Plenty of time to spill blood: Prototype will be 18-20 hours photo

I flew out to Las Vegas Tuesday afternoon to get a better look at the much-anticipated Prototype (the full preview will up later this afternoon, so keep an eye out for that!), and as you may be able to imagine, one of the key questions on my mind was the game's length, especially considering that news of inFamous being rather short has had a lot of gamers feeling like they deserve more. Luckily, what I heard was good news.

Max Belanger, Prototype's producer, told me that gamers playing through the main campaign can expect "eighteen to twenty hours of gameplay" without deviating from the main path. If you do decide to dig into the game's side missions and boost up your evolution points, you could be busy for quite a bit longer. There's also full trophy and achievement support, so if you're a completionist, look forward to some cozy long hours spent with this game. See, no matter what the ladies tell you, it is length that counts.

hmm in another interview the Radical bossman says it's same length as inFAMOUS "If you just follow the main story path, about 12 hours. With all of the side missions and everything associated, about 30-plus hours.?

InFamous rather short? I've been hearing 15-20 hours. Stop hating.

wow...crapass reporting. you link to an article saying its confirmed that infamous is short w/out anything to back it up??? the developers talk about quality vs. length, so this open world game is gonna be what 3.5-4 hrs.

according to GT: 20 hrs. on your first run NOT including switching morality.

yeah, that sounds short...good job.

Well as long as it stays interesting for the whole 18-20 hours. Nothing annoys me more when games just tend to drag on and on when you want to be done with it.

For me, this would make me bored.
I can only play GTA style games for roughly 5-6 hours then leave them for like a year before I come back and be interested again. I find that the repetitiveness that is for sure found in these games does NOT create a fun "lengthy" gameplay experience for me.

Bioshock was also in this category as it took me a span of like 6 months playing an hour a week or two to finally beat it.

@Naim

If your basing your purchase on length you'll have to buy both, since they are the same in that aspect.

inFamous is 20-25 hours long, and that's only for on choice, good or evil, play it a second time, and you'll get another 20-25 hours out of it.

Um...inFamous is a LITTLE short, but nothing unexpected. I mean, they said about 20ish hours to complete EVERYTHING. But think about other similar, open world games (like say Fable or Crackdown). Both have about the same amount of time.
If a game gives over 20 hours to me, it's usually a good buy. It is rare nowadays for my $60 game to give me 60 hours of gameplay (Fallout 3 and Oblivion being the only ones).

Damn, hit enter too soon.

In a recent article by Brad, the dev who worked on the game confimed that the game will last that long on a single playthough.

So I think inFamous will be longer, overall. I don't think you have a choice of good or evil in Prototype.

Who cares though, it's how much fun you have with the game that counts, I clocked over 70 hours on SR2, finished it three times, and still play it. They made messing about too much fun, and that's all that matters in the end. If they make both games fun to play LONG after I have finished the main story, then I'll play them upto a 100 hours.

I'm not too fickle mided to get distracted by the next, new shiny game that comes along. :)

Size matters, must add more side missions! Must impress the female video gamers with massive content!

It's been confirmed by folks that have an early copy of Infamous; completing the game takes around 25 hours including all the side missions, and only covers good or evil. It requires another 25 hours and another 16-17 unique missions to cover the other half.

Now, does Prototype have people playing early copies that can vouch their information, or is this just Radical talking out of their asses? You know... like Colette is here.

Infamous sounds longer but truth be told I BS so much in open world games that length isn't usually an issue.

I pre ordered infamous because the gameplay was getting praised ( and its getting 9s from some reviewers) and that's what I wanna see outta prototyp (Its dev has a history of making games look fun but when you get your hands on it, not so much),if the gameplay is awesome it shall join my library.

However I do find it funny that when infamous ( a title that is exclusive to a certain platform that shall remain nameless) announced its length was 15-30 hours ( with good and evil each requiring different playthroughs) that was short, and now that the multiplat annouced it has roughly the same length those who were yelling too short are M.I.A

@Quiotu - According to you, there are only 16-17 unique side missions. If a person is going to replay the game for the opposite morality to experience everything, you really don't have to add in the extra time to complete the homogeneous side missions again.

The time it takes to complete everything would be a single 25 hour playthrough, then an additional 12 hour play through on the polar moral side plus 16-17 unique missions. That sounds like ~30 hours of unique material.

I have no clue how long Prototype will last including side-missions, but as long as either game allows you to repeat some missions (something I wish GTA allowed), and they're [b]fun to play[/i], then either sounds like a good investment. Personally, the over-the-top abilities of Prototype interest me a bit more, but I'm still intrigued by inFamous.
These are sandbox games, people. They're meant to be intrinsically fun based on your abilities, not inherently fun due to unique missions alone!

Sorry, apparently my account being 2 years old isn't good enough. I'm here to catch news and occasionally respond to them. If you have more time to respond, blog, hit the forums... by all means. Me not being a frequent contributor doesn't make my response less valid.

Maybe you could indulge us your infinite wisdom instead of wasting our fucking time calling out people without avatars.

You make a few good points. I counter by pointing out that the design of Cole's powers change if he's good or bad, and he gets different unique powers on either end. So even the side missions will play out differently because you have different toys to play with. That makes them unique enough for me.

And I'm not even trying to bash Prototype; I'll probably play that as well. I just feel the need to call bullshit if the information presented is proven wrong... which it is.

Sorry for the double post, BTW.

Why the fuck are you guys arguing? Protoype and inFamous look like they're the exact same length with good+bad playthroughs.

It just depends, do you like:

Alien arms+Anime style gliding+DNA assimilation? Get Prototype.

A more clear cut, American styled super-hero game? Get inFamous.

Really? "OMG go Do sOMething else BUSY MAN LOL".... really Destructoid?

Quiotu is speaking entirely sensibly about the subject and clearly wins for having a brain. Why there is anybody here encouraging Snakedude is pretty fucking beyond me.
