PlayStation World Magazine bites the dust photo

I know we talk here and there about the death of the print magazine, but seriously folks, it's not looking so good. This morning, MCV reported that Future Publishing has announced that they will be closing PlayStation World Magazine. One member of the magazine's team has already been reassigned to another project, while others are currently looking into moving to the Bath and London offices.

Games portfolio publishing director James Binns says of the announcement:

It’s always incredibly sad when we close a title as established as PSW, but the decision was taken in response to decreasing demand. By focusing our efforts on Official PlayStation Magazine and a single independent PlayStation title in PSM3, we can strengthen our position in delivering the number one and number two print titles in the sector.

Why they had so many PlayStation-centric magazines in the first place is anyone's guess (OMGfanboys!!11!), but I have a feeling one less is only going to mean that Offical PlayStation Magazine gets better. Did any of you subscribe to PlayStation World Magazine and become upset to hear this news?

It's no wonder, who buys gaming magazines now?

Especially for consoles with no games! ! ! !
(Darn this news for coming out now, not much earlier!)

I used to subscribe to PSM back in the day, until I found the Internets. Why did they have 3 mags anyway?

I used to read PSW religiously back in the day, it was and still is one of the funniest things I've ever read, comedy gold on every page, I wish I'd kept my old copies, the last page was always the best. Skip to the end!

Internet for me... by the time it's in a magazine it's usually old news unfortunately.

That's a bummer. I don't read mags anymore but it's just a bummer to have so many people's jobs getting ducked over.

I know they say gaming is doing great but that doesn't neccesarily mean jobs in gaming are doing great. I wish we had some numbers or something on that. I mean an industry can make cash without making jobs.

Having three mags for something like PlayStation means that I'm not OVERLY concerned about this happening - but it does make me wonder whether we're losing our demand for print.

What makes a games magazine worth reading? Worth buying over reading it for free online? Promotions? Incentives? Exclusives?

Have we lost the need to physically hold our product, which is my main reason for still buying magazines?

Hmmmmm.

You guys realize that there are more things about magazines than news? In-dept stories for instance. I'm never ever gonna read a long article on the internet. A lot of people say "tl;dr" if a blog here on Dtoid is longer than the size of the screen. Try EDGE or GAMES(tm) for instance, they're great. The internet is way different than magazines. It's like comparing books on paper with their audio counterparts.

I love magazines and will buy them for as long as I can.

Shame, I used to get that mag. They didn't have Demos on their DVD,so i'd have to buy the official Playstation mag sometimes, but their writing was more amusing. Still have a few old copies on my shelf.

Print isn't dead, remember that they sometimes get exclusives that websites don't see until the magazine comes out. Of course, it is sad when stuff like this happens. I hope all those involved can find a job elsewhere.

I hope this doesn't become a recurring theme with print, as I really look forward to my magazines every month.
