the game, or with the standard controller for the system?

The question comes to mind because I've been replaying Frequency and Amplitude recently, and it made me realize how much more I enjoy that type of game manipulating the same controller I would use for everything else on the console, rather than the plastic guitar we've all grown accustomed to.

Do you think peripherals such as the GH guitar, the new tony hawk board, and even the Wii Fit board add something to playing games that wasn't there before, or does it detract from the overall experience? Obviously this is a case-by-case kind of question, but I'd like your thoughts on it in general.

Recently I downloaded both Banjo Kazooie games off of xbox live arcade. Later I rented the latest Banjo Kazooie game, Nuts n' Bolts. I was wondering your guys opinion on this newest installation of a classic franchise and also how you feel about the genre as a whole (level based collecting platformers) and it seeming to be brought back to life after so much neglect over the recent years.

Since it will be a featured panel at PAX, has our community freak, Ashly, been able to cope with the attention (both positive and sometimes insultingly negative) that HAWP has brought down upon her head? Has she finally crawled out of the bottle and dropped the substances?

Do you think that the flood of small-media attention for Scribblenauts and the inevitable pre-orders will make WB realize what they have on their hands, or will this be another Beyond Good and Evil where everyone raves about it but never actually buys it.

Furthermore, how sad is it that much of the marketing, promotion, and ultimate success of the game is based on people walking into Gamestop and plopping down $5 worth of interest and attention to the game?

There should be talk of Final Fantasy VII seeing as how its too modern to be retro but too old to be talked about anymore.

And what's this about Mr. Linde's middle name being Frank?

I was at a friends house finishing up half life 2 when my friend played Don't Fear the Reaper and it fit in surprisingly well with the ending sequence and it got me thinking, if there was one section in a video game where you could change to the music to any song ever, what section,song and why?

What is the most tragic thing to happen to any of your games and or consoles?

Mine was my sister went ape after I didn't go out and buy her dinner so she smashed my 360 against my desk and broke my hard drive, causing me to lose ALL my data.

Also, any tips on motivating someone to rebuild 4 years of game data?

After seeing the "moral choices" fad fail in so many games and hearing it announced for so many more (Army of Two...? Why? Just... why?) what would it take for a moral choice system to actually work in a videogame? What have developers been missing?

For instance, what about removing all rewards for choosing good or evil? In BioShock, I played as good only because I'd heard that you get all that ADAM you're missing back anyway and the ending is so much better. Then the player will be free from all shackles of wondering if they're missing something from a gameplay perspective by choosing one or the other. They can just concetrate on the actual morality of the situation.

But that's just one idea and I'd really love to hear what you guys have to say. Anthony could probably bring a couple good ideas; he seems to usually be interested in things like that.

If so what did you think of it?

Also, what were your opinions of the newest Mega 64 video Same old Sh** - New Game Developers Tool?

Thanks for the tip about the balcony in Psychonauts in the last podtoid
That was quite an interesting and jarring contrast.

Question:

Think about this: We are at the end of a decade, one in which in games gained a "coolness" momentum, that continually grew, and became more and more mainstreamed. Now, at the close of the decade, we have gross overexposure and cynical market exploitation with TV shows like "The Ultimate Gamer", and the upcoming the movie "Gamer". The completely predictable counter-culture "decade pattern" seems to be coming to a close, reaching its fever pitch before collapsing under its own over-exploited excesses.

Will videogames continue to gain cultural momentum, or will they eventually become niche again, becoming another victim of the predictable pattern?
examples: skateboarding--->XTREME sports
indy/emo music scene--->Hipster Cliche
people who like games----> GAM3RZ!

Ok this is a FFXIV related question. I know lots of people like to bomb on FFXI but I do agree with some of the things they say. What could SE do to radically alter how an MMO plays to make it more interactive and skill based rather than auto function based (ie: hit attack and sit back) in their new battle system. Do you see any MMO including SE ever making a more skill oriented type MMORPG that is more skill attributed like a sort of Devil May Cry or Ratchet and Clank style action and skill build up system rather than simple stats?

for example:
MGS twin snakes taught me about the anti nuclear proliferation subject

Given the smattering of controversy the inFamous review garnered I've been pondering something. What do the cast think should be the purpose of a review, or rather should the review even have a purpose?

What I mean is do each of you write a review with a certain intention, either to inform the readers on whether or not to make a purchase/time investment in a game or just to be an entertaining read? Or do you simply write with the expectation that each reader will take from the review what they want? (If they should buy it, or if they were curious on how the morality system worked, even if they didn't own the console in question)

So now the exculsive no longer exists and soon the world of DLC for just one console will die out, therefore I ask what is gonna be the next big thing for consoles to fight over and shell out the big bucks for?

Im thinking its gonna be exclusive DLW (downloadable Willy's)

@mo0man I'm referring to (spoilers) Isaac lifting his hand to his face in sadness when he's viewing the video of his girlfriend committing suicide. That makes Isaac truly seperate himself from the player. Whereas you ARE Gordan Freeman.

Is the fact that the point-of-view is first person that makes the immersion succeed on a whole new level or can it be replicated in a third-person game, as long as the main character doesn't portray his own emotions and leaves you to feel the emotions... Ramble ramble... blah, blah, blah
