PlayStation Video Store update: Family Jewels, Water Horse, and Unforgiven photo

It’s almost Saturday night, and you still don’t know what you want to do with yourself. I went to see the Dark Knight last weekend, so my fill of the movie theater has been completed for the year. If you’re like me and you’d rather stay home to watch a new movie, the latest update to the video portion of the PlayStation store may seem enticing. This week is a mash of older movies and reality TV shows.

The highlights of the television portion is the introduction of Everest: Beyond the Limit. I know, it sounds completely dumb, but I was drawn into the series by the simple curiosity of why anyone in their right mind would think about scaling Mt. Everest. It turns out that no one in their right mind is willing to climb that thing, and watching these guys freeze to death, break their wrists, or stare at the sun too long is just too compelling to turn off. If you’re into the tattoo industry, episodes of LA and Miami Ink were uploaded as well. I personally enjoy Miami Ink, but it’s not like I have a bias or anything.

For movies, it’s all about Reign of Fire, King Arthur, and Unforgiven. Reign of Fire is a beautiful movie about a dragon ravaged Earth, starring the most amazing man in film history – Christian Bale. It’s kind of like Waterworld, except dragons instead of water. Also, Christian Bale. King Arthur is an attempt to convey an old story in the proper historical context. Unfortunately, it’s neither the correct context nor even the right fable. At least they tried, right? And Unforgiven is a western directed by Clint Eastwood. How apt.

Hit the break for the full release list this week, and don’t forget to tell me what you’re downloading.

This week we’ve added new video content from the following television series:

  • Everest: Beyond the Limit
  • Family Guy
  • Gene Simmons: Family Jewels
  • How I Met Your Mother
  • It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia
  • LA Ink
  • Land Of The Giants
  • Miami Ink
  • My Name is Earl
  • Mythbusters
  • Prison Break
  • The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack
  • Trinity Blood
  • Weaponology
  • Xam’d: Lost Memories (There’s a brand new episode every Tuesday!)

As well as the following feature films:

  • Fool’s Gold
  • King Arthur
  • Reign of Fire
  • Stay Alive
  • The Eye
  • The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep
  • Unforgiven

I actually liked the King Arthur movie in a cheesy movie way.

XBL and PSN need to take a long, hard look at what Hulu is doing. I'd be far more interested in watching on-demand free ad-supported tv shows through my console than spending a few dollars to download an episode I might watch once or twice.

Waterhorse was pretty decent for a family flick.

Seriously though Brad, "Reign of Fire is a beautiful movie... It’s kind of like “Waterworld,” except dragons instead of water"? Please tell me you are being sarcastic so you don't break my heart :(

And don't forget Stay Alive! It's the one gaming movie in the entire list. Well worth a couple of bucks with some friends, it's so terrible.

Xam'D is too expensive, $2.99 for a 25 minute rental.

That's right. I've killed women and children. I've killed just about everything that walks or crawled at one time or another...
And I'm here to kill you, Little Bill, for what you did to Ned.

If we had this service here in Canada, I'd be all over Mythbusters. Then again, I'd be all over anything coming from the Discovery Channel.

Mxyzptlk:

I agree. I'm not going to pay a couple bucks to watch a TV show when I can watch the same show (ad supported) on a site like Hulu for free. It feels weird paying to watch a show that I could have watched live (for free) a couple days before.

I agree about the pricing. If the show is 30 minutes or less i am not paying anything over 99 cents.

Unforgiven is one of the best westerns ever made. If you haven't seen it, then get to it.
